@DanR Braun is from Burlington, originally. He and his family moved to Olathe so that he could improve as a player.

@Marco I've got a buddy that is now involved with Sunrise. Kendall is a baller and likes KU a lot. I will share any updates on him that I can.
Would appreciate that.
I'll take Tristan over Hurt and Stanley any day of the week. He will ball at KU and in the NBA (Stanley will too, eventually), but what will Hurt do? Feeling real good about our class.
Hope with UCLA being down we might be able to steal a player or two from Cali in about 2 or 3 years.

Believe me, I'm as giddy for Tristan as you are. Seeing him finish those drives to his left... wow... they are so fluid you have to hit the slo mo button just to see them! The kid is a phenom, but we also know what happens to freshman phenoms; sometimes the phenom shows up for games, other times it is the freshman. He's a guy we can almost be sure of him making a major contribution this year, but we will just have to wait and see when it comes to crunch time and I hope we are counting on other players with more experience to carry most of that weight.
I think we all worry a bit too much about this team. It's still November. Breakthroughs tend to come over the Christmas break when the guys get to put extended practice runs in. And then consider that we don't have a real powerful conference this year. Our guys should have plenty of time to get their act together before March.
I hope someone on our coaching staff realizes how to deal with Doke and his FT shooting. It's all in his head. He's been shown form, and he's been given reps using better form. Then he goes to the line and it looks like he's throwing a greasy fish at the goal. It's all about him maintaining emotional control. On the positive... I think someone is addressing this with him now. I still have hopes he will awaken his soul into the present and become a real monster this year including shooting better at the line! Doke has scary potential if he learns to play and live mindfully.
For this team I just hope they learn to play like their starving. It's hard for kids to keep a chip going all year. So hard to say what is best for them at this stage... maybe losing! Izzo sure knows how to play that card!
I don't think we're going to have to worry about this one hitting a wall, only up, up, up for him. It would be a shame for him to leave too early, though. Imagine what he will be come his junior year, if we get to see it - him, Braun and Wilson wrecking havoc.
I like the Agbaji - before he got hurt - of last year, who just played and was happy to much better than the one this year who seems to be overthinking things while dreaming of the NBA. Most players can deal with higher expections but some not, I hope Och is not the latter.

@Marco So help me, how is this a "double-standard"? And so you know, the money isn't going to the NCAA. It goes to a charity of Wiseman's choice by the way. The NCAA doesn't need his $11,000.
@mayjay Not defending the NCAA time frames here fully, but if you're going to posture that deciding the Wiseman issue vs. the KU/Adidas stuff was even near the same level of complexity, then I'm not sure really what to say there -- if that's what the "cud" comment means. Of course, we really didn't fully cooperate. We weren't fully "transparent." We know that. There was a federal trial. There was waiting for that to conclude. On other items, I can't quite figure it out. This one, I'm more understanding.
Lol! Then he should start the Broke College Athlete Fund Foundation...

@HighEliteMajor I find the distinction pretty blurry, maybe because I'm not taking the time to parse the definitions involved ("booster," etc). What irritates me more is how the Wiseman judgment happened in a matter of days while Silvio had to wait months.
It’s blurry because the NCAA doesn’t differentiate in its own bylaws or penalty schedule. There is no distinction. Period. The NCAA just makes it up as they go. So Wiseman has until April to pay back $11k while not permitted to make any money and maintain eligibility. I don’t know what his mom does for a living but I doubt she’s got that kind of cash just laying around.
Thank you, was thinking the exact same thing - that would have to be one hellacious part-time job for Wiseman the broke college athlete to have that kind of cash laying around, now wouldn't it? How much do you want to bet that the NCAA will be all in favor of - having no qualms at all - Mr. Wiseman even borrowing the money, so long as it goes into their coffers. I smell a bigtime stinky double-standard fart.
@Hawk8086 That's kind of where I'm at. I knew that coming in Tristan was a future pro, but thought we'd have him for atleast two and possibly even three years. Now, well, I'm not so sure.
Not often that a good player (atleast not a highly rated one) comes out of Nebraska - snag, if we can. If memory serves wasn't TJ Pugh the last Nebraska kid to don a KU uniform?

Yeah, I got to know about Jossell in advance due to a friendship not that it was even really a secret.
I hope you guys liked his commitment video edit. :D
Hard to see Anselem getting away from LSU regardless.

