College Football Playoff • Dec 04, 2017 02:17 AM

@HighEliteMajor

I have seen lots of similar approaches and the answer was that logistically it i is very difficult and the live audience is just not there unless they move games to college campus stadiums which is not always feasible in the Winter and the national audience gets diluted pretty quickly. I though it made sense; I will see if I can find the links for you.

College Football Playoff • Dec 04, 2017 02:09 AM

@kjayhawks

Football games need to be spaced about a week apart this is why football is the only pro sport I can think that is single elimination. Sports like Tennis and Volleyball are the equivalent of best of 5 so not really single elimination. I wish that the NCAA from the Sweet 16 or even elite 8 on would be best of 3.

Chorfs • Dec 04, 2017 01:58 AM

@kjayhawks

That long run Smith had was crazy good. I was hoping he shoved the defender and scored.

College Football Playoff • Dec 04, 2017 01:53 AM

@kjayhawks

2 or 3 less games in the regular season makes it much shorter than Division I. My daughter went to North West Missouri State that has won several titles and not a lot of fans travel to the playoff games, probably in the very low hundreds and games are played in very small stadiums and teams travel by bus. A completely different scenario than Division I.

College Football Playoff • Dec 04, 2017 01:34 AM

@kjayhawks

The NCAA tournament is run by the NCAA and it funds the entire institution, the Bowls are pretty much independent, as I understand it. Logistically it would be very difficult to have more than 8 teams as the season would be extended well into the next year and travelling arrangements for fans would be a nightmare.

Nice start • Dec 04, 2017 01:27 AM

Great start for the Lady Jayhawks; great preparation for the conference. The win over Arkansas was part of the Big 12- SEC Challenge.

Chorfs • Dec 04, 2017 01:20 AM

@AsadZ

Can't blame this loss on the QB. Peters needs to be suspended, he is an embarrassment to the franchise.

@kjayhawks

  • Svi - The Ukrainian rifle (remember Eric Piatowski?), the Sniper, the Sviatinator
  • Vick- Vick-torious, of course
  • Devonte - The baby-faced assassin, although Curry goes by that one. Devonte Graham "I will ring your Bell."
  • Newman - Hello Newman!!!
  • Doke -Sir dunk-a-lot. Don't forget other teams will play "Poke-a-Doke" to take advantage of his poor FT shooting.
  • Lightfoot - I'll Mitch slap you.
  • Garret - The Mongoose.
  • Young - "Cassious, I punch above my height class" Clay
Langford • Dec 03, 2017 11:52 PM

@kjayhawks

Unfortunately Doke plays a position/style that is quickly disappearing in the NBA and his athleticism is limited. Diallo has superior athleticism and plays a position in demand, particularly if you can shoot or develop a shot from the outside.

Looking at possible/probable • Dec 03, 2017 09:21 PM

@jayballer54

It is not unusual for ineligible players to miss trips. If I recall correctly Bragg missed the Kentucky and Baylor trip while his situation was resolved. Maybe Billy’s mom though she could hitch a ride to Miami with the team and Coach Self nixed the idea and gave him a way to save face. Considering the apparent lack of transparency from Billy’s side it would not surprise me.

4 fouls in crunch time • Dec 03, 2017 08:21 PM

Paul and Mario played 3 years so they would have one year; however Kirk and Danny played all 4 years so no eligibility left. Rush, Jackson, Wiggins , Oubre, Robinson and the Morrises among others would have eligibility left.

@mayjay

You are correct. In fact, I understand but not have been able to confirm, there are limits with the type of practice drill non-team members, i.e. practice players, can participate.

College Football Playoff • Dec 03, 2017 07:54 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Those appear to be the best 4 teams now. Two really good games.

Oklahoma returns the big 12 to the CFP • Dec 03, 2017 07:49 PM

@wissox

It was discussed extensive on all the sports shows yesterday and today the consensus appears to be that if you want the 4 best teams Alabama is in and if you are looking at conference titles as the primary criteria, Ohio State is in. OSU has a really bad loss to Iowa later in the season where it tends to count more.

