@truehawk93 Not shooting FT's like that. Missed 4 in last 2 minutes. 3 by the hot shot freshman. Another win thrown away because of missed free ones. UT should have 68 points.
@mayjay Me too. Rooting for Texas and ISU tomorrow.
@kjayhawks Yep. Free throws will win or lose a lot of these games. Baylor wins if they hit FT's. Vandy wins if they hit FT's. Instead OU and UK win. Sure hope we do not get bit by this failure. Better buckle up and take a deep breath and hit them.
@kjayhawks I feel the same way. Doke needs to study film on Brodziansky from TCU. He cocks the ball near his right ear, puts the ball up to the rim softly, and has a perfect follow thru. I am sure Doke is athletic enough that if he started shooting this way several hundred times a day, he could get to 60%. Take a deep breath, a dribble or two to relax, and think of the ball as an egg. Release it as softly as possible to the rim smoothly, no jerks. A slight bend of the knees if needed. Follow thru with your fingers pointing at the front rim. Multiple reps and your muscle memory starts to kick in. It is not that hard.
@Gunman NO!!! There is no such thing as a good loss. That is why they keep score. The winners gloat and move on. The losers hang their heads and go home with their tails between their legs. And you are right. This blueprint has been distributed to every coach and team in the nation. The problem is what can we do about it? In every close game in the future, and there will be many, are we going to have to sit our post player on the pine in the last 5 minutes? If there is a remedy, I would sure like to hear it.
@nuleafjhawk Yeah it reminds me of the Michigan game in the Dance some years back. We are up by 3 with 6 or 7 seconds left. Michigan was throwing everything in the basket from everywhere. Yet, when their guard brought the ball across mid court, instead of fouling him, we let him shoot a 27 footer that ties the game. We lose in overtime. Another situation where the coach has got to have discussed with the team before hand. You put them on the line and take your chances. You damn sure do not allow them to shoot for a tie!!!
@wissox No great coaches. Just common sense, logic, and strategy.
@benshawks08 That quote is true in many situations. Not sure it applies to shooting FT's when it is win or lose. I wonder if Self would do the same thing in a sweet 16 or elite 8 game, when it is win or go home. I am reminded of another quote not sure by whom. The definition of stupid is trying the same thing over and over and over again and expecting a different result each time.
@HighEliteMajor I totally agree. Instead of gaining confidence, (which is the excuse Self made), I am hoping it did not have the reverse affect. After he missed the second set of FT's you could see the rest of the team losing confidence also. They just did not play with the same mojo after the poke-a-Doke started, thereby OU finished the game with a flurry, and we were blanked. Game over.
Also, the people that are saying that we had a two game cushion in the conference so it was okay to gamble reminds me of how we play a lot of time. Instead of the mindset of we have them down lets step on their necks and crush them, it is we are far enough ahead so lets ease up a little. We know how that ends.
@benshawks08 Thanks for helping me to try and stay positive. Agree with a lot of your reply, except Doke improving his FT situation in game has very little chance of happening. He is, and always will be a 40% FT shooter at best with his current form and mental state. Only a complete overhaul of his form and mechanics and mindset will make him any better. And that takes time and many hours of practice. I just hope his confidence was not completely crushed by that performance on national tv. You know he was saying and thinking please don't foul me, please don't foul me. To be a good FT shooter you have to have the mindset to say and think "please put me on the line and I will hurt you". That is not going to happen with Doke.
@Barney Not to my knowledge. As far as I know he is not hurt either. He just seems to be playing tentative or scared for some reason. He has great athletic ability but for whatever reason he does not seem to want to force his will on the opponent. Maybe he developed some type of mental block. Early on he looked like a candidate for all Big 12 selection, then when conference started he regressed quickly. If he could shake out of this funk it would be a huge boost to the team. Still time for that to happen.
Could not agree with you more. I did not sleep at all last night. Feel like a truck hit me this morning. I bleed crimson and blue. I am overly passionate about our Jayhawks. I now have to make the decision whether to continue to watch them the rest of the season. It is affecting my health terribly and not in a good way. Confidence in Self dropped several notches last night.
@CRH107 I also wonder what all the high school players out there that may be considering KU think. Are they thinking man if I go to KU and start having trouble with part of my game, are the coaches going to be able to help me, or they going to just let me struggle thru it on my own? Are the KU coaches competent enough to help me fix my problem? The debacle in Norman did not shine a very favorable light on Kansas. Hopefully all involved will be able to recover and we can continue a successful season. Will not take long to have the answer.
