@wrwlumpy FANTASTIC AS ALWAYS!! Thanks very much.
@JayHawkFanToo Doke missed most of last year which hurt his conditioning and experience. I was thinking it was his left hand that was in a cast for so long. If so, I think he could have still been able to shoot free throws. He should have been required to shoot 500 a day. That should have been enough to get him to 55-60% or better. I do not know what the staff had him doing, but seems to me that would have been something he could have handled even in a cast.
@Texas-Hawk-10 We all know when UA's injury occurred. Yesterdays news. In my post from days ago, I stated the fact that injuries can happen at any time. (Practice or games). Our practice time and schedule was already set for this season. This game was a hurried up add on. That is why I was against it, even though it showed my selfish side. It was another chance for something bad to happen. Now that it is history and everything came out great, we can all be happy and thankful. We have experience against a quality opponent, game film to watch, bragging rights, etc. Hindsight and history is wonderful isn't it?
@DoubleDD Yes sir. That was my biggest fear. I posted here earlier when this game was announced that very fear. I reminded everyone at that time about how thin we are this year. And I told all fans to hope and pray that no one blows an ACL or any other injury. We are 8 deep (9 at semester), and losing anyone would probably blow our season. Injury can happen at any time, but if in this game, this board would have exploded.
@DanR I watched a very short video and there were a super load of empty seats. Cats won 78-62, but Weber was pissed that they got out rebounded 44-37.
@kjayhawks Yes that was my case also. I did not know about it until I saw the score. Sad if it failed so badly.
@DanR WOW!! Sounds like that was not worth the effort. Thanks for the info.
@DoubleDD No I am not saying we should play any game like this every year against anyone. I hope it was a one time deal. My biggest concern was having one of our players get injured. Thankfully that did not happen. I was just wondering how the K-State charity game came out. I do not know where it was even played. All I heard is that K-State won against a lesser opponent. Was just curious how their game compared to ours.
@DoubleDD Does anyone know how much money the KState-Missouri State game raised? Or how much interest there was in that game?
@jayballer54 The Chiefs do not play on the 22nd.
@Crimsonorblue22 Good on you. Me also. I am sure you are like a lot of us that is so tired of the jokes and snide remarks every week. But we must keep the faith.
@Crimsonorblue22 So do I. It just puts a pit in my gut because I want so bad for these guys to have success. BShark I am afraid you are right. Just gut wrenching to go thru this every weekend. SAD.
@jayballer54 I do not know what kind of result everyone expects, when with a few exceptions sprinkled here and there, we are basically using pretty good JuCo players against D1 players every week. Then throw in the incompetence of the coaches and we are fighting a losing battle. Things will not improve until we find people that can bring more skilled players into the battle.
It all comes down to execution on each and every play, both on offense and defense. I would think that some of the blame for that lack of execution lies with the coaching, but a lot of it has to do with the skill set of the players. Until that scenario changes, we will be a one or two win team every year. Breaks my heart, as I want so badly to have a competitive team and put fans back in the stands on Saturdays. Sucks to be the laughing stock of all the entire college football teams.
@jayballer54 I hope you are right. I would think Grimes would wait and see what Newman and/or Vick will do. If they both leave, I don't see why Grimes would not feel comfortable teaming up with Dotson, Garrett, and Moore. For that reason I think he will wait until next year, unless he decides to go elsewhere. Would really like to see Romeo and/or Zion come on board, as we will probably be pretty thin at SF next year. KJ, Sam, and Mitch will need some help. Should be lots of minutes for at least one or both of them.
@KUSTEVE I am with you. I am not against raising money for anyone that has had to go thru what all these people have endured. Here is my selfish side. Has anyone considered that we only have 8 players (9 after first semester) to run thru 30 some odd games this season? While playing this good deed game, what if Udoka were to injure his hand again, or Devonte were to suffer an ankle or knee injury? Or God forbid, any injury to any of our very thin roster. Our season is over!!! Yes, that could happen in any game, or even practice, but this is a game that is being added to our schedule that we had not counted on playing. I would hope that the powers that be could come up with other ways to raise money without putting our players at risk. Yes I am very much against this game, be it Fizzou or anyone. Guess we had better hope and pray for the best.
@HighEliteMajor I guess we could. But if Doke and Billy both leave, that leaves us with Mitch and two freshmen. Very thin again. Mitch and two freshmen plus the Lawsons is where I want to be. Stacked and very deep with lots of fouls to give.
