Nelson, thinking yelling at a receiver is enough to cover him.

@kjayhawks What did the cranky baby say about the game?

@jayhawkcsg I actually had fun listening to Walton for a change, but he kept referring to players not on the floor (foul on Mitch he said was on Dotson, who was on bench; talked about Grimes having made a great play when he was sitting).

The Tempe/Phoenix thing shouldn't bother you unless you get upset about those of us from Prairie Village referring to being from KC just because it is easier to refer to a large metro area. Tempe is right next to Phoenix.

Upside: At least that one AP asshat voter from Grand Rapids will move us into the top 25 since we have now played a true road game. Moving up!

Discount Double Transfer Game Thread • Dec 23, 2018 04:16 AM

Poor officiating, but that had nothing to do with stupid turnovers throughout the game, including 4 outlet passes intercepted.

@HighEliteMajor The second paragraph is also completely wrong.

The news from Baton Rouge • Dec 21, 2018 04:08 PM

Yeah, let's panic. Been there 32 days and they are writing articles comparing to his LSU recruiting classes? Any articles in Green Bay complaining about the Packers not making the playoffs 3 weeks after firing their coach?

My hope for KU/South Dakota game plan • Dec 20, 2018 04:38 PM

@justanotherfan I appreciate both your experience and your knowledge, but how are you so sure it is a problem of trying to avoid mistakes? It seems equally likely to me that he is perhaps not trying hard enough to avoid mistakes. He has been as likely to drive with nowhere to go as he has been to be too tentative, and some of his shots--feet not set, not squared to the basket--do not show signs of being cautious. Likewise, a few passes to places where his teammates are not.

@BShark Thanks--I thought it was weird to have neither an explanation of the term, nor a comment about why the rating for that criteria changed so drastically from all the others.

What is the "buy games" category?

Marcus "Glue" Garrett • Dec 18, 2018 04:09 AM

@Big-Clyde52 HS highlights are of a pretty confident shooter, but his stroke was always released pretty low. He certainly had quick moves that got him open a lot. Maybe his problem now is that he is rushing things by comparison.

Unplug the Chargers • Dec 14, 2018 04:50 PM

@dylans They have played and lost the 3 games this season where best overall record in the conference (NE), the league (LAR), and now the division (LAC) was at stake. In each game, the defense was made to look like Swiss cheese in the 4th quarter.

Each of these games was a test for performing under pressure. In each, the offense did some amazing stuff, but the defense (mostly the secondary) folded. But in each game, penalties also killed KC on defense. The discipline the team has is appallingly absent.

I don't hold out much hope for advancing in the playoffs.

Unplug the Chargers • Dec 14, 2018 03:45 PM

@JayHawkFanToo He should have tossed it back and forth with Rivers a few times just to rub it in.

I swear, the view from up above looked like our defensive secondary was running random routes like the little felt players traced all over the field in the electric football game we had in the 60's.

Unplug the Chargers • Dec 14, 2018 03:39 PM

@Kcmatt7 I think there was just a timing problem. Normally our defensive backs run around a bit before whining and complaining about their penalties. Last night, I think they were planning their whining while the play was going on, and so they got distracted and confused, especially on that last play. Perfectly understandable. It could happen to anybody, and does, all the time--in pee-wee football.

Unplug the Chargers • Dec 14, 2018 03:15 PM

@nuleafjhawk Forget the defensive coordinator position. Cornerback is yours for the taking.

Now, I do seem to recall you may no longer be in the full flower of youth (correct me if I'm wrong) . Do not let that deter you. A blind one-legged septugenarian with vertigo on a wheel-less skateboard could have performed better than our guys last night.

I look forward to your debut against the Seahawks.

The Chiefs need to cut the entire secondary.

@justanotherfan I think you listed the tiebreakers for wild card teams. The second tiebreaker for division champion is division games, according to the NFL.com link, followed by common games, and conference record is fourth.

New 2019 Recruiting • Dec 12, 2018 08:57 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 I think the "without restrictions" in the article is just about where he can go, including to schools in conference.

Blue blood status means a combination of long-term success with near universal recognition for coaching contributions to the game and for producing numerous elite players.

Short term success linked to a single coach (Gonzaga, for example) isn't enough. Sporadic breakthroughs (Villanova) aren't enough (they would have a better case if their Howard Porter F4 had not been vacated; same with Michigan and the Fab 5).

I think UCLA's success is so uniquely overwhelming it gets in despite its checkered history.