@Jayballer54 The way Vick is playing now I do not want him back. The obvious choice would be to take a veteran senior over a freshman, but Vick has lost his mojo, intensity, and want to. He has less than a half season to reverse that trend. If not, give me a new face that wants to come in and prove himself.
@Texas-Hawk-10 There you go. The situation has been exposed for the rest of the season. Every coach in the nation has seen it now.
@DanR Another great scheme!!
@hawkmoon2020 EXACTLY! Please explain that to the people that are trying to smooth this loss over with whipped cream. JEESHH!
@DanR And just how can we exploit it??? Please tell us. I want to win.
@DanR Please share with all of us what you are smoking. If you think teams will not continue to do this from here on, you need to take a few days off. It will not matter whether it is in conference play or in the Dance. And Dok will not get much better shooting FT's with his form. So I guess Coach can just let him work thru his issues and we can just continue to lose games. Now there is a great scheme going forward. NOT!!!
@Bwag Of course Self lost this game. Even worse he may have cost us the streak. Instead of 7-1 and in complete control of the conference, we are now going to have to scramble and claw to win it. I am still in disbelief of the way he blew this game. Complete stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and failing each time. And I do not give a damn what excuse he uses for doing it. Build confidence? Bull Sht! Send a message? Bull Sht!! There is absolutely no excuse to take away a hard fought road win from your team. And that is what he did. I wonder what confidence he instilled in his team with that coaching decision??
@Statmachine HAHAHA!
@JayHawkFanToo YIIIIPPPPPPIIIIEEEE. Some method. If we do not have a coach that can teach him to shoot better, they may as well get a friggin truck driving job. And if we are stupid enough to leave him in the game no matter what, we do not deserve to win. I am hoarse from yelling to take him out. UTTER STUPIDITY!!!
@hawkmoon2020 You will see a replay of this from now on. We are lucky no one has used it before now. STUPID!!!
@BShark That is right. I can not believe he left him the game. Every missed free throw was a turnover. STUPID!!!
@JayHawkFanToo I don't care what our recruits or theirs do at the all star game. We need our recruits to come to KU and perform extremely well. Other than Josh we have not had much luck or production from the so called top dogs lately. Just hope they all stay healthy and injury free and TROUBLE FREE. If we can get Romeo, that would give us five top 40 kids next year. (Silvio). If they all keep their heads on straight and perform to their hype, we should be in great shape with them added to our transfers.
@Crimsonorblue22 Even more cause of there being no excuse. I still feel he needs coaching and not try and do it on his own. I don't care if it is a coach, Devonte, Svi, Newman, or whoever. It is obvious that he is getting no help, which is inexcusable.
@Crimsonorblue22 Agree on Vick. I can not see him getting a sniff in the League the way he has disappeared. And if Dok does not practice ft's, then the coaching staff is failing him and also the team. There is no excuse for him not to devote 30+ minutes after practice to learning a good form, a soft touch, and a follow thru. It is not that hard.
@BeddieKU23 Amen to that. We are playing 4 against 5 on offense when he is in the game. And what high paid coach is teaching Udoka how to shoot free throws? Ugliest form in college bball. We can't have him on the floor late in a close game. SHEEESH!!!
@Jayballer54 I hear you. I wonder how long it took Maryland to get Silvio's buddy, Bruno, cleared. They are from the same area (Angola) and played on the same teams together. I guess it makes a big diff if you are playing on the coast as opposed to playing in the Midwest.
@dylans Also where the hell is NBA bound Vick? LOL! And where the hell is Overseas bound Newman? LOL! I am sure DG, Svi, Dok, MG, and Mitch would greatly appreciate a little help from them. SCHEEESH!!!
@BShark I remember several weeks ago when Coach Self made the statement that our scout team (Billy, the Lawsons, Cunliffe, and Moore) were consistently scoring 25+ points on our starters during a 10 minute running clock in practice. That is the day I started getting worried. 1. Either the scout team is extremely good, or 2. our starters are just average. Since that time, it appears that the answer is number 2. Giving up 95 and 85 points on our home floor puts an exclamation point on that answer. Help needs to arrive soon or this will be Self's worst team.