@kjayhawks Yes you are correct. The coaches are for sure responsible for teaching discipline, technique, strategy, etc. And all of this is went over and over in practice all week. But once the players are between the lines and the clock starts, it is up to the players to execute everything they have been taught and prepared for. There is where the problem lies. The players execute, they usually win. They do not execute, they usually lose.
@BShark Say what?
@kjayhawks I guess that Armstrong penalty was the coaches fault also.
@BeddieKU23 Isn't D Mac announcing on Sunday? I think that is what he was referring to.
@mayjay Thanks very much for the link. WE all know there will be a ton of competition for his commitment. Sounds like he could be another Wiggins or J. Jackson type player. Still hoping.
I see where Zion Williamson was with Frank Martin over the weekend. Was this for an unofficial or official? Sure would like to get this stud to commit to Coach Self. He and/or Dotson, Grimes, would be a great roster to go with the Lawson's, De Sousa, Moore, Cunliffe, Garrett, Mitch, Vick, and who ever else may come back next year. Big Mike Mac would be icing on the cake. Hoping against hope.
@jayballer54 I took his comment to mean that he is NOT concerned about the De Sousa signing. I am wondering how serious the Quickley visit is, and how that might affect Dotson or Grimes. Sure would be nice to get two of the three plus Z. Williamson. That would be a super class to put with the Lawson's, Garrett, Mitch, Moore, Cunliffe, and hopefully Vick. Big Dave or anyone else that might be back would be frosting on the cake.
@approxinfinity I don't believe our open schollie has anything to do with Silvio committing to Kansas. We will have lots of open scholarships available next year. Sure glad to have him, and hope it opens the door to several more top recruits to follow. (Dotson or Quickley, Grimes, Z. Williamson, etc.
@jayballer54 Yep jb54, I would take that roster in a heartbeat. Especially when you add Garrett, Mitch, hopefully Vick, and 2 or 3 three stars with good upside potential. That would be a loaded team. We can always hope and dream.
Thoughts and prayers to your wife. Hope there is good news in the future for both of you. Stay positive and rock on.
@DoubleDD Answers to your questions:
NO he did not do everything in his power to win it all at KU.
YES he did not dare to cross the line to upset daddy Dean.
YES he did leave something in the tank at KU that otherwise may have led to a NC banner.
I appreciate what Roy did do at KU to keep us a winning program, but have always felt he did not give 100% to push us into the championship category. Close but no cigar.
@ZIG Thanks for the correction. I meant to put a question mark after Tyler's name, and not mix him in with the CA boys. Also, I think Thomas was a CA kid too.
@JayHawkFanToo Yes my bad. I should have put a question mark after Hansbrough. That would have made it more clear maybe.
@drgnslayr ANOTHER JAYHAWK DONE GOOD!!!!
Best wishes Kevin!
@justanotherfan You are right. Dean stayed mostly East of the Mississippi. There were plenty Mickey D All Americans right in his backyard. He did not have to go far to get many top kids.
Eric Montross, Matt Wenstrom, Adam Boone, Jonathon Holmes, and Sean May, were a few that he came a little farther West for.
But man when OL Roy got to Carolina he went all over the USA for players. How about Q. Thomas, Bobby Frasor, T. Hansbrough. Larry Drew, D. Thompson, A. Stepheson, all from CA. Ty Zeller ( IN).
Just sayin.
I don't know if Ol Roy's recruiting is a myth or not but it seems quite strange that the only players from the East that played at KU during his tenure were Downtown Terry Brown, Milt Newton, Sean Alvarado, Kenny Gregory, and Moody. You may count Ben Davis, but I think he came thru Hutch JuCo. That is not very many players from the East during a 15 year coaching career. So I am pretty sure OL Roy gave us the shaft while pretending to be an all out coach for us, when in reality he was catering to Daddy Dean. SUCKS!!!!!!
@jayballer54 Like I have said before, Ol Roy may have won a championship or two or more if he had recruited the entire nation. He did damn good while recruiting only half the nation. Coach Self has had quite a few very good players from the East coast. Roy had none. I wonder how many years KU was just one really good player short of winning it all under Roy. Guess we will never know. Still makes me very upset to think about it. We were cheated!!
Jackson is heading to the NBA. Best of luck Josh. Thanks for all your hard play for us at KU.
