For those living outside the general KU area, it provides a cheap way to get KU games. Additionally, there are a lot of non-Power 5 games that are interesting. I find myself watching mid-major which makes me admire the KU game even more!

Wow, talk about trying to put a positive spin on things Lol.... On the positive side KU nation, you now get the chance to watch other teams play.

Coming out of hibernation for this one topic because I'm really aggravated by it. Jeff Long says this: “Kansas being on is a tribute to our success and the demand that people have to watch Kansas basketball,” he said. “So you can understand why ESPN and Big 12 Now chose Kansas.”

Have you ever heard such a ridiculous statement? I mean a move that makes our team lest visible, less relevant he tries to spin it into something somehow good. A good AD would have gone ape crap on ESPN's people/Big 12 people and said something.

I've paid for ESPN for the last 15 years or so. Now as a reward they tell me I've got to pay more to watch my favorite team. It's the problem with businesses like this. There's no one really to complain to. You get treated badly at Walmart, or Culvers and you go to the manager and register a complaint and at least get heard. How do you complain about ESPN? Drive to Bristol and ask to see the boss?

To top it off, a marquee game on our schedule with the two marquee coaches in the conference and no one out of WVU and KU is going to watch. Now I went and checked Duke, none, I guess the ESPN owned ACC network takes care of that. Same with Kentucky and the SEC network. MSU gets the benefit of the fabulous BTN, and we get stuck with deciding whether to pony up a relatively small fee.

So far I haven't paid this year of course meaning I've missed a bunch of games already which I hate. Tomorrow I'll probably find a 5 dollar bill laying around and pay up, but I won't be happy about it. Jeff Long, if you're reading this, do us all a favor and quit. This is just a job for you, go back to Ohio.

(hi everyone, still reading)

I couldn't agree more.... You nailed it.

Or not.... you do know I have a way of jinxing everything. Ha. But seriously, Braun isn't going to be taken down by a jinx. He is definitely showing he has a solid basketball IQ, especially since he is just a freshman. And how do you like that outside shot of his? I'm expecting him to develop into a 40%+ shooter from trey sometime in his KU career. And a player with ice in his veins.

I believe that Braun is a future pro.

HighEliteMajor said:

@jayballer73 Of course KU can win a national title. Of course they’re in the discussion. Someone stating the obvious.

But to you’re point .. we’ve all watched enough BB to know that this offense can’t win a NC the way the game is played in 2020, the way it is functioning now.

Cliff Clavin always has the answer though.

Okay, then we'll win it this year by playing the way that it was played in 1920.

Best: Marcus and Doke.

Good: Ochai playing great D. I have no probs with Braun and Tristan off the bench on D. I wish Lightfoot was available.

Need: Moss to heat up, and I'm still hoping Dotson figures out how to be a team leader.

We're going to need Dot to shoot from the outside, can't all be dribble drive - though usually effective.

RIP Jalen Wilson • Jan 05, 2020 02:00 PM

The only reason for Wilson to redshirt would be if he is still not ready to go come mid-February. If able to go I think that he will contribute in a variety of ways, like at the 4 rebounding the ball and getting put backs, even stepping out for the occasional three. If able to play coach will play him.

Nice... A Big Monday game on ESPN+. I am hoping that atleast two or three potential recruits might get the chance to watch KU play this year.

Welcome!

@BShark My point is that it's ESPN+ which has to be paid for separately and hardly no one has. They negotiated a terrible deal.

approxinfinity said:

They can't have their cake and eat it too. If they want to let us have completely a la cart programming where we can get internet for $40/mo and pay for only ESPN+ ($5/mo for only bball season) and in my case MASN ($10/mo for baseball season?) then I'd be totally down. But they won't let us have ESPN+ without having a cable package with FIOS? They can F right off.

Kansas is one of four major basketball powers, is it too much to expect them to have their games televised on cable? I mean, for real, some cheap ass streaming service?

dylans said:

Kcmatt7 said:

Better to have games on ESPN+ than on Time Warner that half of the Metro Area doesn't get.

Yup the last two deals have been total bullshit. Obviously negotiated by amateurs or someone trying to undermine Kansas. KSU grad AD... 🤔

Agreed. Before, almost every big game was on ESPN/ESPN2 or U, CBS, ABC or whatever... Now, almost all are on the shoddy - to say the least - ESPN+. A bigtime money grab, leaving many fans out in the cold. Meanwhile Duke, UNC and UK are still business as usual, being seen by everyone. Nice.

