@Woodrow Bracketology had the league with 7 bids. BIG had 10 bids actually which means every team in the league gets a bid I guess.

Big 10 has 14 teams so 10 teams is abut 71% compared to 7 teams from the Big 12 or 70%...pretty much even.

@stoptheflop

It might be better to have Garret guarding Lawrence.

Other Games Tonight • Dec 22, 2018 02:43 PM

Baylor holds on to beat Oregon after taking a 16 point lead and Oregon missing 14 of its first 15 shots and not havinmg Bol Bol available. Baylor is averaging 60 PPG but barely over 60 PPG in its last 5 games. Texas loses to Providence at home and while it has some good wins against UNC and Purdue, it also has some pretty bad losses against Radford and VCU; Shaka's seat is getting hotter.

The news from Baton Rouge • Dec 22, 2018 01:17 AM

Much ado about nothing.

First, comparing recruiting classes at KU with LSU in football is like comparing Missouri State and KU in basketball.

Second, the writer states that the low ranking is based strictly on numbers and not necessarily quality of recruits; in fact, he writes that the KU recruits are ranked ahead of 32 other teams ranked overall ahead of KU. He does not seem aware that KU cannot get 25 recruits and is limited to 15.

All things considered, I believe the class Miles is bringing is very good under the current conditions.

@wissox

KU has been defending the 3 pretty well lately; ASU should be a good test on how much the defense has progressed.

I'm not sure why you think I'm interested in how you grew up? News flash I'm really not. Haven't gave it one thought. You see one can have a haughty spirit no matter what side of the rail road tracks you come from.

Obviously you are because you keep referring to my upbringing without having a clue how or where I grew up.

Sorry stake me to the cross and burn me? I just don't agree with you and some others on blaming these kids. Kids are a product of their up brining, their environment. These kids grew up with nothing, yet we expect them to keep this moral compass you speak of. No my friend it's about getting paid, cashing in while you can.

So, they should get paid and cash in while they can without regard for rules, regulations or the law or the hardship they create for others in the process? That is the textbook definition of lawlessness.

Based on your comments I take it you believe we should allow all the underprivileged people from Central America, and the rest of the world for that matter, that come in illegally, willingly and knowingly violating our laws to stay and get benefits even American don’t get? After all the US is dangling in front of them and why should they not just break the law and help themselves while they can?

Poor Silvio • Dec 20, 2018 11:42 PM

@DoubleDD

Again, you have no clue what my upbringing is and yet you feel entitled to use it to justify something that is indefensible.

What you are saying is that because someone is disadvantage he is entitled to break the rules with no consequences and if there is something there for the taking, even when it is wrong, disadvantaged people are entitled to take it anyway....this is flawed logic that does not pass the test of reasonableness and it would not stand in any court of law either. Do you not see that when kids and/or families break the rules they place the program that gave them a full ride in jeopardy? What if their actions cause the program to get penalties that result in loss of scholarships that directly affect other athletes? How about them?

There is no need to ride any moral high horse, moral principles are just that and they are not dependent on class, social or financial status, either you have them or you don’t. Surprised and disappointed you cannot see the difference.

@JayHawkFanToo This could be HUGE for the conference if Tech can pull it off. I can't wait to watch it...

Absolutely. It will tells us how much of an obstacle Tech will be in the Big 12 and also tell us if Duke will run over its ACC opponents or if teams like UNC and Virginia will also contend.

Other Games Tonight • Dec 20, 2018 09:21 PM

@KUSTEVE

Should be a good test for both teams. Other than the pasting of UK in the first game of the season, the two other games Duke played agains ranked team were a 6 point win over Auburn and a loss to Gonzaga. It will be Tech. #1 ranked defense against Duke #2 ranked offense.