He's athletic, which is nice, but he's also small, so all of my normal complaints about smaller guards apply.
He can shoot it, but at his size, he's going to have to become a primary ball handler. He simply cannot rely only on off ball skills at the collegiate level. That won't cut it because he likely won't be able to guard bigger guys, even with his above average athleticism.
In all honesty, though, I think this kid should be ranked higher. He's small, but he can shoot, he can handle, and he is very athletic for his size. Looking at a couple of the dunks that he has thrown down, I am surprised he is only a three star. I would have pegged him as a low four star based on the eye test. He should be top 150 IMHO, borderline top 100.
Agree he will have to develop into a PG.
The crazy thing to me is that before KU sniffed around and even after up until his commitment this kid was completely unranked. Didn't even have a 24/7 profile. He did have a Rivals profile but 0 stars/ranking. I am not saying this is a huge miss like Burke, Oladipo, Morant etc because he is not on that level but to be completely unranked was shocking to me.
Agreed. Even if he were a total scrub (which he is not), there should and would be some kind of ranking, right? I trust Coach, he wouldn't offer if the kid couldn't contribute in some way - an aside thought, is there someone other than Muscadin that Jossell knows who HCBS would like to sign?

I know we all like Garrett. But I think Garrett is one of those players that possibly blocks a team from reaching its potential when he plays too many minutes. On a Bill Self run team, Garrett is "pet" like. Meaning he's easy to love because he's smart, defense is great, and has high intangibles.
I see next season and my first, favorite lineup is Thompson, Agbagi, Wilson, Enaruna, DeSousa. All in on the 4/1. Dave instead of DeSousa ok too. Rotate that.
Now, the uncertainty with Wilson makes that a bit grey. Bring Garrett off the bench at the 2-4 spots. Play 20 minutes. Garrett played 26 minutes and was a nothing offensively Friday. But I more focus on the Duke game where, once again, the defense didn't care about him at the three point line. Heck, in that game, he played 36 minutes, shot 38% from two and didn't even take a three.
The consistent production of the 3/2 concept is severely challenged with Garrett on the floor.
Garrett is the kind of player that, when played too much, really limits a team offensively as it stands now.
I had a Garrett thread. I don't remember what I called it but this is a large amount of my point. IE on a great KU team Garrett is a nice bench piece.
Last year we really had to play Garrett especially after all the issues. This year we are currently at 9 guys, so he's going to play.
Even with having to play him last year, KU was markedly worse with him on the floor vs off. People will blames the turnovers against Duke and rightfully so but Garrett was a big part of the loss as well.
Unfortunately Marcus is basically Jamari on steroids.
Oh man, Coach Marco like the Garrett debate. Better get @jayballer73 in on this one. As I recall, he is not a big Garrett fan.
We now have a great 4 man recruiting class - Coach did it again. @BShark you gave the 👀, who else do you think we're going to sign.

I personally think it is just the nature of basketball. Basketball, at all levels, is very prone to "runs" and swings in momentum. I see this happening all over the country on a regular basis. To me, it seems that it always has. Basketball is a hard game to manage with a lead.
It helps to have D, though. Tech is doing it just fine.
BShark said:
@Marco I think Wilson's best, and likely primary role is as a 4 under Bill. Marcus/Perry type but will likely take more threes than those two. From what we've seen I just don't think he is a guard/wing. Probably won't have the handles to be that at KU.
Oh and totally agree on Enaruna. His potential is enormous.
I see the same in Wilson, a stout guy without much handle who can rebound and shoot if open, but has trouble getting open if the ball is in his hands.

Stale blood in the assistant ranks?
Interesting point. I wonder if one of them will "decide" to retire during this NCAA stuff, which would, of course, make the NCAA unable to compel his testimony about his conversations....
But, that aside aside (yes, not a typo), the assistant coaches -- especially JH -- do an amazing job of recruiting in addition to skills and bench coaching. Norm seems less animated than before, but the others still are energetic, but I can't see how ass't coaches would undermine a cutthroat drive to polish the opponent off.
I think that it could be. Compared to the lockdown D that we were known for during Coach's first 8 or 9 years what we put out on the court now is nothing. The vibe during that time was just electric, and the offense fed off of it.
Beard was definitely paying attention under Knight, for sure. Wasn't that his mentor, Bobby Knight? All of of those switches and that D.
BShark said:
@Marco I think his potential is fantastic. I would bet on him starting to play as a RS SO then possibly starting the year after.
I'm pretty excited about our frontcourt future, no doubt. I like Braun, Enaruna and Muscadin alot, their ability (Enaruna is only going to get better) to run and handle, stretch the floor. It is all good in Bill Land. A damn shame about Wilson, it will be interesting to see what his role might be come next year.

