How's Frank? • Feb 13, 2017 10:11 PM

Anyone know if Frank is healthy?

Trae Young • Feb 13, 2017 03:58 AM

I predict KU will win its 13th and 14th consecutive Big XII titles. And at least one Final Four within the next two appearances.

W. Virginia Game • Feb 12, 2017 07:35 PM

Two things:

1) We don't lose big games in conference. Especially at home. When was the last time we lost to a ranked team at home when the conference title was on the line? Was Okie State ranked when Smart did the backflip?

2) As @jaybate-1.0 mentioned earlier, we played like we played against Tech because we had WV coming. We played like we did against WV earlier because we had Kentucky coming. We played like we did against Iowa State because we had KState coming.

Coach preps the kids for the big games at the expense of performing well in the small games. More often than not it works out well for the small games. Even more often than that (it seems), it works out well for the big games.

We'll be fine. We'll probably beat Baylor too. It's the others we should be concerned about.

You know Self is happy about this one. Yeah, there's stuff he will wish would've gone better, but with your star PG with the flu, the refs calling more phantom calls, Tech playing out of their minds, and the fans going crazy, this is a fantastic win for KU.

Other Big XII teams lose these games. Not the Jayhawks. They win. And they win championships.

Would've been nice to have gotten some of these calls that KState is getting

This late in the season, Is there a fix for bad free throw shooting?

YES

I can go out in my driveway and shoot free throws RIGHT NOW and if i do it consistently I will improve. I could probably improve my FT % by 40% (or more) by shooting for two hours.

Although, it would help if i had a basketball goal in my driveway.

Your practicing in your driveway without a basketball goal would probably still make you a free throw shooter than JJ.

words of wisdom • Feb 10, 2017 05:47 AM

@jayballer54 yeah Frank reminds me a whole lot of Van Vleet. Both excellent at going to the rim, creating contact, and finishing.

Fran's remarks about LL • Feb 10, 2017 05:22 AM

Yep, 5:54 mark of 2nd half. He tried so hard to recover from what was CLEARLY a jab at Landen.

I think someone mentioned above, I can't ever remember seeing LL flop. In fact, I'd say there are times where he SHOULD'VE flopped to sell a foul that was there but never called. He gets bulldozed all the time and the refs never call it.

Of course there was always the cramping issue this year, and I wonder if there's an injury as well. Either way, love the dude, expecting great things the rest of this year and next.

@elpoyo said:

the sad part is, both times we played KSU, we barely beat them. Seriously...we should be stomping them by 20 regardless of home court or not. Don't give me BS like they are legit and are tough at home.

Its a big concern if we can barely beat KSU, how will we fare in the tourney.

Yeah, Baylor agrees. SMH

come on go easy on our boy Svi. That cat has saved our season, um I mean their season so many times.

Nobody is perfect. Keep in mind Svi is still younger than our stud OAD Josh.

KU is what they are. A group of kids that say and believe they can win no matter what.

Good point, I always forget how young he is.

@brooksmd said:

@BShark Surprised LL lasted the whole game. The way Johnson was beating on him he should have a cracked rib or two. I have yet to understand why a defensive player gets called if his arms aren't perfectly vertical, yet the guy with the ball can beat on him and shove him out of the way under the hoop without a call.

Completely agree, I've been preaching this for years. Happens in the pros too. Not only is it inconsistent, but it's just ugly basketball too.

Bragg should be the only one NOT smoking pot after this one. (Kidding, I'm not recommending anyone smoke pot, but you get my drift. No pun intended.)

I HATE this part of the game. Why does the losing team get to foul the other team to their advantage?! Should be just like NFL. The right to accept or decline the foul, take it out of bounds, and run 10 seconds off the clock.

Landen, please keep the ball high

No coasting. • Feb 06, 2017 07:05 PM

I think with regards to Baylor, I'm guessing they have fewer possessions per game due to their zone D. Conversely, KU plays a faster paced game, so they'll have more fouls.

No coasting. • Feb 06, 2017 05:23 PM

Yeah Svi is generally a defensive liability. Which means that he needs to really hit his outside shots. And he has been recently except for the occasional wide open misses.

Not closing out on threes is a sign of fatigue. You think "screw it, they probably won't make it." Then "screw it, probably not again." Eventually you wonder why a JJ doesn't find something deep within, but he's been busting it recently so I'm sure he's spent.

I think that's why Self is bringing Carlton to suckhattan. These dudes are worn.

Really the next 8 games we got are as tough as a run that we have had a lot of years. 3 top 10 road games as it currently sets. We will know how good we are after this stretch. I hoping we can win all of them but 6 will be fine with me but we could go .500 if we don't play well. We always have a spot in every season when we look mediocre and this could be it. So don't worry if a few Ls show up.

