@BShark but not all players. Comes down to a few players do...and does that hold across sports and genders. Wow, I see Title IX attorneys eyes lighting up.
@Kcmatt7 however, the NBA isn't currently willing to pay these kids right out of HS. They also only pay a few players relatively speaking.
Look at the pay scale of the G league and compare that cost to college - at best they are comparative depending on the school.
@Kcmatt7 that would make it a small group from everything I’ve seen.
@Kcmatt7 nice counter. I enjoy the back and forth and the subtleties that are exposed so we all can deepen our understanding. Appreciate you enjoining the debate.
@Kcmatt7 it unbalances the playing field even more. Most Colleges/Universities lose money on sports programs (however, I'm open to facts and arguments that would show impact of sports on 'pure' University funding efforts that could be indirectly fueled from athletic persona of the school).
I think a thorough analysis of all intended and unintended consequences needs to be completed.
To some extent, athletics is an unnatural situation set up to put some element of a level playing field in place.
@Barney exactly true. Maybe the WVU games were an exception, but that then was something we spent significant practice time on beating.
How much does this paragraph speak to the 3 changing the game:
Only four Division I teams in power conferences finished the season in the top 15 in 3-point makes this season. And three of them reached the Final Four. Kansas, at third overall, was one of them, with Villanova (464) leading the nation and Michigan (361) ranking 11th. Marquette, with 385, was the other team in that
Now think about defensive philosophy that says stopping the 3 is critical!
I think some of it was they guarded the 3 line and worked to make us uncomfortable. We had shots but not free and clear shots in offensive rhythm.
But perhaps there was an element of we would beat them inside philosophy tied to a "they can't hit them all" line of reasoning.

Anyone else wonder why Villanova shot 18 (or 19) 3 pointers before we took our first one??
@Blown interesting hypothesis.
@drgnslayr end of HS career or at end of AAU career?
Except I don't even watch MLB

That's why I don't watch any All Star games except the MLB game. It's still baseball. NBA is the worst. NFL doesn't have players from the two best teams, NHL, I don't care that much about to start with.
@truehawk93 I think I was more impressed with QG passing highlights than Devon's
Moore's game seems more Frank M than Devonte G. Finishes well at the rim with either hand, using his body to create or get into space. His game also seems more drive to shoot than drive to pass. That was early FM too. What he seems to do better maybe than either of them is to hit the runner. Of course, feel like we just watched his every scoring play from the year. Any other types of highlights? No assists?
@mayjay or he red shirts.
Villanova starting to play though
And somwere we the ACC champs?

Also, does this mean Villanova are the real Big 12 champs this year? They beat the top 3 teams in the Big 12 3 straight games from the Sweet 16 through at night.

