It appears that UNC will not even make the tournament this year.

So if I’m an opposing coach, I would want the ball in Dave’s hands 15 feet from the basket every possession. So there is that. Dave can’t put it on the floor and drive. Dave can’t pass. Dave fumbles the ball around when there is any pressure much of the time. Dave shooting from 15 feet would make any sane opposing coach happy.

The 3/2 is dependent on Silvio somehow becoming the player we expected, OR possibly playing a guard, like Brain, as the “high”? The latter simply spit ballin’.

Silvio sucks at this point, simple as that. I also never said anything about McCormack needing to put the ball on the ground. 15' is about the extent of his range so if opposing coaches are giving him that, I'm telling him to take that shot every time he's left alone there because he's going to hit that shot about 60-65% of the time from there. If opposing defenses never adjust to that, then McCormack ends up with some 20 point games on a good night. If they do adjust, then the lanes open up for the guards to drive and the paint opens up for Doke down low.

As a basketball coach, I was told to not adjust your line up to the other team, especially if you had the superior talent which KU does against just about everyone on their schedule. You stay in your lane and force the other team to adjust to you and KU's current roster isn't suited for a 4 guard offense because of the lack of shooting. It's suited for a traditional offense with 2 traditional bigs and Self needs to fully embrace bully ball to make that run this year.

If Silvio doesn't come back next year he is a fool, but to honest - call me callous - I'm not sure that I want him to come back. Enaruna needs to play more next year (probably should play more now, but - you know Bill - it's not going to happen).

Oh, if he is banned - which I don't see happening - no doubt he'll be gone.

We have a long, fast athletic team and players who have bought in to playing defense. We also have a catalyst in Marcus.

I'm not ready to give them a defensive trophy yet. They still have a ways to go. They still don't smother like a Nova team. If they did that, no one in this country could beat us or even come close because they wouldn't score more than 40 pts.

To get to that level, we still need to bump it up a gear. I hope we get there by March.

Last night was more of a show of where ISU is this year. A weak team up to now. That explains winning at a 50% clip.

This team will definitely expose all opponents who are weak. I think we get a bump because other teams respect us a bit too much. And to the naked eye, we just look flat out amazing from a size and athletic view. But take last night for example... ISU still launched up plenty of trey shots that didn't fall and weren't contested. This is where we received too much respect. Those shooters were thinking less about netting the shot and more about a KU defender coming in from blind side to smoke their shots.

I don't want to appear negative, because I'm not. I'm happy where we are in January but I'm realistic to think we still aren't a Final Four team yet not only because of offense having kinks. Let's just hope we continue to improve at this rate. We will get there!

I like that they didn't let up, like in years past. They put their foot on the throat and left it there.

Watching the Baylor/Tech game some things stood out.

Baylor does not play zone with this group. They have 5 guards that can play with anyone. Vital rebounds (he's a pest), Clark is still not 100% and Gillespie is a glue blue collar guy out there. Tough team to play against.

Tech is super small, don't have a player over 6'7 in the lineup. Holyfield and Clarke are really stretch bigs that can handle it especially Clarke who's really a PG out there and their best passer. Ramsey is their best player, sort of in the Jarrett Culver mold. Can't imagine he sticks around for year two the way he's playing.

We're about to find out how good our 4 guard lineup can really be facing these two clubs. Both these clubs will go 5 out at times on offensive sets which we all know is KU's Achilles heal

Both defend at a high level. Tech defends the 3 point line like their life depends on it @HighEliteMajor.

Another defensive principle that you usually don't see. Tech won't trap the post entry but they will bait you to go over your right shoulder and bring a secondary defender over to either block the shot, foul, take a charge or double team the player going up for a shot. I saw this numerous times where Baylor didn't recognize or didn't run a guard or player cutting to the hoop for an easy basket. Tech figured the player wouldn't be savvy enough to pass it and it was effective defensive tactic. Beard is a dude

Beard is definitely a dude, can flat out coach! It will be interesting to see where Tech finishes this year. Do you want a crystal ball prediction (though a no-brainer)? It is going to be damn hard for them to keep him in Lubbock. Once Shaka gets canned the Longhorns will come calling.

Has anyone seen Butler or San Diego State play this year? How good are those guys, really? I haven't seen them play.

If ever there was a year for Roy to tell and teach his team to play dog defense and rebound I think that this be it.

Yup we did recruit Tshiebwe but West Virginia had the inside track with him from the beginning so there wasn't much we could do in that recruitment. Knowing what kind of player he was coming into College it's no surprise how he played against us in Allen. He'll be in the NBA next year.

As I recall Kentucky wanted him pretty badly too.

@BeddieKU23 Interesting indeed. It is already paying off.

HighEliteMajor said:

@BeddieKU23 One wonders what a change in focus would have brought us over the past 10 years, recruiting wise, seeing Agbaji and Braun. I suspect it might have rendered better return than the mostly empty chasing of the presumed OADs. Add Brauns and Agbajis to the Wilsons, Enanuras, etc. - guys like that who have high level talent as well. But hey, we got one season of Kelly Oubre, so we have that ... and we can say he's in the NBA. I know that really excites me.

What you just brought up is not a mute point.... Personally, I say recruit the hell out of the Agbajis and Brauns of the world - they're winners. When we land a bigtime recruit - and we have and will - that is fine and good, but there is bigtime talent being brought up in Wichita and KC that cannot be ignored.

SR Dotson would likely be the single greatest guard season under Bill. We haven't seen a trajectory like this at KU under Bill that I can recall. Outside of three point percentage his numbers aren't that far off of SR Frank. Guessing some people don't want to see it to hold out hope for him staying.

That's saying a lot given the Sr year Mason had but its certainly possible given how advanced his role is compared to where Frank/Devonte were at this time. If he really did elevate his jump shot and play-making to the next level there's no reason to think he wouldn't be a rockstar. Given how much Frank/Devonte improved Jr/Sr year under this staff its not out of the question.

Imagine Jr Dotson, Sr Garrett, Jr Agbaji, Soph Braun, Jr McCormack in the starting 5.. WoW

Not saying you are but for anyone wondering or thinking I'm super far off just directly compare Dotson this year to Frank's SR year on sports reference. Now obviously Dotson could plateau and this is 99% a moot point anyway but it's fun to think about.

Like @jayballer73 I don't think Bryce is a bench player. Even in this situation I think Braun still comes off the bench.I

Garrett Thompson Agbaji Braun Dave is still very good. :)

That lineup is great, and don't discount the other players that we have signed. You missed one though, Enaruna. He is going to be a stud.

Well neither may stick in the league but I'm going to remain optimistic.

I think there's little chance Dotson doesn't get drafted at least as a 2nd round pick. He's been holding steady as a 2nd rounder since last year and the most recent update from ESPN (who have guys plugged into the league/GM's) had him going 51st. He's the leading scorer at Kansas. The last two PG's that led their team in scoring both got drafted in the 2nd round (Mason, Graham). A lot of season left for him to elevate his profile.

I knew that Graham given the right circumstances - Charlotte is perfect, considering he is from North Carolina and they traded Kemba - could make it in the league, and Mason still can as well. I think that the Knicks, for example, could use a Frank Mason.

He's only 20 years old. Not saying he'll be drafted but I do think he'll get a look or two from someone intrigued with him.

Dok is a great college player, and I hope that he gets his degree - he will not be an NBA player nor will Dotson. The players now on our roster who have a chance to be in the NBA : Agbaji, Enaruna, Braun and Harris.