Looking at possible/probable • Dec 03, 2017 07:36 PM

@jayballer54

Here is an explanation ↗ on Preston not making the trip to Miami.

It has been already reported that DeSousa’s score was not high enough so he had to retake the test hoping for a better score.

The walk-on status will likely be determined based on what the projected status for DeSousa and
Preston is at the time.

@wissox

Nemeses.

Langford • Dec 03, 2017 07:08 PM

@kjayhawks

At this point Doke is not a lotto pick considering that he is not even listed in most mock drafts. Other than maybe a Euro player that jumped into the draft late, I cannot think of a player that went from unlisted, at this stage, to lottery pick. He will need a big season to get into the draft and a huge one to be a first round pick. I see Vick and Graham and even Svi and of course Preston with a better chance than Doke...but I could be wrong.

Oklahoma returns the big 12 to the CFP • Dec 03, 2017 05:48 PM

@kjayhawks

Clemson and OU are the consensus top 2 teams, some analysts/sports writers have Clemson as #1 and some have OU. Georgia seems to be the consensus #3 and then we have Alabama and Ohio State battling for the last spot which I believe should go to Alabama but it might go to Ohio State so the Big 10 is represented.

@KUSTEVE

Very nice analysis. The zone is something that can be difficult to face, particularly the one by the master of the system, and you are absolutely correct that Young’s experience and basketball IQ gave him an advantage over Lightfoot and Garret and this is why he played more minutes.

DeSousa • Dec 03, 2017 04:55 PM

What we know so far. DeSousa, because of when he started school in his native country, is eligible to apply for admission to KU. The school has rules for admission but also has a wide latitude to override said rules and admit the candidate on a hardship basis. No problem there.

DeSousa needs to cleared by the NCAA to play sports at KU and it has fairly strict rules and, as I understand, very little leeway. DeSousa took one of the required tests (name is not important) and apparently did not score high enough to qualify, whether it was to validate grades or show college aptitude is again, irrelevant. The bottom line is he apparently did nor score high enough. Problem here.

DeSousa took the test again with the hope the second time around he will score higher and qualify and it will take at least a couple of weeks to know the results. Based on the test results he will either come to KU and be eligible to join the team and play, come to KU and not be eligible to play and just get a head start on academics and, if allowed, practice with the team or just stay at his prep school the rest of the academic year.

I am not sure if KU/NCAA can request an expedited release of the test score, but until such time when the results are available, there is really nothing anyone can do or speculate on DeSousa’s situation.

LOL too much Chinese crap there...although we might get lucky and get Yao MING Part Deux. Amazon Prime has free two day shipping...

Alley Oops, Dg, Malik and Refs • Dec 03, 2017 04:06 PM

Best part of watching the KU game at a sports bar with friends...no Dukie Vitale. 😊

@Hawk8086

Perry was a technically sound and skilled player with a high Basketball IQ, more so than Lightfoot but I would not consider him to be a superior athlete, average at best, but he maximized it by playing smart. The scouting report on Lightfoot were that he was a superior athlete; he really has to be well above average to block shots at his height.

@HighEliteMajor

The UK game was early in the season and Lightfoot was light in experience at the time. Now, he has played a lot more minutes and if KU was to play UK again I am sure Lightfoot would play a lot more minutes than on the first game.

The next few games will show what he can d,o now that he seems to have Coach Self's confidence.

SILVIO DESOUSA • Dec 02, 2017 07:06 AM

Here are some answers ↗ from Jessie Newell on Preston and DeSousa. Hopefully the link works.

@KUSTEVE

Lightfoot is 3rd in the conference in blocked shots with 14 which is 5 more than Doke has and playing only limited minutes.

Entertaining games tonight. • Dec 02, 2017 05:39 AM

@jayballer54

Indiana shot 3-7 or 43% in the first half and 13-19 or 68.4% in the second half from the line which was a big improvement. Over the last almost 5 minutes when they were tied Indiana was outscored 16-6 and the 6 point for Indiana came from going 6-6 from the line. It was really a brand new game with almost 5 minutes to go and Indiana did nor score from the field at all. FTs shooting was not the reason Indiana lost, lack of FGs and not being able to stop Duke was. Just my opinion and we should just agree to disagree.