My hope for KU/South Dakota game plan • Dec 20, 2018 05:37 PM

@HighEliteMajor

When i started reading your post the first thing that came to mind was the chicken and the egg...and sure enough you had that in the last paragraph. :thumbsup_tone2:

Good points. Another thing that Selden had was that the team was not nearly as deep so he had sure playing time. The team now is deep and Coach Self has the luxury of sitting Grimes down, if needed, and playing someone else instead. I will guess that it might be on the back of his mind and maybe creating the uncertainty. Two solid outings and he will be the player we hope he is.

@JayHawkFanToo and @chriz

The key word here is kids. I'm afraid you trying to compare your upbringing with those of these young superstars. As someone that has grown up in the ghetto, and have seen what goes on. I don't blame any of these kids for getting what they can. You don't put a full course meal in front of a staving person and say you can't have it then walk away. That is the problem. If the Coaches, Agents, Shoe Companies, and yes even the NCAA really cared about these kids they would fix the system. Until then I promise you some young superstar starved for a normal life with a roof over their head and food in the fridge will break the rules/take the money.

I strongly disagree with you because generalizations are dangerous and in this case, invalid. You are assuming that only poor people that grew up on the ghetto break the law and should be given a pass, both assumptions are incorrect...in my opinion. Respect for rules, regulations and the law should not be and it is not dependent on social or economical standing, it just shows the moral compass of individuals. Many of the prospects that broke the law did not grow up in the ghetto or came from extremely disadvantage backgrounds and most that grew up under those circumstances do not break rules, regulation or the law.

Look at some KU players. Devonte's mother had him when she was 14 and yet they managed to do things right under extreme circumstances. Preston, on the other hand, did not grow up in the ghetto or had extreme financial hardship and yet he and his family knowingly and willfully broke all kinds of rules and regulation because of greed.

BTW, you really don't know what my upbringing was.

New 2019 Recruiting • Dec 20, 2018 04:35 AM

@HighEliteMajor

Good points. I will guess UNC and Coach Williams are looking for his replacement and once they find him they will start the transition. At this time I am not sure who they would pick; some of his assistants that were also his player there and at KU are not quite at the elite level UNC would expect and UNC likes coaches within the family.

New 2019 Recruiting • Dec 20, 2018 12:31 AM

@Big-Clyde52

He is only 68, so he will be 76 at the end of his contract, not really that uncommon anymore. Coach K is 71and his contract goes to 2021 so there is a chance he retires then at age 75 although he might stay on just annoy the rest of the country.

My hope for KU/South Dakota game plan • Dec 20, 2018 12:17 AM

@HawkChamp

If you follow the game threads, some posters were ready to give up on Dedrick when he was having not even a bad but an average first half. Grimes will be fine in time; anyone that says he does not have the talent to start at KU has obviously not see him play in HS or under Coach Self for the USA team.

We're Number One! - In Spite of Us • Dec 19, 2018 06:24 PM

@BShark

All the players have been saying all along the Moore is the best 3 point shooter so it was nice to see his shot finally translate from practice to an actual game.

The les miles effect in recruiting • Dec 19, 2018 06:22 PM

Really good start so far with the requisite band-aid JuCo players. I will guess that future classes will depend largely on how well KU does next season; 6 wins sends a message that KU is on the rise and a few players short of being a contender which might get higher ranked prospects to consider the up and coming team. Another 2-3 win season and we are back at the usual spot. With better coaching KU could have won 5 games last season and with the improved coaching staff there is no reason not to expect at least 6 wins.

Poor Silvio • Dec 19, 2018 06:12 PM

@DoubleDD

Yes and no. I would say that in most cases, the prospect himself is generally aware of what is being done on his behalf; perhaps the foreign prospects are less aware but not necessarily fully in the dark.

We know that Preston knew full well what was going on and actively participated in the coverup and he also directly benefited from the money paid by Adidas, which turned out to be one of the reasons why he and family were caught, and his career is now in serious jeopardy if not finished.

All top prospects know each other well and all share experiences, particularly in the AAU circuit, and it is foolish to believe they do not talk about what is going on and how much they are worth to programs; all they have to do is get on the Internet and all the information is readily available for all to see. We have to stop assuming that the kids are always innocent victims and admit that in most cases are willing participants.

