well, that wasn't pleasant.
The most frustrating part of watching KU hoops for me:
Dave receives the ball on the low post in good position. All he has to do is go up not even semi quickly over his right shoulder to the rim and score. But no. He puts it on the floor. backpedals 10 feet, heads to the middle of the lane and hoists up a 10 foot left handed clunker. every time nearly. maddening.

MORE KJ!!!!!!!!!! Don't care if he makes a few mistakes. energy.

Crap. Just realized the Chiefs and Jayhawks play at the same time.

@Marco

Yeah Remy has been too unselfish especially when he dribbles. He's rarely drawn contact which he can do easily with how he plays. He wants to make the spectacular pass which I get but its not helping himself or the team. I'm happy with his effort to please his Coach but its time to tighten up and do what he's good at. Especially with Ochai coming back to earth we need to see him step up

Yup, but the question is really will he be allowed to? Sure seems as though he’s got a leash on at the moment.
I sure hope he can ā€œunleashā€ himself and play more to his skill set.

Remy should be like Akinjo leading this team with Och and Braun instead he’s neutered.

Totally agree with this statement. What’s the point of playing Remy — a guy who doesn’t remotely fit Self’s defensive mold — if he’s barely allowed to use his offensive talent!?

Makes no sense. If Pettiford was healthy, I’d advocate playing him for his all around play over neutered Remy.

I sure hope there’s a Self grand plan here that we aren’t privy to.

Holy shit turds. A comedy of errors tonight.
Soooo lucky Oklahoma State is inept on offense.
I need to rinse my eyes out with vinegar after that one!
But, as others have said: a conference road win.

And you’re all welcome as I get 100% credit for Big Dave’s performance.

Onward!

Rice is a we'll believe it when he shows on campus type. Figure the spring will heat up talk regarding him

So I have not read a thing about other schools and what kinda NIL deals players can get. Anybody know what KU guys may be missing out on?

Unless Martin is a full go in practice today, I doubt he plays tomorrow.

I think this is the beginning of seeing more 5 out lineups for KU. Lightfoot is not going to play a ton of minutes and McCormack, as I have said often, just isn't an ideal fit with this team. I feel bad for him because he's a good player and a hard worker. But the team around him is just not the type of team that his game matches well with.

This KU team is just better when they go small, even though that goes against Self's general philosophy.

Some interesting thoughts in there...lemme ask a few follow up questions...

  1. What kind of player would be a good fit for this team, presumably at the 5 spot?

  2. Dave’s a good player? What makes you say that?

If I’m going back in time, Landen would be a very good fit on this team. Always in the right spot, good positional defender, good rebounder, doesn’t need touches.

Or if Senior Doke is available, you take Senior Doke

I'd take Senior Dok on ANY past KU team!

I respect your basketball knowledge @justanotherfan and I'm not trying to challenge your assertions, but to your point Bill needs to adapt his philosophy to today's game. The game has changed and we have to change with it.

I have no quantitative evidence to back it up and @BShark will most likely tell me I'm full of it, which is fine b/c he's in the trenches and I'm not, but my opinion is that the stale Hi/Lo offense Bill insists on running has contributed to our recruiting doldrums in recent years.

As a side note, throw KJ in the pool and let him sink or swim. What good is stashing him in the "toughening box" only to risk a needless transfer because he wants more playing time? Yes, you should earn playing time, and not just be handed the keys to the kingdom, but at some point you've got to let the horses develop in real game situations and see what you have. Bill's a fantastic coach, but his stubbornness over the years is definitely an irritant.

Yea, it was semi painful to watch the Hi/Lo attempts last game. Especially when tossed to Dave. He just doesn't gather and go up well. he gets mixed up with all those little guys around him.

@justanotherfan said in Bryce Thompson & Okie St:

@rockchalkjayhawk

Fair questions.

The best fit for the 5 spot for this team is a hyper rebounding lob catcher that doesn't call for any post touches. The shot profile for this team should be heavily tilted towards Agbaji/Braun/Wilson/Martin and the other perimeter players. This team isn't built to throw the ball into the post and play with a guy with his back to the basket. It's built to slash and shoot. So a 5 that can catch lobs off help and rebounds everything would be a perfect fit. I don't really have a good current college comp, but Clint Capela with the Hawks is the best pro comparison. He does basically 3 things - screen, rebound and dunk. That's the type of big KU needs here. A guy that runs the floor, screens, rebounds and dunks. If he blocks shots, that's a bonus, but screening, rebounding and finishing are the keys.

McCormack has a nice touch out to 15-17 feet. He is an improving shot blocker and an average rebounder. He has some post moves, though I don't think he is a primary post scorer. He's also an underrated passer, getting the ball out on time and on target when necessary. For a collegiate big man, that's pretty good. That's an all conference player if he's at probably 325 different D1 programs. That's a good player.

He just isn't an ideal fit on this team.

nice thoughts, agree with all of em. now if we could only get Dave off his arse and above the rim!