KU vb • Dec 02, 2017 05:05 AM

Hard to tell what happened to the team, the talent and experience (8 seniors) was there but somehow the team fell appart half way through the season; I will guess that unreported injuries had a lot to do with it. Coach Bechards has slowly built the program into a contender and next season will be in full rebuild mode so expectation should not be high. It will take a lot more than a couple of subpar seasons to fire Coach Bechard. If Coach Beatie can keep his job with the results he has had to date then Coach Bechard should be very safe.

Frank Mason: NBA Starter • Dec 01, 2017 11:12 PM

@Kubie

Great article on Mason; thanks for posting it.

HighEliteMajor said:

@HawkChamp Ok .. I was only commenting on the origins of small ball with Self. Meaning how it came about here.

I just checked. Ochefu was listed at 6'11". Of course, he could really be 6'6".

At KU he would be listed as 7'-1". :smiley:

@big12basketblog

Thanks for the info; I will have to check Barttorvick. Unfortunately I don't as much time as I would like so a cursory view of the data is all I can do; at one time a few years ago I did take the time to go over their methods and they all have limitation...time to put an IBM Watson to work.

When I check the rankings and compare them to the 2 main polls and my own personal evaluation I find ESPN to be by far the farthest and Massey the closest to my own. Since Pomeroy introduced the luck factor, sometimes his rankings make me shake my head. Sagarin has been the pioneer of computer rankings, of course, and he tends to be very solid and it does get better as the season moves on, I guess they all do but some more so than others.

Again, thank you for posting here, your work is really appreciated and enjoyed.

Some early season stats • Dec 01, 2017 10:51 PM

@BeddieKU23

I saw that Weiler-Babb is playing PG now; he did have 6 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists in the last game and the new players are starting to produce. ISU will be much improved by the end of the season.

Entertaining games tonight. • Dec 01, 2017 06:34 PM

@HawkChamp

From the 4:45 mark Indiana went 6-6 from the line, they could just not get field goals or and ones. You just don't win games not scoring from the field in the last five and a half minutes, 5:29 to be precise.

@BeddieKU23

Maryland shot 11-23 for 47.8% from 3 while Syracuse was 3-18 for a putrid 16.7%; Huerter from Maryland was on fire hitting 7-9 from 3, several really long distance shots. As a team Syracuse is shooting 29.1% from the 3 and the better shooters are Battle at 36.7% and Howard at 30.8$ and everybody else is under 25%. If not for a couple of turnover at the very end Maryland could have won the game.

If KU can neutralize Battle and Howard, there is not much left. I can see Garret getting extended minutes in this game. Syracuse has scored 77, 71, 80, 74, 72 and 72 points in 6 games. In comparison, KU has scored, 92, 65, 98, 114, 102 and 96.

The do have 3 opponents in common that each played at home.

Syracuse results:

!0_1512152524516_upload-6c9c61ba-1b66-41cb-8e71-d443ac80cab5 ↗

KU results:

!0_1512152613969_upload-f08ac678-3dcd-40bd-b182-a0ebb51967e0 ↗

No question that it will come down to pace. A slower paced, lower scoring game favors Syracuse and a faster paced, higher scoring game favors KU. How well KU handles the zone will dictate pace. during the Maryland game, Syracuse switched to man to man when Maryland started hitting from outside. All things considered KU should win comfortably.

Mason was a volume shooter in HS, changed his ways and 4 year later he was the concensus
POY.

Joel Freaking Embiid • Dec 01, 2017 05:13 PM

@BeddieKU23

Embiid is the prototype of the new big...strong, agile, fast and can hit from outside.

Entertaining games tonight. • Dec 01, 2017 04:58 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Yes, he missed the fron end of a one and one grabbed the rebound was fouled and missed again; two missed free throws. Had he not missed the first and made the second there was no foul so only two points. If he made the first, missed the second and grabbed the rebound was fouled and made the next two, an unlikely situation, it is still 3 points. Can’t expect to win when you do not score a field goal in the last 5+ minutes of the game.

