Little guys always have the biggest mouths.
@justanotherfan Who eliminates you is sometimes a measure of whether a team choked or just got beat by a good team. Since I came to KU in 1985 they've lost twice in the first round, and Bradley went on and made the sweet 16. So (other than the probation year) KU has lost to a team that made the sweet 16 every year except the Bucknell year.
The Jayhawks are really all that matters in this discussion, but we do like to compare ourselves to other conferences. Hot outside, summer vacay, time for some easy research. Start with the most important of course.
Big12 9 FF's, and one championship.
ACC (boo) 15 and 7 Championships. Wow
SEC (boo) 9 and 3
B1G 14 and only 1, and that was the first in this study.
PAC 12 5 and 0 Send that to Mr. "conference of champions" Bill Walton. KU during the same time period has 5 and 1.
Big East 10 and 5
Mid Majors (this includes Butler which was in the Horizon league, Marquette in the CUSA, and the Zags out west) 7 FF and 0 Championships.
Unfortunately had I gone back a half decade, the week Pac12 has 2 championships exceeding the number for our league.
What's also striking to me as a B1G fan is they have lost 7 championship games in a row. Ouch! Interestingly too is the variety of league teams to make it to the final four. And there's been 5 different teams to make the finals from that league.
Of course Duke and UNC dominate the results for their league, but Virginia now has one as well.
Texas Tech's near win gives hope that our league will maybe win one. That would have been a really satisfying win from a league perspective.
For the last 4 years KU has been eliminated by a FF team. In fact 13 of these 20 tournaments we've been eliminated by a FF team!
@FarmerJayhawk What does that mean?
But to have to listen to Dakich talking about Allan in that video clip is just about all I can stomach. My least favorite announcer talking about my least favorite player. At least Dakich had a good take on the little baby.
You're the best approxinfinity!
Even though I was kind of joking and I have a lot of respect for drgnslayr as one of the best posters here, I really tire of Zion and Duke..... I know I can just scroll on, just questioning why anyone is discussing this media made basketball player who was so great his team beat Central Florida in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.
Why are we discussing Zion? I thought this was KU Buckets? :)
@BeddieKU23 His mom told me he wants to be a OAD! Not sure if he has that kind of talent, but he is good.
@Crimsonorblue22 Can I ask why you watch NBA summer games? Seriously, it's fine of course, but I'm just curious.
@BeddieKU23 Yeah, he's not a high flier, even though he has decent size.
Illinois is going hard on Adam Miller, but his mom tells me he's kind of 50-50 between them and us and he will make a visit to Lawrence. He'd be a good add to NEXT YEARS TEAM (I figured it out @KUSTEVE) I don't often have inside info on recruiting, well, I never had, until now.
@Texas-Hawk-10 But good enough and experienced enough to gel into a FF team.
Just as long as he doesn't try any selfies at the edge of Grand Canyon I'm ok with it.
@KUSTEVE Aha, I think of 2019-20 national champs version as next years team!
Don't forget Doke and his +.700 career shooting percentage. He's a very good shooter when he's throwing the ball straight down through the hoop most of the time!
They really go out on limbs. UNC is the only non champions classic team to garner a 1 seed. 2 seeds are Kentucky, Louisville, Nova and the Zags. Defending champ Virginia doesn't earn a top two preseason although I suppose they lost some talent.
@approxinfinity I might call a few people here dumb, but you're definitely not one whom I would!
Iām getting one of those unsafe website messages when I come here today. I proceed of course here but am wondering if anyone else is getting that message?
@kjayhawks Manfred thinks it takes away offense. There's already enough offense, in between huge number of players striking out. Hard to legislate against that, but he needs to figure that out too.
Anyone see Kelly Janson intentionally balk a runner to 3rd with 2 outs in the 9th? He was concerned signs were being seen by Heyword on 2nd base and with his team winning by 2 really wasn't concerned with him being on 3rd so he balked him over there. Good strategy.
Totally unrelated topic. What's your opinion of the shift? I was in Wrigley the other night for Sox-Cubs and Bryant gets on 1st twice because of it. Drives me crazy! Also drives me when batters don't try to beat the shift by going the opposite way. Carpenter on the Cards actually bunted hard past the shift for a double the other day. But that's a rarity.
The commish has talked about banning it which also drives me nuts. You can't tell a defense where they can and can't play. Let them be stupid on their own.
This network doesn't have a clue why most American sports fans dislike them so much. Oh they did show NCAA champ Virginia....playing Duke of course. Being off for the summer I do a bit of channel surfing and goodness, every day, it's Duke v...... Unbelievable. If they didn't broadcast our games on a regular basis I'd have nothing to do with them.
@justanotherfan Thanks!
Could someone do a 'from left to right' for me. Faces and names don't work very well for me!
I spoke with Sherron's coach a few years ago and he saw the weight coming on when he was in college and knew it was going to be his downfall.
Home and Home with Wichita. Just start it. Make it part of the annual schedule. A game every year we look forward to.