@Jayballer54 Looks like we could have a just so-so season ourselves. At least measured by KU standards. May be lucky to finish in the top four of the Big 12, unless the BIG help gets here fast. We are just totally outmanned and we will not hit 15 to 17 threes very often. One hope is for the balanced Big 12 to beat up on each other. But we can not lose at home again to have a chance at keeping the streak alive.
@JayHawkFanToo ASU will be undefeated when they play at Arizona on Dec. 30. If they take them down, I would say they are definitely legit. A good shot at winning the Pac12 and a number one seed. If that happens our loss to them will not look so bad. Still stings to lose in the Phog however.
@jayballer54 On second thought, if Dedric only stays one year, maybe Mr. Wiseman could come in and play with Dave and Silvio. Would we rather have Wiseman or Hurt? Either one would be fine with me.
@Crimsonorblue22 Yes he is.
@jayballer54 East Memphis PG Alex Lomax is signed to play at Wichita next year. James looked like a man playing against boys. Rebounded and dunked at will. 6' 11" and shoots a pretty good three. He would look real good playing with Dave and De Silvio. Probably a very long shot for that possibility with the Lawsons in play also.
@Crimsonorblue22 Yeah the Zags destroyed Washington by 27. As if we need another measuring stick.
@Lulufulu My expectations have been severely tempered. Winning the Big 12 will be greatly challenged with this roster plus Cunliffe. I have seen at least a dozen guards in our conference that will drive to the basket at will against us. Plus many of them shoot very well from three, which we can not seem to guard at all. Keeping the conference streak going will be more of a challenge than I can remember for many years. Hoping the guys will start playing with tons of pride and grit. I am sure they do not want to be the team that breaks the streak. Lots of pressure!!!
@HighEliteMajor WSU beat Baylor. Lets see how they do against OSU and OU from the Big 12. That may help settle the argument. Or maybe not. Might have to see how they do in their new conference.
@jaybate-1.0 Very well stated. I would add that if Cunliffe is not a big help, and if Preston does not get cleared, and if De Sousa does not become eligible, IT WILL BE A VERY LONG YEAR!!!
@HawkChamp I don't know all the criteria these guys put into their rankings. Pre season, Washington was predicted to finish 10th in the Pac 12. For what it is worth, Arizona State was ranked 6th, Stanford 5th. Going by that, those two games should be tougher than Washington. Thankfully, one of them is at home. Hopefully this loss was a huge wakeup call for us. Conference is only five games away. We need to be ready for that gauntlet. We need our roster to be replenished before then. Come on Sam, Billy, and Silvio.
@JayHawkFanToo Yeah watched that game also. Made me also wonder about Ayton. Since Zona is a part of the FBI probe, and many of the CB's had him as a lock for KU. Then all of a sudden he chooses Zona in the end. Sounds and looks a little fishy to me. Just imagine Doke and Ayton on this KU team. Wondering????
@nuleafjhawk Coach may not have said exactly that, but he did say this. "If Billy is on the red team along with Dedric, that is as good a front line as we are going to play against."
@BShark Where did the Hutch Juco kid, Juiston, fit in the recruiting scenario? Was it because he did not see much playing time next year? Sure would like to have him right now. Kid can ball!!
@jayballer54 I don't think Coach would be keeping it a secret if Sosinski were being considered. My feeling is we will roll with what we have and hope De Sousa and Preston joins the team shortly. If one or both do not work out, then he would be a huge need. However it works out, any of those three would take some time to mesh with the team. Hoping for the best outcome.
@elpoyo I am very content to be #2 at this stage of the season. There are about 30 some games left for everyone to play, so #1 or #2 does not mean squat right now. In fact, all it does is put a larger target on your back, which we do not need. Every team we play it is their NC game because of the name on our jersey. When the season nears the end of March then I will be concerned about our ranking. But not right now.
@approxinfinity Sure hope Tripper and Puke does lose. But not sure we want to be number one at this stage of the season. Puts a God awful lot of extra pressure on the kids. We have a huge target on our back already just because of the name on the jersey.
@BShark Exactly our feelings. We have quite a number of fans here that bleed Crimson and Blue. Hoping for the best and quickly.
@BShark Southeast Kansas in Chanute.
@HighEliteMajor Amen to that! All of us that have cableone are screwed. The cities around us that have Cox Cable get all the games. We can barely pick up the game on the radio, as our local station does not carry them. Just defies logic why everyone in the State of Kansas can not watch EVERY game. Like all other things it probably comes down to friggin politics and money. SUCKS!!!!
