What's wrong with Coach Self? • Dec 07, 2017 03:40 PM

If you believe in the law of averages and Bill only wins around 80%of the time; KU is due for another loss out of the next two games. And for another 6- 7 on the year...but I’m all for coming in above average this season!

I’d really like to light up the interweb with a string of profanity that’d make Larry Flynt blush when thinking about another potential loss though.

Sam I am • Dec 07, 2017 03:32 PM

@KUSTEVE My expectations are tempered for Cunliffe. Newman I expected so much more from. He’s out of control on most of his drives, he simply gets too sped up. His shot isn’t as pure as I’d hoped for either, but I knew he wasn’t all he was hyped to be or he’d be in the nba. Cunliffe is a guy I hope can play spot minutes this season before stepping into a bigger role in a year or two. That doesn’t mean he’s unimportant. KU needs more guard depth if they are to run the 4-1 all year.

Billy would’ve been huge last night. Imagine him getting the ball where Vick was...

This team falls apart when Graham isn’t in the floor. Someone needs to be able to spell him.

Why couldn’t someone else slip into the spot on the key Vick was occupying? He is the most athletic and possibly Bill was toughening him up for down the road? I though Vick was not quiet aggressive enough. It might have been nice to insert Malik or even Graham there for a few series so Vick could see what was going on from the sidelines. I feel when Vick watches tape he’ll see points that were left on the floor.

What's wrong with Coach Self? • Dec 07, 2017 02:57 PM

I was pretty impressed with Bill during the second half. Svi threw an errant lob pass and I just knew the frustration would boil over and Self would rip him a new one. But he didn’t. Bill just clapped and encouraged him. The teams confidence was shot and chewing them out over an aggressive play wasn’t going to instill confidence back into them. Back to back timeouts in the second half to try and make adjustment that didn’t work.

Days like this will happen when the team can’t hit a shot; two things bothers me it looked like they gave up and the defense was poor. There is no excuse for hanging your head during a competitive game.

Well said @approxinfinity this does look like another team that will flame out in the elite eight after being able to disguise their flaws against inferior opponents. Hopefully they get some post help to change the narrative.

@kjayhawks I had season tickets for a few years as a student. Now it’s a 6 1/2 hour drive to Lawrence so once or twice a season is it.

The Big12 tournament is a blast (esp. if KU wins it), but you can’t beat Allen Fieldhouse.

Games Tonight (Dec 5) • Dec 07, 2017 12:02 AM

@HighEliteMajor Ouch. Glad I wasn’t in public myself. I wasn’t very impressed either time.

Well I’m hoping to see Sosinksi in person during the Omaha ā€œgameā€

Games Tonight (Dec 5) • Dec 07, 2017 12:00 AM

@kjayhawks I’ve seen KU beat the sooners in football. (Terry Allen I think)

I’ve honestly lost track of the amount of games I’ve been to, but I’d say roughly 75 games in Allen Fieldhouse and 3 in the Sprint Center.

I wish it were more.

We all remember TAM giving Self one of his few home losses ... no repeats, please.

I...was...there... :face_palm: Only KU loss I’ve personally attended. Acie Law IV killed it that night.

In reality - -pretty true statement. • Dec 06, 2017 03:00 PM

@HawkChamp It’s the 30% from 2 that’s disconcerting. His advanced stats are not nice. I’m hoping he gets his skills on par with his athleticism.

It’s going to be an uphill battle for Danny to get Wake into the tourney this year.

@kjayhawks Yes he did. Did you read the article? (It’s a bit windy) That man is insane. All three boys were to be OADs regardless of performance.

@approxinfinity Seems sorted out. You can do a search of the general thread (grayed out topic) and see the boiling point if you’re interested.

@JayHawkFanToo Completely forgot about Billy, since he’s not on the playing roster.

@wissox I think you have your answer.

Langford • Dec 05, 2017 11:59 PM

Vick and then Svi have the most NBA potiental on the current team, I believe. I don’t see any future NBA all stars, but I do see collegiate level stars.

@BigBad I'm not going to argue that Dok is uber athletic, he isn't. But I will never agree with you that a hypothetical 7'1", 280#, 19 year old, with Dok's level of athleticism, that could shoot lights out wouldn't be a top 5 pick.

I'm not an nba gm so it doesn't really matter though.

DeSousa • Dec 05, 2017 07:57 PM

@Big-Clyde52 it looks like the Lawsons made him reconsider.

@JayHawkFanToo I was just going by my sisters experience on the rowing team at WSU. Gear, travel expenses/ lodging, and road food was provided. That's it. No housing on campus, on campus meals, books, or classes are paid for.

Video at the end pretty much confirms that the Lawson’s are not able to handle Dok’s load inside. Sosinki was brought on to bang with Dok, awesome! Dok needs challenged by big bodies too. He can score over length unlike Lucas or Ellis, but he labors to do so. I hope the big practice body helps him to develop quickly. Dok’s development is the lynchpin to this season assuming no post additions.

Sosinki’s big load will help teach Dok the importance of being in good position and how to get there.

Chorfs • Dec 05, 2017 04:23 PM

Per ESPN

What could have been? The Texans averaged 34.7 points per game with Deshaun Watson starting, compared to 14.7 points per game with Tom Savage as the starter. When Watson got hurt he was on a streak of four straight games with at least three passing touchdowns.

Why did the Chiefs take Mahomes? He’d better pan out! It doesn’t look like Alex’s rope will be very long even though his play isn’t the root of the Chiefs problems. Poor line play and a terrible defense is KC’s downfall.