My hope for KU/South Dakota game plan • Dec 19, 2018 05:54 PM

@justanotherfan

Ideally, when Dotson takes a rest, Grimes could run the point. He is plenty capable since he did it for the USA team coached by Self and not only he did great he was the entire Tournament's MVP.

At this time it would be hard to take minutes away from Dotson; the man is so good and so fast and he is a constant threat to take it all the way so he keeps defenses honest.

While his offense has been way off recently, obviously Coach Self trusts Grimes defense and he had him on the court at the end of the Villanova game. Last evening, while not a great performance, Grimes was a lot better than he has been recently and one of this days things will click for him and we will see a different player.

I remember when Perry was having problems and could not quite find the hoop even when he was really close until one game, at the Big 12 Conference Tournament, when everything came together and he never looked back and he was an outstanding player from then on. I am hoping that Grimes will be a similar case; the man has so much potential but right now he has a mental block that hopefully lifts in the near future.

Tale of two halves with 3 unlikely heros, Chuckster, Big Dave and the Meotch.

Coyotes For Dinner - Game Thread • Dec 19, 2018 02:05 AM

Very sloppy first half hopefully the second half is better.

My hope for KU/South Dakota game plan • Dec 18, 2018 09:27 PM

@KUSTEVE

Grimes had 3 fouls in 7 minutes halfway through the first half; this more than anything else doomed his playing time. If you recall, he he went in when KU needed a defender and FT shooter at the end of the game.

Super Bowl? • Dec 18, 2018 04:51 PM

ASU was playing well in the first half and leading most of it and was within 3 point with 4 minutes left but disintegrated the rest of the game and could not play decent defense and Vanderbilt scored its last 14 points in the last 3 minutes from the FT line.

New 2019 Recruiting • Dec 18, 2018 01:53 PM

@BeddieKU23

Based om play to date. the Texas Tech. game will likely be between two top 10 teams and will be nationally featured with conference title implications; the West Virginia game not so much.

Perhaps not necessarily next season but more likely moving forward when the staff has had a chance to recruit and the message its sends is that KU will be getting high caliber prospects and 3 star players might not see much playing time in the future.

Other Games Tonight • Dec 17, 2018 05:25 PM

@BeddieKU23

Nevada has not much competition moving forward. Their two toughest games will be against Utah State and Fresno State which are ranked #52 and #65 by Pomeroy. Their best win was over Arizona State at a neutral location and against South Dakota at home and I will guess that their pre-conference schedule was much tougher than the upcoming conference schedule.

Houston has a tough game against Utah State followed by 2 easy games coming up but it gets harder after that with games against Tulsa, Memphis, Temple, Wichita State, SMU and South Florida and while none is great team, they are all capable of having good nights and beating good teams like Houston. Tulsa can be very good and is 2-0 against Big 12 teams.

Marcus "Glue" Garrett • Dec 17, 2018 03:43 PM

@BeddieKU23

Spot on. I had high hopes that his shooting would be better since he allegedly spent all Summer improving it. His shot will not improve this season and KU better not let him close to whoever was working with him. Apparently they chose to keep his really bad shooting form intact and just make it more effective when they really should have started from scratch, fixing his shooting form first and then making it more effective.

Other Games Tonight • Dec 17, 2018 03:32 PM

@BeddieKU23

Oklahoma State is not good at all and Nebraska is arguably the third best team in the Big 10. I agree that St. John’s schedule is as soft as it gets but none of the computer polls rank them very high either; Virginia’s schedule, on the other hand, is equally bad and they are ranked in the top 5 of just about every poll. Nevada has the best chance to be the last unbeaten team left since they have likely played the toughest portion of their schedule.

Dean Wade Outski • Dec 17, 2018 03:04 PM

Wade is a class act and one of the better players from Kansas in recent years and has been a big player for KSU. Hopefully he will have a full recovery.