I think of Indiana as a Blue Blood sort of like faded aristocracy in a Faulkner novel. Respect must be paid, but the power and energy connoted by the term is more in the memory than in the reality.

Other Games Tonight • Dec 12, 2018 01:02 PM

Savannah State also missed 40 out of 52 3 pt attempts. If they had made them instead at an above average rate of, say, 40%, they could have scored 27 more points. And lost by only 40. Fool's gold?

Other Games Tonight • Dec 12, 2018 12:50 PM

@BeddieKU23 Man, giving up 23 out of 34 3 ptrs is really going to hurt Savannah State's defensive efficiency score. The likely fall in their NET rating just might end their April hopes.

Poor Silvio • Dec 12, 2018 01:53 AM

Not buying the "play him anyway" argument. That would be giving the NCAA something on which to base additional sanctions, including postseason bans, suspensions of coaches, and scholsrship limits even if they wouldn't have done so just based on the financial allegation. Silvio--or any other player--is not worth it.

Pooka • Dec 12, 2018 01:38 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 I had that one in mind when I wrote.

Poor Silvio • Dec 11, 2018 11:08 PM

@focojayhawk This has come up so many times.

There was no testimony, allowed or even just offered but rejected by the judge, stating that Zion or his family took money--only a disallowed hearsay statement allegedly made by Kurtis Townsend that the family was after a big payoff, and nothing about Duke at all. In contrast, there was direct testimony that Silvio's guardian was involved in (I believe) 3 cash transactions, 1 involving attending KU, that would implicate Silvio's eligibility.

Maybe more importantly, the NCAA apparently has notified KU of questions. Playing SDS would be direct and intentional disregard, providing cause for severe institutional sanctions instead of just a player ineligibility determination. Nothing in the trial was strong enough to do a comparable notice to Duke. So playing Zion can be done without directly flipping the bird at the NCAA.

@Texas-Hawk-10 And about 12 science classes.

@Crimsonorblue22 Those guys tossing the cheerleaders should do.

Pooka • Dec 11, 2018 09:51 PM

I think the original point was that no one admitted to college should need a college class to learn that beating someone is unacceptable behavior.

I chimed in in support on that admittedly very limited point (by cynically questioning the administrators' motives), but obviously any classes would have a much broader scope and deal with more subtle issues.

These types of classes can be just as helpful to, and are needed as much by, kids raised in the "burbs" as in the "hood." Fraternities have grown infamous, and a few have lost their charters, due to ritualized mistreatment of women, both at parties and by requiring abusive treatment by pledges to get in. Many college students from all backgrounds have adopted drug and alcohol as accepted means to overcome lack of willing consent. Classes can educate students not only about what is unacceptable, but what actions cross the line between seduction and persuasion to criminal coercion.

It isn't just violent behavior in a rage that is sought to be avoided. It is also the great confusion and controversies arising out of ambiguity, distress, anger, guilt, and regret that marks too many student sexual relationships and leads to charges and accusations that now are in the news constantly.

Maybe we cannot teach kids how to be good people, but we can teach them the best ways of acting to avoid life-changing trouble. We can teach them two rules:

  1. No means no.

  2. If there is doubt about whether number 1 applies, resolve the doubt instead of ignoring it.

Ideally, classes like these involve a lot of student to student experience sharing, which would help everyone learn from unfamiliar situations rather than only their own.

@Crimsonorblue22 Have fun! Howz the ol' knee doin'? Don't destroy it by jumping up to cheer!

Data sez: Bill Self is frickin awesome • Dec 11, 2018 07:09 PM

@SlickRockJayhawk I would think the only words that matter, and the only messages that are directed to the players, are those he uses in coaching and counseling sessions. Any kid looking instead for direction from Self's media comments, which are addressed to us unwashed masses, is going so far afield from his coach's instructions that he is likely never playing a minute anywsy.

Data sez: Bill Self is frickin awesome • Dec 11, 2018 05:27 PM

@tundrahok These are only games since 2002. According to the comments, that is when the KenPom era began. Total games, not wins, decided by 5 or less in the last 16 years. 50 needed to be included. Left axis is winning percentage in such games.

Johnathan Givony Top 100 for Draft • Dec 11, 2018 05:24 PM

@BeddieKU23 I have no idea, I must admit. I had just been loading web links onto my new phone and was surprised when I saw that one. I figured it must be old, and when it wasn't, decided it was an interesting outlier to the recent posted projections. If I guessed, I would say he places more stock in athleticism than stats early in the season.