Ok all I'm gonna say - -I'm gonna say - -say • Dec 05, 2017 04:07 PM

Jalen Rose thinks it’s great, because he didn’t have a dad. Says it let’s the kids be who they are without all the pressure of having to hype themselves also. Lavar offers a layer of protection he didn’t have.

I have a great dad. If he acted that way I wouldn’t think he was even a good dad. But I guess he’s better than no dad? In my life he would be a major obstacle to getting and keeping a job though.

DeSousa • Dec 05, 2017 03:57 PM

@drgnslayr This is the more fun version of that list. Since I’ve been watching KU play:

First it’s Ostertag taking on a water slide... The slide won taking two of the big 00’s teeth.

Then Pollard shows up with his painted fingernails and mutton chops. What a trouble maker! Lol

TJ Pugh. That guy could crack up a classroom with a sly remark. Very disruptive.

Moody...what more do I have to say? Trouble from day one. A walk-on starting?!? Gangster!

Sasha Kauhn I once heard that guy got a b in C++ but it was just a nasty rumor.

Langford • Dec 05, 2017 03:50 PM

@mayjay I’m amazed with the transformation of Dok’s body. Hudy is amazing!

All mistakes I hope like hell I’m not making for my own kids. Seeing this Jack wagon (my 7 year olds favorite cuss word) in action makes me feel better about pretty much every non-violent person I’ve met.

Sosinki Thread V2 • Dec 05, 2017 03:36 PM

Walk-ons are warriors. Akin to the athletes in the less heralded sports (i.e. rowing) that have all the responsibilities and none of the scholarships.

DeSousa • Dec 05, 2017 03:34 PM

I love that Bill Self is being blamed for tuning out a roster devoid of post talent and yet his team is playing the best basketball in the nation, undefeated, and ranked #2.

The warts will show, but Bill is doing a masterful job once again.

Langford • Dec 05, 2017 03:25 PM

How athletic does he need to be? He’s 7’1ā€ if he could stroke it flat footed most people couldn’t bother his shot. He’s athletic enough to block shots. He need to gain basketball IQ Dok’s problem beyond having absolutely the ugliest shot in basketball is his lack of understanding of how to position himself. How to seal off his man to get easy baskets, how to hedge on defense. Things that will hopefully come with experience. Lando did those things well, but he was 6’9ā€ and unathletic if he was over 7ft. he’d likely be getting paid to play basketball a bit more than he currently is.

Ifs and buts. He’s not going to develop a shot so it’s a moot point.

Sosinki Thread V2 • Dec 05, 2017 03:19 PM

Walk-on are students who pay their own way. They are given access to the equipment and team facilities. They can travel and eat with the team on the road for free. But that’s it. They are not given financial assistance for their play.

Langford • Dec 05, 2017 03:15 PM

@BigBad And Durant can’t bench press the bar. I still say if Dok could stroke it he’d be a top 5 pick. You can’t teach 7’1ā€. But as it stands he’s not very skilled, doesn’t rebound well for his size, and has no shot. He would be as successful as Cliff Alexander in the NBA at this point.

Sosinki Thread V2 • Dec 04, 2017 11:17 PM

@BShark I hope we get one of them by next semester. Billy knows how to score. I assume DeSousa would be an immediate talent upgrade as well.

DeSousa • Dec 04, 2017 06:32 PM

I believe the minimum acceptable ACT score is a 16 which is really bad. You get a 10 just for putting your name on the form...

4 fouls in crunch time • Dec 03, 2017 07:57 PM

@BShark Paul is out of theoretical eligibility. @approxinfinity Kentucky with all the players they run thru would be the most talented over a 4-5 year period, I’d think. But if they stuck around for 4 years they wouldn’t have been able to sign them all.

4 fouls in crunch time • Dec 03, 2017 03:53 PM

As long as we are wishing redshirt Sr. Embiid would be pretty nice about now.

Alley Oops, Dg, Malik and Refs • Dec 03, 2017 03:37 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 And when he said it Devonte’ wasn’t even going nuts. It was as if he had a rooting interest against Devonte’. First he wasn’t living up to expectations, then he needs to be stoic when he gets hot. But Grayson Allen can trip his way to the top and he’s just a competitor? I thought it was a crappy comment at the time. Dick can barely control his verbal diarrhea, but a kid can’t wave his arms after a made three?

@big12basketblog Sign your work and you may get an unwanted job offer...Good stuff! Keep it up!!!

Some early season stats • Dec 01, 2017 04:29 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Certainly not! He would have to blend in and that’s tough for a volume shooter to do. Ask Svi.

The Jr. Morrii KU team (ā€˜11 I think) would feast on this 4-1 team.

Last year it worked defensively because of Josh. This year it’s working because KU hasn’t played a team with two talented bigs yet. The offense of this years 4-1 is beautiful, but a hi-low offense with two dominate bigs is more consistently good. The off shooting nights can and will doom you in a guard oriented offense. Just as having an ineffective post game can kill a 4-1 also (sorry Lando).

KU really needs Desousa or Preston on the team 2nd semester. The ability to play 2 big bodies (Desousa and Dok) would be nice. The ability to play two talented bigs (Preston and Dok) would be nice. The ability to go fast (Preston and Lightfoot) would be nice. The matchup issues Preston and Desousa would present would be nice. Watching the other coach try to game plan for that...would be nice!

Billy • Dec 01, 2017 04:09 PM

Maybe the Lawson’s don’t bang hard enough to challenge Dok in practice?

Langford • Dec 01, 2017 04:07 PM

Dok’s got no stroke. That’s what’s holding him back. He’d be a top 5 pick if he could knock down a mid-range jumper, top 2 if he could hit a three.