Except we usually crap out against mediocre teams when we slump. I think we get 2/3 here and lose one or two stupid ones afterwards.

Hate to say I called it, but...

@kjayhawks I hear ya. If I recall correctly, didn't Motley get all his points posting up against our bigs? I know in the 2nd half he eventually did get touches but we doubled him. Then the one time we didn't double him, he scored.

Josh isn't a post-up big, he's obviously more of a small 4 in a 5-guard lineup. I think Josh is the PERFECT zone-buster because of his passing ability (in addition to his scoring) and knew he'd have a great game tonight.

Motley simply isn't as talented as JJ, so that's part of it. Should Motley have known how to pass out of a double-team? Yeah, probably. But he just didn't. I think that's where the coaching comes from. At the end of the day, Motley's a post player and it's tough to post in a zone, particularly when double-teams are flying at you and you don't know how to pass out of it.

Just playing devil's advocate...

@kjayhawks A bit easier to get a guard the ball in a zone defense versus a big. Still Drew should figure it out, but probably not a fair comparison.

Either way you slice it, this ain't your big brother's Baylor Bears. These guys are tougher. They DID benefit from some horrible-looking bank threes, but we also benefited from some bad calls. Props to them tonight. It's a two-horse race. If we can figure a way to beat them on the road, that should at least seal a share for us.

I noticed afterwards that Self was slightly more cordial to Drew afterwards. Playing Drew's zone probably bridges the gap a bit between the two in Self's mind.

Mason. What a stud. Unbelievable.

Lol of course throw it down low to Lucas. Works every time

Why is this ugly play legal? • Jan 31, 2017 10:32 PM

@drgnslayr absolutely. My kids need veggies, even though they don't realize it. So as much as I HATE doing it, I have to "sell" it to my kids. Otherwise they ain't buying it, even though they should.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he's been high during some of the games this year. Dude's just been out of it all year.

Why is this ugly play legal? • Jan 30, 2017 02:02 PM

I think it was a well-called game. Of course, it helps that it was on the heels of one of the worst-called games I've seen. But really, there were the usual bad calls that went both ways, but overall, I thought they made very reasonable calls and didn't try to take over the game.

Things like that the post bullying always stick out to me though. They're not as bad as phantom calls, but like I say, it's just no-talent, ugly basketball. And it goes both ways, I'm sure LL gets away with it too. I'm not even just talking about lowering the shoulder, I'm talking about when guys back into their defender to get closer to the goal. WHY IS THAT LEGAL?!

Why is this ugly play legal? • Jan 30, 2017 04:54 AM

That's true, seems like the only time anyone ever calls it is when the defender has to advertise it.

And it's just ugly. I'm surprised they don't at least recognize that it's ugly and it can't be good for basketball.

Why is this ugly play legal? • Jan 30, 2017 04:41 AM

[Bam Bump](

(About 58:31 into the video) Bam catches the ball in the post, "bams" into Landen, (then shuffles his feet with no call,) and misses. What in the eff is Landen supposed to do there? Why can the offensive player just bump into him like that? If Landen is the one who creates the contact, you know they'd call a defensive foul on Landen.

This happens in college and the pros, and I don't know why these leagues allow it. It's not athletic, does not require much talent, and it's fugly to watch.

Negative Crootin • Jan 30, 2017 04:34 AM

What are these comments of which you speak?

Nice article • Jan 29, 2017 05:13 PM

Yep, he nailed it. Mix up the OAD freshmAn with upper-classmen and that's a great recipe for success. I would think it also eases the pressure a bit on recruiting, knowing that you can get the "developmental" players to commit a bit earlier to your program as they're not waiting to see who's going pro.

Of course, it helps when your developmental players are the likes of Mason, Graham, etc.

NBA GM's on KU's players for the draft. • Jan 28, 2017 07:28 PM

@drgnslayr said:

The characterization that Frank is "not athletic enough" is utterly ridiculous.

Frank has two physical challenges that may hold him back in basketball.

  1. Vertical height - He's 5'11"
  2. Wingspan - Probably near his height, 5'11"

The game of basketball has changed considerably over the years because of wingspan. This isn't talked about nearly enough. Many of the players today are kind of "freaks of nature" because their wingspans go far beyond their actual height. It used to be "normal" to have your wingspan match your height. So many of the players today gain another 6" or so in their wingspan.

If Frank just had those extra wingspan inches... If he did, you wouldn't hear this bozo claim he isn't athletic enough.

It just shows to me how little he understands about the game, players and anatomy.

Complete rubbish.

Devonte and JJ need to throw him some more lobs so he can show off his athleticism.