@nwhawkfan I agree. If any draft is a crapshoot it's MLB. I coached a kid in Wisconsin (in soccer, not baseball!) who was drafted in the 42nd round by the Yankees and then got traded to the Cubs. He fought and clawed his way to the top for a 3 year MLB career. I looked up that draft and the Yankees drafted Eric Duncan in the 1st round than year who never made it to the majors!
And to further prove my point with the #5 overall pick in the 2003 draft, the Royals drafted future super flop Chris Lubanski!
@KUSTEVE Don't forget they have Cheick!
@Texas-Hawk-10 I missed about 5 or 6 holes in the middle. I didn't realize that Brooks had tied it up. He's an amazing talent. But so is Gary.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Brooks was looking like he was going to take charge early on, but unlike past majors, he lost his momentum.
He finishes in style!
Gary's been close before in the majors. Great to see this unfolding. Someone just chanted the RockChalk!
Big putt coming on 14 right now.
Gary looking good so far. Just rolled in a 43 footer for an amazing par save.

@RockkChalkk Are we upset that Q is gone?
My personal opinion is he wanted to get away from his angry coach. Frannie has a long history dating back to 2006 for complete melt downs. Last year, he chased down the refs, and cussed them out after a 20 point loss.
https://heavy.com/sports/2019/03/fran-mccaffery-iowa-coach-suspension/ ā ā
No doubt his son contracting cancer back in 2013/2014 caused their family a ton of stress and angst. That said, I think I can safely say that Fran McCaffery is the angriest, most emotionally out of control coach in college basketball. I'll bet he's a total pain in the ass to play for. The only time you hear about Iowa basketball is when he has one of his infamous emotional breakdowns. I don't blame Moss a bit not wanting to be around that kind of energy all the time.
Yes, you nailed it! We badger fans like to say he had a "frantrum". He's a fool and there's a reason why Iowa hasn't made the 2nd weekend since the last millenium.
@BShark Been traveling the west. Spotty service and climbing mountains has given me little time to check up on what's going on. The original thread made it look like he might come, thus my 'if he comes' comment.
He's a freaking iowa suckeye? And i'm gonna have to cheer for him if he comes?
@approxinfinity Not able to watch this week as we're out west, which isn't a bad problem to have. The homer Eloy Jimenez landed in a place I've never seen a homer land before at Sox park. That was amazing!
@approxinfinity I had a part in his rise to success! I was at a game in early May when he entered the 5th with a lead and the skies threatening with a forecasted long rain. He went out in the 5th and struck out the side in the rain on 11 pitches. He wasn't wasting any time between his pitches.
On the postgame chat on Southsidesox I mentioned how i hated his pace before that 5th inning. He'd monkey around on the mound taking forever and would end up walking the guy. I wrote Lucas needs to remember how he pitched that 5th inning. Lo and behold a day later he's on the sports shows talking about how he needs to speed up his pace like in that 5th inning. He's given 1 run scoring hit in his last 6 starts, a 3 run bomb by one of the Royals. That's it!
The pace of those games, he's been averaging like 2:30 a start which is lightning quick nowadays in MLB.
By the way your Nats are taking it to the Sox this season. Our problem is other than Lucas no one is pitching well at all. Lopez from the Nats finally threw a good game the other day, but he's been a mystery this season.
@Texas-Hawk-10 You're right! I was thinking we had them in AFH.
Yeah, I guess I see the 5 or 6 home games against mid majors and I always wish that it wasn't like that. Sure I'll be up for those games against the bluebloods like everyone else. I never like seeing us wait until Dec. 21 for a true road game either. I also was curious if we had a home and home with Marquette? We had them in AFH last year.
That schedule is pretty dull except for the epic Villanova game and another beatdown of Duke.
He'll never beat the White Sox.
@Crimsonorblue22 I was watching an LSU game last year when a homer went right at a section where a friend often sits. She said a little girl got hit right in the face by that ball. She recovered nicely but had surgeries to repair everything.
I know you had some pushback on this @KUSTEVE but I tend to agree. I prefer the humility route. Of course there's examples of kids with both sorts of personalities who succeed so it does come down to, 'can you throw it in the hoop and keep them from doing so?'.
@FarmerJayhawk Yes you're right!
All my other friends. I know about the difficulties Dotson and Ochai faced, but they simply didn't remind me of the types of freshman that would be known as transformative types. I'm probably wrong like I am every year when I pencil in KU on the last line on my bracket!
Crimsonorblue22 said:
D dot and Ochai were pretty critical last year w/loss of doke and Silvio. They stepped up.
They stepped up true. I guess in my vague criteria of impactful, they weren't good enough to get us another championship nor were they good enough to get us into the tourney very far. And Ochai's game took quite a downturn towards the end. Hoping he figures out what to do to play like the post red shirt coming off games.
I never believe a freshman can lead KU to anything great. Sure, lets get Wilson and Watson whom I just learned about. How many ballyhooed freshman have we had that didn't meet our lofty expectations. Not sure but the last time I remember freshmen coming in and exceeding expectations was when Collison, Heinrich and Gooden came in and were a revelation to me.
I've got an announcement to make....I just saved money by switching to Geico.