Entertaining games tonight. • Dec 01, 2017 04:44 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

You are correct. I meant to write 4;45 rather than 5 minutes. Davis missed two at the 4:45 mark and Indiana made 6-6 after that. Duke won by 10 points so two points would not have made a difference. Indiana needed 2s and 3s and did not convert; last field goal for Indiana was with 5:29 left.

Ditto for me, I enjoy the detailed analysis. I see that you use KenPom’s numbers, What do you think of Massey’s numbers/rankings? I find his rankings most closely resemble my own and very subjective opinion.

I know it is early but FWIW, the Pomeroy, Sagarin and Massey computer rankings all have KU as #1. Also, the two whose conference ranking I can see have the Big 12 ranked as the #1 conference. So far, so good.

Entertaining games tonight. • Dec 01, 2017 04:04 PM

@jayballer54

FTs were not the problem. Game was tied with 5 minutes left and Duke went on a 16-6 run, Indiana did not make a single shot but was 6-6 from the line.

Some early season stats • Dec 01, 2017 03:57 PM

@BeddieKU23

Young is the difference between OU being a Conference top or bottom half team. I would like to see Garret on him and see the freshmen Duke it out.

@Kcmatt7 @BeddieKU23

Yes, I was surprised because it is a veteran team that is not expected to choke. I still think it is a solid team and when back to full strength, certainly a potential Elite 8 team.

Entertaining games tonight. • Dec 01, 2017 03:15 PM

@BeddieKU23

I was surprised they beat a solid Wichita State team.

Small ball started not because of the lack of quality post players but with the evolution of the Center position. The original small ball team was not Golden State (who perfected it) but the Miami Heat that played Mario, Wade, Allen, LeBron and Bosch. Years earlier, Bosch would have been called a Center but he was listed as a PF that could go outside and hit the 3 and it is what now is called the stretch PF which is the new trend.

Some teams do not even list a Center anymore and the PFs take on that role playing inside but also stepping outside and shooting the 3. The era of the big plodding, dominant Centers that played close to the basket and never stepped outside such as Shaq, Ewing, Olajuwon, Jabbar and even Duncan is quickly dissapearing. Player that would have been considered Centers such as Pau Gasol and Kevin Love are now considered Stretch PFs that can hit the 3. Even dominant players that are still considered dominant Centers such as Embiid and Mark Gasol are fast and capable of hitting from outside. PFs still play inside but also shoot like SFs from the outside.

For example, take the first game box score from last night between Cleveland and Atlanta, only one player is listed as Center, Plumlee for the Hawks, played and only for 4 minutes. This trend is now moving to college and the bigger players prefer to be called Forwards rather than Centers and are learning to play faster and hit from the outside since it gives them an edge moving to the NBA.

The success of small ball, originally with Miami, and now with several NBA teams including Golden State, Cleveland and several others is spreading and is the future; many of the traditional Centers are now coming from Europe rather than a College. Big men are still here and will always be, it is the role they play that is evolving.

Can someone remind me why Colbey left? • Dec 01, 2017 09:08 AM

@HawkChamp

Coleby is primarily an under the basket type of player where Lightfoot is more of a stretch 4 with a decent outside shot and good at setting picks on the perimeter for the shooters. Under the current scheme Lightfoot would have been ahead of Coleby but Coleby would have gotten playing time.

Can someone remind me why Colbey left? • Dec 01, 2017 08:18 AM

Players wit NBA aspirations need playing time and at KU, with the projected personnel, he saw little playing time available since he would have been playin behind Doke, Preston, Lightfoot and maybe even the ‘Stache. He could not have predicted the Whitman leaving one month later and Preston not being available.

As a graduate transfer he did not have to sit out one year which made his decision easier. Given the current situation I will guess he is having second thoughts, but he is is a good situation for him. Unless he has a monster season, he likely goes undrafted and it is either the G League or overseas.