Seems almost all of us are pulling for Dave and Wilson to put things together. Dave has definitely had a few good minutes but certainly not very many. It has to frustrate the other players when he misses point blank shots or loses the handle. In my opinion Wilson at this time does not fit at all with the team. He seems to have little connection to the others who seem to try all they can to pick him up.

Ya, for sure we are rooting for them to turn it around.
We have seen Dave be decent, or just not bad. So, you figure he’s got it in him. I’ve said this before, but if he modeled some of his game after Mitch, with that body and size, he would be very efficient. Simple baskets. Catch the ball, go straight up with the ball and flip it in. Stop ā€œcollecting yourselfā€ at the level of guards and use you’re size!

As for Wilson, he’s just never seemed to fit in to me. Doesn’t pass the team player eyeball test. He seems to have two great skills IMO — rebound and run. After that it all seems forced. We need him to be better.

Adams • Jan 03, 2022 06:00 PM

More KJ!
I’d love it if he was the first sub off the bench. He can guard just about every spot on the floor.
When he’s had the opportunity to score, he has. I don’t care if he can shoot a jumper, not expecting that from him at all right now.
Hustle, guard, rebound, fly through the air, make things happen with your athleticism. He’s an exciting player without being an offensive powerhouse at the moment. Just about every game he’s played he’s made something happen. I look for it every time he’s on the floor.
More KJ!

Holiday Belt-tightening • Dec 30, 2021 05:38 PM

Yup, Tis the season!
Pretty much one more game for Self to give others some PT before conference play, right?
That means Joseph Y has little time to find out how he fits in.
The problem of course is that Self is trying to squeeze him into the PG role most times, and he’s not really a PG, yet. Same with Remy, really, but he gets the PT.
Pettiford would be in the mix, so that’d be 7 1/2.
As for JCL, as I whined about in the game thread, he simply doesn’t need to see the floor. Send him packing.
Give that time to KJ and let him run wild like a gazelle on steroids!!!

Surprise (Nevada) Game Thread • Dec 30, 2021 07:27 AM

That was a mostly impressive win. Sluggish effort for a few somewhere in there, but great second half recovery.

Remy even tried to score more! Need more of that IMO.

Well, this is now an established team. With Pettiford out, that pretty much leaves Mitch and Jalen as the main guys off the bench. I’d be fine if Coleman Lands never played again. 25 year old dude shooting bricks is painful to watch.

And poor Yesufu may not see much time unless we have foul trouble. Had high hopes for him. Still time I suppose.

Pfizer booster kicked my butt.
Got it last Thursday night, woke up 12 hours later with the shakes, chills, fever, aches, pains, etc.
Hit the couch after i dragged myself out of bed. dizzy, dehydrated, nauseated, 102 fever, sweating like crazy.
didn't wanna eat or drink for two days. Totally weak. Fever and sweats on and off for almost three days. weird!!!
It's almost a week later and i'm still not quite back to normal. Slight cough too!
To be sure, i took a test Saturday. negative.
sucks to be me!

Oh, the second dose knocked me out for most of a day. couldn't even get off the couch. But felt better the next day. was hoping for the same, or less with the booster... sigh

Interesting game last night. Highs and lows, but more lows than highs.
I didn’t do my usual pregame study of SFA, so I dunno how good they were supposed to be. Haven’t they pulled more than a few upsets in the last few years?

Anyway, a win’s a win I suppose.

Poor Dave never could get into the flow with his ridiculously stupid foul trouble. So old, yet so young.

Jalen made a few shots, took some bad shots (turnaround J from the foul line?????), and still has only one skill this year: rebound and run.

For as much as I like to poke fun at Harris, he about brought the house down with that dribble drive dunk attempt!

We got high-lowed to death. Go figure.

Christian is an absolute shocker so far.
I would guess that very few if any of us saw this breakout coming.
Seems like it’s a confidence adjustment that’s propelling him.
I said a while back that’d I’d like him to chill on the stare downs after dunks and great plays, but I take it all back.
That seems to be the key to his success.
— Private thought that nobody else should probably read: We needed more cameras on Christian’s hot mom in the crowd! :)

As for Och, he needs to continue to get to the rim or IMO he’ll start to find less space to shoot.

A few Things we’ve learned:
— somewhat shockingly that Och and Braun (the shock) will lead the team in scoring. Honestly surprised at Remy’s role.
— Wilson has lost something, and can’t find whatever it was.
— KJ remains bouncy!

I’m thinking the weird rotations and floor combinations were to blame today for some of the lapses.
I noticed one odd lineup when we lost some ground.
Is Self just trying guys out before he gets stingy with minutes?
On the surface, I’m not minding any of the guys on the floor, but maybe not have wholesale changes at once? I dunno.
(I still love KJ!)

Pastries for Thought • Nov 28, 2021 01:08 AM

Surprised to see Yesufu up there.
He really has only had like one or two shining moments so far. Needs some adjustment time.
Jalen. jeebus. I still think he's an angry pouter. Just my opinion from afar of course. his body language is not usually great. Immature?
And I love all my Jayhawks, but would not be disappointed to see other players get more time than Harris.