Not a big ESPN+ fan... For real, who negotiated the television contract, Epic fail.

I think we will continue to see Braun get more PT and Tristan will be squeezed out of the rotation during league play. Tristan just has not progressed as the season has gone on and Braun is coming on it seems.

I'm a bigtime Braun booster, think that Enaruna will pick it up too.

Yup. Product of the last couple HS classes being WAY down, quite a few kids sitting out from transfers, the blue bloods getting fewer top players, and more leaving early to go pro.

Very good points - -kind of disappointing in a way

Times they are a changin. My hope is after OAD goes away we get something like the baseball rule where teams can count on more continuity. While there won’t be as much talent, coaches will have more than a year to get a team to really gel and the product will get better.

Boom! Thank you @FarmerJayhawk! Without trying to sound like an "Oh, you don't want the kid to succeed!" kinda guy, I've been thinking the same for years... I'll take it a step further. Why not after oad we go to something similar to,,, Whatever, Something.... Anything is better than now.

Currently, hardly no continuity in college at all, and the pro game has suffered even more - guys in their 2nd or 3rd year who are still not ready to play, very bad product. People forget, the NBA - college as well (not supposed to be, but is) - is a business. If you don't play well, you don't play. And eventually people don't watch.

Thoughts on KU 2020 • Dec 28, 2019 06:21 AM

Braun showed up bigtime in Philly, and it was obviously not a fluke. He's got a nice shot, it will come, and while his D needs work it too has improved. He will only get better. Alot of it is (the same for most players) his having to adjust to the speed, schemes and better competition.

2020 Transfer List • Dec 21, 2019 09:21 PM

@dylans Ah, the me-me aspect....

One of the biggest problems that I have with the NCAA (aside from the oad rule, which is just absurd)? They cherry pick, go after two or three schools instead of fixing the problem when the entire stinking mess is blatantly right under their noses - that being the connection between AAU recruits, apparel companies and the universities they give billions to. Can they fix it? No. Why? Because the NCAA does not own high school kids or their coaches - nor does it own certain universities, though it would like to.

@FarmerJayhawk That's about what I was thinking, seven or eight. And all pretty highly rated.

FarmerJayhawk said:

Penny pulled some wild things to get Wiseman to Memphis too. Pretty sure they weren’t all totally on the up and up.

I hear you there. That recruiting class? Not a chance in hell that it was on the up and up. How many players did he sign again, and what rank?

I'm thinking that he did not want to be questioned by the NCAA. And why would he?

No , I'm not talking about being the head Coach - - I'm talking about Danny working with our Big men like he had previous while he was on staff here

In a heartbeat. Imo our bigs have been nowhere near what they were when Manning was around - and that's going back a ways. I think that he would also help land more than only a few quality recruits.

KU First in Conference in 3pt % • Dec 17, 2019 08:07 PM

It is all part of a diabolical plan, ladies and gentlemen - this team has a great shot at winning the National Championship. Is Braun struggling? Yes. But he is struggling only due to the competition, not due to his ability. He will only get better, and we're going to need his outside shooting (and Coach knows that). I am sold on this teams defense!

Yeah I think he stays. Maybe 20 years ago he heads to the league. But now the players run it and he can’t exert his alpha as much. He has a college coach personality and he owns Lawrence.

And if he went pro he’d still have to recruit, especially to San Antonio. And especially in today’s NBA where players are demanding trades more than ever.

I don't see it happening, just like I don't see Lincoln Riley leaving Norman to go coach the Cowboys, and for the same reasons.

Recap of last night:

Duke crushed Michigan St again. I can't remember how many times in a row Duke has beaten sparty now.

Louisville overwhelmed Michigan in a Virginia slow mo type game

FSU got crushed by Indiana. Was surprised by that one.

Baylor won by 32.

Texas won by 10 over UAB at home. They wouldn't be 7-1 if they played real teams.

TCU beat Illinois St by 12

Some takeaways - MSU is not a national championship contender.

  • Louisville is solid, but very beatable.

  • Michigan is not a Top 10 ten.

  • Archie can coach.

  • Baylor is for real.