@Crimsonorblue22 Best of luck to Josh in court. Would be amazing if he has the urge to come back. Probably cost us Juiston, but one more year of Josh would make us SAAAALTY also.
I have had three very good friends do this exact same thing. I know how Ben feels. What should I have said? What should I have done? HELPLESS FEELING!!! May God rest his soul.
@drgnslayr Yes Graham had a terrible game. That is going to happen, but then you expect the rest of the team to step up. Frank did all he could but did not have much help. Last year against Nova, it was Frank and Wayne that had horrible games, and Devonte did all he could, but had no help. When one of your stars is struggling, several others have to step up and do the little extra to carry the team.
@HawkChamp Yes that is exactly why he did not recruit East of the Mississippi. Did not want to trample on Smith's territory.
The 03 failure was on the players. Roy put together a very good team, but when the players do not execute, it does not matter.
20% from 3 and 40% from the line doomed us against Cuse and we lost a championship by 3 lousy points. Still sick about it!!!
@drgnslayr Totally agree with you. As I said in an earlier post, I am thankful for what Roy did here, but he short changed all of us by caving into "daddy" Dean on the recruiting trail. I can not and will not ever forgive him for that. He did pretty good here, but could have done much better.
As was pointed out earlier, KU should have had a NC under Roy. The 2003 debacle is still vivid in my memory. When you shoot 20% from 3 and 40% FT, you can hardly blame that on the coach. That 3 point loss is still number one on the heart breaking losses of all time. Well it is a tie with 1957. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. OHH the banners we could have!!!!!
@dylans What would make me feel better would be more banners hanging in AFH. I just feel if he had recruited hard nation wide we could have lured even more outstanding players to KU, and thus won more championships. Maybe, maybe not.
I did not like his exit either, but as time has passed, I have come to understand his reasons. I will never understand or forgive the recruiting issue. Even so, I believe he is a good person, and wish him well. Just hurts that it is not KU doing the winning.
@cragarhawk That is the fact that has always stuck in my craw about Roy at KU. He would never go after a recruit from the East so as not to piss off his old daddy Dean. The one and only reason I have never been a Roy fan. Appreciate what he did here, but in reality, he short changed KU and us fans. He very well could have won several NC's at Ku if he would have gave us 100%. JUST SUCKS!!!!!!
@BeddieKU23 Billy and Oak Hill are out. Lost to Findlay Prep by 14. IMG and Duval playing now. Off to a bad start. Down by 7 in first qtr. Duval has 8 of their 10 points. IMG has 6 TO's that are killing them. Interested in watching Emmit Williams also, Jr. for IMG.
@BeddieKU23 OK thanks. Will be a long spring with lots of anticipation.
@BeddieKU23 When is that deadline?
Our boy Billy had 10 points, 3 rebounds, in 16 minutes. 2-2 from 3 point range. Duval 8 points, 3 assist, 4 TO, in 20 minutes. He and MJ Walker still had KU listed as possible colleges. Hard to judge much, as it was an up and down rag tag game with very little defense, as usual. Still hoping we can land 1 or 2 more good players for next season. ROCK CHALK!!!
@dylans Yes Nova took the game from us last year, but I feel like this EE loss compared closely to that loss. With Frank and Wayne going 1-12 from three and Perry being bottled up inside, Devonte was our only player keeping us close against Nova. This year it was Frank trying to carry us while everyone else was shooting like crap and Landon being bottled up inside. To me they are pretty similar games. Just a few more shots falling and a couple more rebounds, we probably win both of those games. Hopefully the bball Gods will be more merciful to us starting this next season, and especially in regards to injury. I am keeping the faith. ROCK CHALK!!!
@mayjay Thanks. Best wishes to her friend. It is easy to forget that without our health it does not matter what else is happening.
I was just sick after the loss last night, so did something weird to take my mind off of basketball all together. Listened to Ronnie Bennett and Timi Yuro until I fell asleep after midnight. Worked pretty well as I woke up in an okay mood. Things will be better.
@bskeet Best of luck with the radiation. I had 44 treatments in 2013 for the same cancer. Been doing pretty good since then. Having the Hawks go down like they have the last 2 seasons feels much more traumatic to me. But it really isn't. Life itself is much more important. Hang in there. You will do well. ROCK CHALK!!!
@BShark And only 59 points last year in the EE. That is the problem. We go from averaging over 90 down to scoring 60. The Dux D is good, but not that good. We just looked flat all night and it only takes one flat game to send you home.