Mason, Oubre, Selden • Dec 17, 2018 03:00 PM

Here is a link ↗ to the trade which was royalty screwed up along the way. Oubre was the 6th man for the Wizards and had started a number of games and playing well and might be a starter for the Suns competing directly with Jackson who had several good games lately.

Oubre is a bargain at his current rookie contract of $3.2M while Rivers and Ariza are likely overpaid at $12.6M and $15M. Oubre has better stats than Ariza. Selden ended up not being traded after all and he is relatively inexpensive insurance at $1.5M. Mason is the lowest paid Kings player and at $1.3M he is inexpensive insurance when the only other PG on the team other than Fox is Ferrell and Fox has been somewhat injury prone. I can see McLemore being let go before Mason; he just does not play much and he has a $5.5M contract.

Weird to talk about athletes making millions as a bargain when the average fan struggles to make a mid 5 figure salary.

Dean Wade Outski • Dec 16, 2018 11:20 PM

@BShark

Last season he caught enough breaks to last him until his contract is up for renewal. :smile:

"Fools Gold" strikes again • Dec 16, 2018 06:53 PM

I was one point off on KU and 5 on Nova. I will take it.

Knocking Off 'Nova • Dec 16, 2018 06:48 PM

Yesterday we had our early Christmas party for those that will be away for the actual Christmas party so I was able to watch most of the game while welcoming guests but unable to post during the game.

Here are some of my observations...

First, the sky is not falling. KU is doing well and progressing slowly but surely. It is easy to win the big blowouts but its is harder to win the close ones and KU had done it while playing the toughest schedule of any top 25 team and is still unbeaten...while KU keeps on winning...

Only 2 returning players with significant experience and trying to merge 4 new players is not always easy, particularly when your top big is out and the second big is in limbo and unable to play...while KU keeps on winning...

We all though, particularly after the Michigan State game, that Grimes would be the best player in the team and after that game he practically disappeared and the hope is that he will reappear with a bang...while KU keeps on winning...

Dedric has merged nicely and is playing like we thought he could, Dotson has probably exceeded expectations and Marcus is stud on defense. On the other hand, K.J., Moore and Grimes and to an extent Big Dave have yet to fully integrate with the team...while KU keeps on winning...

The defense has also gotten better. in the last 6 games opponents shot: Marquette 41.7% and 45.2%, Tennessee 41.3% and 25.9%, Stanford 44.4% and 35.3%, Wofford 26.2% and 19.2%, New Mexico State 45.5% and 26.9% and Villanova 40.7% and 28.6%. It is obvious that KU is still a work in progress with Coach Self trying to find the optimal lineups for the various opponents with varying degrees of success...while KU keeps on winning...

KU is mostly playing now at what I would consider 60%-70% of potential and, while I don't expect them to ever get to 100% which no team ever does except for short spurts, when they get to the 80%-90% the team will be extremely good...while KU keeps on winning...

Goodbye... "Chop!" • Dec 16, 2018 05:38 PM

@drgnslayr

My point was about the Bilas driven agenda that has handicapped defenses and has overwhelmingly helped offenses. Yes, there will be times when some offensive fouls are called, particularly when the defending player is barely outside the arc under the basket, but there is no doubt the new rules have been created to increase scoring (and viewership) and hurt teams that played aggressive defense like KU did.

Goodbye... "Chop!" • Dec 16, 2018 02:48 PM

@drgnslayr

I will have to disagree with you. The Bilas driven NCAA emphasis has been in helping the offense, not the defense, and penalizing teams like KU that play (or used to play) good, solid defense.

The main issue, in my opinion, is how differently the various crews call games. In some games they will call just about everything and in others they hardly call anything.

"Fools Gold" strikes again • Dec 15, 2018 02:00 PM

I am hoping for a 20+ point pasting along the lines of 87-65 but realistically it is going to be closer to 75-66.
