Do we make the cfp next year? I predicted this year and clearly we had the squad but our OC sucks

@Texas-Hawk-10 KJ needs to show why he’s a started

I think this is a baddd matchup because we can’t guard Flagg and we aren’t quick enough on defensive rotations to double him and recover

Duke he long, fairly athletic and well-drilled

I think we lose by 6-8

Diggy struggled against the length, Zeke’s cold streak comes to an end but ultimately our lack of going true 4 guards 1 big hurts us

@approxinfinity I can for sure but if you look at my posts it’s actual analyzation of his coaching tactics with specific players

Should be noted neither ever comment on anything positive I say…like the Juan comment in the other thread about him attacking and being D1

But boy the second I question something that Coach Self HIMSELF is EVEN questioning…..geez you’d think all heck has broken loose

If he needs a team full of guys he has had for 3+ years to do anything in March that is an issue.

This is the best way to analyze it and you didn’t fan any flames but exposed the truth. He doesn’t quickly develop players well because of how he coaches them. This isn’t an era to tear a guy down like Russ rob and spend 2 years building him back up.

His body language is bad when he makes a mistake because he knows that directly correlates to how long he even has a chance to play ymca school in November

I’d be frustrated if I came in as a stud only to have the “dog” coached right out of me and instead of playing free I’m afraid to eff up for fear I get benched

All the while I watch guys bounced bad in the round for 32 multiple times get to make mistake after mistake and keep their minutes

Team chemistry is tough when coaches play favorites for who’s allowed to mess up and continue playing versus who can’t

Bill wanted a guy who could hunt his shot and was athletic. He got him and then does the ole Bill Self get him so in his head that he’s thinking instead of playing…..tale as old as time

Instead of bringing the guy here and working to elevate what he’s already good at he tries to fix the 20% (defense and rebounding) that sucks and in turn brings down the 80% (scoring) positive parts for why we wanted him in the first place

Guys always play better when they are thinking versus just reacting. Guys always play freer when they think they won’t get yanked quick for one mistake.

@MR11 Nah - if let’s plenty of guys play through mistakes and others he quick hooks. Been like this for decades and his quick hooks u can tell affect those guys playing aggressively.

Guys make mistakes all the time and he lets them play through them (those he trusts)

In line with keeping on topic via this thread….what is your opinion on new players coming in thinking versus playing? Does Self’s quick hook help or hinder them?

Is some made up “toughening box” actually benefit them or should Self let them work through general mistakes and play freer?

Kuballin10 - A coach who quick hooks guys makes them hesitant so they think about not making a mistake instead of playing….

@BShark You and I are seeing things eye to eye. This has always been my gripe with Bill. He plays favorites ie giving long leashes to guys he trusts versus guys who could elevate the team

To be our best we need Griffen and Storr playing like studs

Bills psychology is point blank wrong. He wants these guys to play with a free mind and then decides one mistake and ur out…just absolute stupidity

Bill brings this upon himself with his backwards way of thinking. I have no idea who advises him on this stuff but it is brutally bad in terms of elevating the team versus hindering it

@BShark Friendly confines of AFH covers many sins lol. It’s why we are so great in the regular season and haven’t gotten to the mountaintop as much as we’d like

D1.5 was D1 based on the box score and game thread. He got downhill and hunted his shot when other guys couldn’t throw it in the ocean. Attacking Juan is my favorite whether he misses his layups or tries to swing it out for a three - HES GOTTA ATTACK

When he plays downhill I won’t complain. Question is can he do it against the duke’s, big 12’s ect (he can just needs bill to nudge him)

He’s done these things especially against msu second half.

I also saw him defensively turn it up granted it was Oakland but if that’s the Juan we get against Duke…mark it down - we will win

Juan and Shak/Diggy are good 1-2 punch at the pg spot

Juan isn’t my favorite pg clearly and he’s be baddd at times but for this team with 30 mpg instead of 35-38….he can easily be what we need!

Zeke was easy to peg because he can win one on one and get his shot off at anytime (even against tourney teams). He’s better defensively than @Texas-Hawk-10 said and his rebounding has been outstanding

Zeke’s a baller and effects the game even when his shot doesn’t drop

If he did my job he’d kick my arse at it I’m sure cause whatever he does he’s gonna succeed at

Dudes a stud but yeah I rag on his shortcomings but wouldn’t want another coach at KU. Whoever has to replace him I hope becomes “the guy” in college bball as I don’t want to be the next Indiana, Nova (post J wright) or heck what unc is becoming….

I think Bill will play around with defense and then finally make lasting changes in February.

He better start having Hunter play drop coverage on screens though otherwise we need to check his mental health cause it’s very un-Self like to not know how to tell a big to defend a simple ball screen!

Trust me I tried to defend kj cause he’s so athletic which I love (granted he has minimal actual basketball skills) and @Texas-Hawk-10 put me in my place with the actual stats.