  • Texas is nowhere near being a Top 25 (don't even think about it AP!) team

  • TCU is still TCU.

Hell, their 2 point shots as well. Just 12-39 from 2...wow. Their defense continues to be elite though.

I wonder if Michigan State after getting killed by Duke finally falls in the Kenpom/Torvik etc rankings.

What is wrong with Michigan State? I kind of thought to begin the season that they were a little overrated, but have since adjusted to way overrated.

Is it possible for Self to get back to his roots? A team that locks down on D, runs when provided the opportunity, and values every possession - no turnovers, only shots at the rim or open threes. Not as slow as Virginia, but the point is to frustrate the other team. They get a poor shot late in the clock or jack up a quick shot and then have to wait on Kansas to run their stuff 20-25 seconds of offense before an open shot. Devastating.

The scores would come down, but the March success should go up. We may holler about the lack of threes being shot or the slower

Man, you're right! How could I forget Pollard? Guess it's easy to do when you consider just how loaded that Jayhawk team was come his junior-senior season.

2020 Recruiting • Dec 03, 2019 07:23 AM

@jayballer73 It would be far from bad if we somehow were able to land not only JT Thor, but also Zeus Williams and Poseidon Jackson all in one fell swoop.

Offense Coming Around.... • Dec 03, 2019 07:10 AM

I hear that we are recruiting Dennis Rodman, Jr. Lol. But serious, that guy could flat out rebound (Sr. that is) - T-Rob was our worm. Interesting that as big as Doke is he doesn't rebound better.

It's certainly not because he is too weak or short, or for that matter not being quick enough. Too bad, if he were a Great - and I do mean Great - rebounder (bad free throw percentage and injuries aside) he would be a surefire first round pick.

Silvio and Dave aren't doing to great as the 1 in the 4-1. At least the last game. I can see maybe Tristan playing the 5 spot if doke gets in trouble??

Tonight's starting five should be Dok, Tristan, Braun, Dotson and Moss. Silvio, Agbaji and Garrett need to come off the bench, if for nothing else because they can play multiple positions giving us added depth - this is a prime example game where not having Wilson could hurt (though I expect us to win).

I know I'm going to catch hell for calling for Braun to start, so be it, but we need his outside shooting this season - no better time than the present. It will pay off bigtime come Big12 play.

My fears about Och being distracted actually seemed to be the opposite. He's probably been overthinking the game and needed the break to have a fresh start.

At least, I hope this pans out throughout the tourney. And Dot needs to keep establishing himself as the leader of this team.

The problem with Och is that he has always just played while flying way under the radar. But there are now expectations - people talking and him thinking about his being in the NBA - and he is not dealing with them very well.

What he needs to understand is that he is only a sophomore, and needs to just play and work on his game while trying to be a student-athlete and get his degree. If he does that he will be fine and the NBA will be there, if not he might - give him to mid-season - have to come off the bench. He is thinking way too much.

@Marco I do think Cronin is a good fit. Boring basketball is right. Just north of UVA. But I think he's a winner. Will be interesting to see where that sits two years from now. And man, Bill Walton is a guy that is fun to listen to ... for about 5 minutes. I don't dislike the guy but I don't like that messing up my hoops.

Agree on Walton, too many whimsical life/political points to my liking. "Newsflash Mr. Walton, it's a basketball game." We disagree on Cronin, though. I don't think that style of play will translate well out west. But we'll see.

KU gets BYU tomorrow night. Cougars beat UCLA by 15.

The Hawks better show some perimeter D in the semis. BYU shot the lights out, especially from three.

Now, the good news: Walton won't be calling the game. (Bilas & Shulman).

I watched most of the UCLA-BYU game, wasn't impressed. The Bruins didn't lose due to lack of personnel, they were just outhustled and outplayed, period. I'm not a big Cronin fan, wasn't when he was at Cincinnati either. The guy can coach, no doubt, but the system is just, well, pretty damn boring. The time to poach some Cali players is now, now, now.

If we don't beat BYU by double digits I will be very surprised. And, oh man, am I glad that Walton isn't calling the game - Shulman and Bilas I like. Walton is, I just gotta say it, an out of his element weirdo. Man, but how old are those BYU guys anyway? They have one guy who is all but completely bald, Lol! I realize that they go on missions, but I thought they were for 2 years, not 20 😂