Article discussing their approach on defense
@KansasComet you may be right on the grudge.
Their philosophy was to not let us shoot 3’s. And we didn’t for the longest time.
The last time we played in E8, they also disrupted our movement on the perimeter, our game wasn’t so much a full embrace of the 3 at that time.
@BShark was Trae Y to OU a family business decision?
@kjayhawks great counterpoint.
How much of our issue there is due our physical inability and how much is due to a choice to switch off - perhaps contributing to a mindset that they don’t have to stay in front? I think that contributes.
If he hits it, yes. But we’ll-coached playing %’s
Great year on an undermanned team
I proposed that is our lack of defensive philosophy to disrupt the 3 point or beyond the ark movement that has contributed to our last 2 losses against Villanova.
That allowed them to be highly confident and fully break us down.
How much of that due to philosophy and how much due to personnel (or lack thereof) can be debated.
In this year’s instance, I think it’s both.
Yeah. The 3 point shot and the growing skill level of players is changing the game.
Adapt or die.
Both offensively and defensively.
@BShark I think Self needs to look at using his depth and experimenting with various ways of playing.
Hope Doke stays and we develop both Hi-Lo and 4 guard offense.
Like to see us show more accountability on defense and have a lock down and flexible defensive strategy used.
@kuballin10 it was why Garrett (still love him) was open.
All this time we thought it was Jay Wright’s offensive philosophy we needed. It is his defensive philosophy.
Though the realization is that is the complete adjustment both offensively AND defensively to the 3pt shot (and improving skill set of players) that needs to be fully realized.
To be even more consistently successful, you need the ability to adapt to the opponent’s personnel and skill set.
Bill’s Hi-Lo is great. But I’m this day and age, that won’t always be successful.
So I think we need more flexibility defensively and the realization that the team personnel needs to allow for flexibility.
Don’t know if college limitations on number of players and practice time ultimately allows for consistent success or it comes down to circumstances year in/year out.
Perhaps Bill needs to adjust on this shortening the bench as the year progresses approach. But he’s the hall of famer and I’m nobody (literally).
At the end of the day, I think he has the recruiting and knowledge to completely dominate. (This year recruiting misses and issues created a particularly rough scenario-and I’d say given that, we over-achieved, which is to give Self credit for recovering from miscues-we are ALL human).
Great season. No bad feelings. Just- how do we get better. What do we need to learn!
@BeddieKU23 no
We were on the short end of a 16 point deficit on a 11 point differential from 3 point.
What did we do defensively to try and offset their strength of 3 point shooting from 5 positions efficiently? We played it straight. They made us pay.
2 year’s ago, the difference was that they disrupted us by blowing up our offense beyond the ark (our weave O). They did the same to us this year - not the weave, but ran us off the 3 (our strength) - and we allowed them to shoot relatively freely especially early.
I will grant that they ate us up late when we finally adjusted, but that is a natural transition. At that point we had to come from way back and they were ready for it.
Back to defensive strategy. How long in the game until we took our first 3 point shot even? I don’t know the time butb they had shot 18 to our 1 at that point ( and made 10).
So we’re disrupted and they aren’t to that point.
When we adjust, they are ready.
I don’t like our switching defense. But let me qualify that. I think we did it this year due to personnel shortage. Self had to do that because he couldn’t hold folks accountable with playing time due to depth ( that’s another discussion on recruiting philosophy and issues), so he was forced into trying to make the most of a thin situation.
That said - we over-achieved- and it was a great year. Made it to a dang Final 4 in a year that we didn’t think possible (especially when Preston was gone).
Is it time for Bill to adjust on defensive philosophy like he has on Offense? Wow- isn’t that ironic but in hindsight, not. It’s coming fully into the realization that the 3 point shot ( and attendant player skill level) has completely changed the game.
For a 3 point shooting team- you must disrupt that.
16 point loss. 11 point differential from 3.
What did we do philosophy wise defensively to change that? Especially knowing they are 3 point shooting team.
Can’t dispute definitively, but we did nothing to disrupt them defensively for most of the game.
The last 2 meetings, they disrupted us on offense. As case in point: how long until we took our first 3 point shot?
kuballin10 said:
@Bwag nothing...nova made 2’s and and ones because they understand basic basketball principles
That’s what beat us the last 2 meetings
Time for a Defensive Philosophy adjustment
18/39 from 3.
What did we do to disrupt their 3 point onslaught?
We came back from 9 down in about this time. 15 this time? I’m not feeling it.
Defensive philosophy needs adjusted to 3 point worldview
Last time they disrupted us out on the perimeter. They are doing that again. We do not do that.
Ironic that we all think Bill needs to adjust on offense. It’s defense where a philosophical change is needed.
If they cared about shooting inside

if they put mitch in they destroy him inside. he weighs 200 wet
They are a better team

Jay Wright is a better coach than Bill Self.
They are shooting lights out. Historical performance
We did. We just don’t have a 5 that shoots 45% from 3
He has
Refs feeling sorry for us now
Crazy shooting by them. We over achieved.
Wouldn’t be sad if we knocked a few of their teeth out.
What change?

I don't understand why Bill didnt make the change at halftime. Really kind of disappointing.
I hate , HATE, our switching defense. Gives guys an out to guard their man to the death.

Yes they are hot.....but most of those 3s have been wide open. No excuse for letting them get that far open.
Wide open or covered they have hit the damn rhings
What the hell?
18-1 3 point attempts. One of Villanova strengths is keeping 3 point attempts down. And then they hit fricken 10 of those 18. Difference in game
DeSousa for the win? Hopefully
Brunson acting and begging is below POY