I took up arms that kj can board but in reality he’s never ever been good at it

Season hasn’t turned out as I predicted us being big 12 champs and in the cfp….but win out - get a bowl and roll momentum into next season

JD6 back or Marshall at qb and keep stacking those recruits and transfers. We got something folks just might have been 1 year early on the old predictions

Bill can defend his guy all he wants but KJ’s lack of rebounding isn’t because the coaches are telling him to just take his man off the glass

@mayjay Andy and Bill are really similar. Consistently good all the time but until they have those elite players they can’t achieve prominence

@jayballer67 KJ is athletic enough to guard 1-5 if you ask me on possessions we constantly switch. Heck he was our 5 man and we were a 1 seed….

Coach values defense more than offense but I’d say the game is going the other way. Be a better scorer and on defense force guarded shots and rebound.

That’s where kj hurts us is on the offensive end

Other coaches are very complimentary of KJ but he isn’t all big 12 or defensive team or anything. They then proceed to not guard him at all on the offensive end when he’s anywhere outside the paint

Bill talking about how vital KJ is…..comical as everyone would like to say it’s coach speak but it’s not as he truly believes it based on his minutes each game

He is the absolute definition of consistency as we’ve never missed the tourney like uconn, uk, Unc ect but we’ve only won 2 titles in his time here and we honestly should have 4 or 5….hes underachieved with some incredible rosters

Self has a history of playing guys he trusts even if they limit the ceiling of the team. They are in the right spot even though they can’t always make the play.

If he sat down and discussed this right now he talk about “how athletic kj is, how he can switch and guard anyone 1-5 defensively and he just jumps out of the gym - dunking everything. He hustles big time and dives all over the floor for loose balls.”

All this somehow translates to bad rebounding because he’s got alligator arms but even with that he gets up higher than other dudes yet still sucks at it.

@wissox You sure he said KJ to Och? Was it athleticism or what? That seems crazy to me as Och can shoot the 3 and score a ton whereas KJ can literally only dunk it and hit 30% of the time the occasional 5-10 footer

@Jhawk69 Definitely - he needs to be the spark off the bench but his inability to rebound and offensive inefficiencies really hurt us on both ends against top tier teams

Self is great but man he’s stubborn and his lineups with his guys gave up the lead built from letting guys like flory, zeke and especially Rylan play more

If Kj, Hunt and Juan are 30-35 mpg we will have an ugly sweet 16 loss when other players should have played more

The allowing “his guys” to get beat back door or turn it over not no quick hook vs final 4 players getting the quick hook

I can tell you both player and parent will get upset real quick with his childlike favorites

Moore might take diggy’s minutes if he can defend like @BShark says and hit the occasional 3.

Cons - Bill tightened up the lineups the second half and we peed it away. Had it not been for AFH which masks a ton of issues - we’d lost on a neutral court or road game.

Coit’s shot didn’t drop and he struggled to attack the paint

KJ’s man was in the paint as kj set a screen for Juan at the top of the key. Literally everyone knows not to guard him. This kills everything offensively yet Self rolls with it….unfathomable

Kj can’t rebound, can’t shoot outside 10 feet, isn’t guarded by the other team. He’s athletic as heck and can dunk but more negatives than positives

We still don’t defend the 3 well

Griffin got beat on a back door cut then sat the rest of the game and Juan gets beat off the dribble but plays unlimited minutes if not for fouling. Griffin a final 4 starter a year ago….

Bill’s postgame just read he isn’t worried about defending ball screens cause not many teams athletic like unc. Hey Bill u ain’t winning a title with this pu$$ attitude. Better figure it out or round of 32 against elite guards like Arky or unc. U prepare for the best not the other 90%. Idiotic

Zags are decent and similar hyped place to us at Arkansas. Baylor will give us trouble with their athleticism and length.

Agreed and unc is top 20ish team from what I saw last night. Elon gonna have some portal kids moving up after this year.

Harris played less which allowed Bill to get better looks at other guys. That won’t happen Friday but Bill used the game to really look at things.

@approxinfinity I’ve never heard him speak of any other pg like this. He had a npoy who he’d speak well off but nothing like this.

He never spoke of say EJ in this fashion except one faithful night in Ames and 6-5 ej having to play point is lightyears better than Juan.

@Texas-Hawk-10 - Yeah with Juan it isn’t coach speak I mean come one. He says this constantly and has defended him for half a decade. Coach speak is how much Clemence has improved in the off-season or some bs like that

@kjayhawks What I don’t get is a HOF coach is obsessed with his minimal skill set….thats my hang up that he completely overvalues Juan and gaslights people that he is some John Stockton - incredible pass first pg.

I hammer on it because it is blatantly hurting Self’s own chances and KU’s to win another title. It is frustrating to watch favorites continually play out in the minute distribution with a high level program