Ryan on the Phog also said that when he committed he would be surprised if Tre sticks and goes to KU. Time will tell.
"Ranked in the top 40 nationally, White is a power wing who has a big body and combines some bounce with power. What struck me most was his skill level. He did some things with the ball (stepbacks, hesitations, changes of pace and direction) that I'd not seen from him in the past and he shot the ball with confidence. He backed up his lofty national status."
Man, I hope we can keep him. It has been a long while since we had a guy like that.

No way. Probably redshirts as he just isn't ready. He couldn't get off the bench at Sunrise.
I give you that... It is his skillset though that makes me feel otherwise. He can bring a changeup coming off the bench at both the 5 and 4.
We have lacked defensive intensity for quite a few years now (what, about 7?), and it's a problem. I think that it needs to be priority again. Cause? Stale blood in the assistant ranks?

@nuleafjhawk I'm not sure what @jayballer73 's problem is, but if Self were to leave, I agree with you and would definitely have Bennett number 1 on the list to replace. Without a doubt one of the best half dozen or so coaches in the game right now. Gets his players to commit to playing suffocating defense every possession of every game. Has won consistently without as much top tier talent as teams the Cavaliers face most nights in conference games (although the talent level has picked up the past few years). He's had 13 players drafted - 3 last year.
And, there is the small matter of being the most recently minted NCAA champion. Even more impressive in some respects is the fact that the Cavaliers have won the ACC regular season title 4 of the past 6 years - in a much, much tougher conference (certainly at the top) year in and year out than the B12.
I don't give a rats as about aesthetics myself - in fact, I enjoy watching teams struggling to score against them and routinely getting shot clock violations. And, Self likes to win ugly games, as well.
It's not a matter of choosing Bennett over Self or saying he is a better coach - but rather, who would be on the very short list of candidates to replace him. I have zero doubt that Bennett would be very successful at KU. Whether we could get him if Self left is another matter...
ummm HELLO you read? - - - like he pointed out him self - - we are not talking about who replacing who if who was to leave - - maybe start back at the 1st of this and see where it said anything about replacing lol - - -My problem with people like yourself almost coming the way it comes across is that trying to say Bobby Bennet is better so save the bs HAVE A GREAT NIGHT

@nwhawkfan I'm a geek, too. Which reminds me, I need to go out and buy my Street & Smith's and Athlon yearbooks (for real) - thanks for the reminder. I've always enjoyed the yearbooks.
@BShark Hurt will score, oh,,, about 11,, tops.
FarmerJayhawk said:
I'm less worried about Hurt. He's not a super mobile stretch 4. He's super skilled and kind of soft with average athleticism. Silvio is certainly quick enough to hang with him. I think Silvio is a defensive 4 and an offensive 5, skill wise. Actually sort of worried about Doke getting out on the perimeter if they stretch Carey and he decides to try at basketball.
But I'm not worried at all on the other end of the floor. If K decides to zone us we'll eat them alive on the boards and get plenty of second chance points. Watch out for a bunch of lobs behind the zone (might be a situation where Hurt gets teabagged...) I think our perimeter defense will be a shock to them as well. Tre Jones isn't a great offensive player and Moore/Stanley won't light you up. Only risk is if a guy like Jack White or Alex O'Connell gets stupid hot.
Going to say Jayhawks 71 Rutgers South 62
Thank you! Bully the hell out of Hurt with a Silvio, Enaruna and possibly, at times, even Big Dave - keep him out of his confort zone. I have us winning by 12.

@KirkIsMyHinrich Our best lineup is absolutely NOT a four guard lineup. Our best lineup is a traditional 3 out, 2 in look. Self's hi/lo is the perfect fit. We just have to impose our will and stop saying we can't guard the 4. We can.
That doesn't mean we can't or won't play four guards. In fact, switching it up here and there is certainly reasonable.
But to impose our will, and not be imposed upon, it's 2 bigs all the way.
Agree. Let them try to match up with us, which I don't think they can. I am tired of the small ball lineups, and now that we have frontcourt depth and talent it is still our best option? I don't think so. We will beat Duke by 12 points.

In fact, with the current NOA, it seems like a certainly.
Also assuming we don’t go to court and a court doesn’t stay the sanctions pending litigation.
KU will take it to court if the corrupt thing tries try to hammer us, and we would win. In all honesty, if it were to go to court, there is so much that can be brought up and so many cans of inadmissable worms to be opened, and while those cans may be inadmissable the court would see them none the less - a lose, lose for the NCAA.
