Keep in mind the spacing of the games during the regular season. It's basically two games over a week instead of two games one day apart. This may make a difference.

Great point.

If the ncaa tourney format were a 2 of 3 game series, or 3 of 5, Virginia would bounce back and win. But now they will go down in history as the first 1 seed to lose to a 16. Hard to shake that moniker. Virginia will live with it forever.

sooooo Glad it wasn’t us - glad penn didn’t shoot the lights out while we went dead cold.

This is a great example of why college age kids winning 6 games in a row is so damn hard. Luck plays a huge part as with everything else. I love the tourney, but it is NERVE-RACKING, and the older I get, the more nerve-racking it gets for me. Because KU is perennially a top tier team, not making the final weekend is always seen (and feels Like) a big downer way to end what had been a fun, often glorious season (14 conference championships in a row etc, great KU players, the fun, the magic.. the whole wonderful experience of being a fan of arguably the greatest college bball program in history.) wish I could find a way to just enjoy it more rather that be full of nerves... part of it is also the impending knowledge that come what may, November 2018 when our boys start playing again is a LONG way away - although being Nat. Champs would make that wait SO much more fun lol.

One game at a time I suppose, and take it for what it is.. the big ups, and the big downs. Find a way to win and play hard, and hope a few bounces and shots go your way. Completely abandon any thinking like “...wait we should be beating these guys by 30!! ..”

I am going to be super pumped and positive today ;) and on to the final four!

Great time to point out reality and feelings. l actually was pulling for other Big 12 teams for a first time. Well not, West Virginia but they had a big lead when l turned on the tube.

@Gunman that's a nock that doesn't have any concrete proof. The schools he cheated at were lower teir and he needed an edge for recruiting over much higher quality programs. At Kentucky he doesn't have that problem and has a track record of successful pros to prove his system works and is effective year in and year out.

Did Coach Self use those tactics when he first started coaching?

jaybate 1.0 says: What separates LB, Roy and Self from Dick Harp and Ted Owens?

As was stated in another thread, all these coaches inherited quality players.
All these coaches had some successful seasons.

Basketball changed during Harp and Owens times at KU. Money changed basketball as it does to all most everything in life. It became unexceptable to have a down year. You weren't bringing in two froshmen every year to replace two graduating seniors. You had to be prepared for the unexpected; injuries, transfers, suspensions, etc.
Scholarships were four year offers coming from Harp and Owens to high school graduates. Today you are offered a scholarship for as long as you are benefitual to the program, or someone more benefitual becomes available.

@Gunman got a good reason why? I'm sure their fans have enjoyed the final 4s. The last time we played in a final 4 we lost to arguably the best college team of all time... A team recruited and coached by the mystery man we are speaking of.

And l'm sure a lot of their fans have enjoyed the success of program and don't care how it was accomplished.

I hope that never happens.

@Gunman Tom Crean is high on the Jayhawks. Has them as a final four team. Seth Greensberg won’t pick the field against KU (at least in the first 2 games) he learned his lesson.

Just ignore the haters and soak in what you want. The fun is just getting started, don’t let someone else bother you. Enjoy the experience! Have a blast it’s tourney time. This is what KU has been preparing for all season long.

We are 27-7. Done without BP and the last three games minus Doke. The staff and boys have done a great job.
I like Self's comment about pressure and fun. The players need to enjoy the tourney.

It would not surprise me if Fraschilla does not return as game commentator next season. Most KU fans are pretty fed up with him and some have a lot of influence with the AD and KU is the big dog in basketball in the conference.

Hope you are right. All the announcers seem to promote upsets or weaknesses in my Jayhawks and it pizzzes me off.

Ty was a fun guy to talk to when I briefly got the chance and was very important to that FF run in 12. I hate all the negativity I’ve seen from our fan base this year, it has really rubbed me wrong. I’m kinda worried if we don’t stop with it, we could end up like the UK scum.

I agree with too much negativity.

@Bwag if Tait can hear what’s coming out of konuts mouth, why can’t the refs?

He has a big mouth and he pretty much manipulated the refs. He and Huggy DARED the refs to call fouls against him, let alone a technical. This is what Huggy does to bball. He manipulates the system to accommodate not only his style of play, but also his coaching style. The game in Lawrence is when he began his campaign to execute his plan. Konate was out of control and all the refs did was 'warn' his stupid azz. He went at Silvio and Graham. He even went at the refs, and they let him.

Sorry, this is Huggy bully ball at its finest. He almost succeeded too. But KU prevailed in real basketball. Proud of our Hawks.

It's not basketball for sure. As the physicality of the game continues to increase it becomes harder to ref. Huggy abd Coach K intimidate officials way too much and get way with it.

Michigan State's Cassius Winston on BTN talking about the team having some freed up time because the conference tourney was a week earlier. He mentions that "Since the Big Ten tourney, Michigan State Basketball scrimmaged, saw "Hamilton" in Chicago & took in a Chicago Bulls game."

Now if you live under a rock. Hamilton tickets are through the roof expensive. 222 for a showing today on stubhub. College student athletes presumably do not have spare cash sitting around for hot ticket broadway shows and professional sporting events. I suppose there's a legit answer for it, but.....

MSU, coming off of a scandal plagued season if there ever was one flaunts its privilege by somehow attending Hamilton together? And the BTN brags about it on their network? This crap makes me sick.

Aren't you confused; attending 'Hamilton' was some sort of discipline/punishment for improper behaviour?

What about the NCAA doing away with amateurism rules. Allow the schools to pay whichever athletes they want "fair market value." How is that figured? That's up to the university. These kids are risking their physical health both short and long term to earn billions of dollars for people who wear suits. As a profitable basketball program, KU could likely offer top recruits more money than say Iowa State, or they could use some of that money to go after a quarterback or a rower or a tennis player. Scholarships would be part of the offers. For some kids like Mitch, that might be enough. For others, some additional compensation might make the difference between their hometown school and a blue blood. In reality that is still the case, so why not make it legal as to get the shady people out!

Will problems arise? Yes. Fix them then. Will some schools game the system and cheat? Yes. Punish the school not the kid. Is it fair? No. Nothing really is.

Schools with more money, wealthier alums have an edge?

Honestly it’s the coach that is the face of the bball program. That’s part of the reason he’s paid so well, brand recognition generated by success. Roy = UNC, Coach K = Duke Boeheim = ‘Cuse. Etc. Players are more the flavor of the month, @kjayhawks didn’t even mention Mario!

College coaches are paid so much because they don't share funds with players. They are paid in accordance with how much revenue their programs produce.

Even though coaches never score any points, the players they develop are responsible for winning games that does influence the amount of income to universities.

Coaches change but the support for the university is still there; for the players on the court.

Going all the way back to Dick Harp, new coaches at KU have inherited very good talent when they took the reins. The FACE was there before they took the job.

Hope it continues that way. ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!

It is ridiculous that an adult is limited from making a living in any profession solely because of collective bargaining, where the participants conspire selfishly to exclude that individual.

An 18 year old can vote and fight for our country, but can't decide on going straight into his chosen profession. Not only requiring any time attending college is wrong, it is done not with the athlete in mind.

Eliminate the required college time and save the NCAA a lot of work.

Loyola of Chicago is now in. Great story. 1st bid since 1985. Their chaplain is a 98 year old nun who prays before the game and throws in a scouting report into her prayer. I.E "We pray we'll have success boxing out #42 who grabs 5 offensive rebounds every game". After games she emails the coach and players what they did well and what they need to improve upon.

Surely that is against some NCAA rules. Is she payed? Are they over the limits on assistant coaches? Maybe Yahoo will break the story.

My hopes for KU post season • Mar 04, 2018 01:54 PM

My hope is that we have what I call a good/average season. An average season under Bill Self is a Conference title, 30 wins and a sweet 16 birth. I know I'm a minority in this but making the sweet 16 isn't easy and it's not a bad year. People I think forget that this maybe the toughest tournament to win in all of sports. I break it down as follows:

Bad/below average season: Not winning the conference and/or a first weekend exit

Good/ average season: Winning the conference and close to 30 games while making the sweet 16

Really good/above average season: Winning the conference, more than 30 games and making to the elite 8

Great Season: Making the final four and when that happens the conference and total wins are irrelevant, Big banner > Little banner

Historic season: National title!

Obliviously not all season fall exactly into this (2010, had both conference titles and 30+ wins) but I think its a good guide line.

Good post. But if next year we don't win the regular season title or Big 12 tourney championship, and don't win 30 games BUT win the NC it would be a great year.
That's what KU basketball players lace them up for every year just like the 1988, 27-10 Kansas Jayhawks!

As Jayhawks fans we have witnessed what Coach has done this year. This his weakest team. Yet the beat goes on.

I'm curious as to what some of think?

  1. Do you put more stock in a coach that takes a team from the bottom of the league, and takes them to the top of the league?

  2. Or do put more stock in a coach that keeps his team at the top of the league year after year?

I understand in my thinking only blue blood Coaches would only win the Coach of the year. Yet I'm not trying to dismiss that Coach that truly does something special. Just thinking that Coach like Self don't get as much credit has they deserve. Not saying climbing the latter of success isn't hard. Yet staying on stop is all most impossible has everybody is gunning for you.

Example look at Shaka Smart? Dude was the cats meow at VCU. Since signing his big contract and playing with the big boys of coaching. He has been quite average at best.

Anyways what say you?

You say this is coaches weakest team and all 5 starters are going to be in the NBA next season?
