The Furph is, what, 17? His maturity level would be a problem hanging around older players with different, shall we say, perspectives on life. I’m sure his parents will have valuable input. I agree, the money is bigger every year he stays.

The second NBA contract is where the money is at. If properly developed, the sooner you get into the NBA the sooner you make generational wealth by getting to the second contract. It’s tricky - if drafted high enough you are pretty much guaranteed a few years, but beyond that your have to perform.

Being a KU homer I want to see them all stay until well seasoned. Furphy is on the Ochai development arc it appears, but will he stick the 3 it takes to fully develop into a NCAA game wrecker?

How many of KU's players that have stayed until they are "seasoned" have gotten that big second contract? Only 4 KU players in the last decade have signed those life changing, generational wealth creating deals and 3 were OAD players. Embiid, Wiggins, Oubre, and Graham are only KU players drafted in the past decade to sign big second contracts.

@kjayhawks There's a real chance they go 0-18 at this point. Yesterday was by far their most winnable game against Vanderbilt. Their other two remaining winnable games against Arkansas and LSU are both road games so I wouldn't be surprised if they run the table at this point.

The Furph • Feb 04, 2024 07:18 PM

To put into perspective how good KU's offense was yesterday, here's a list of every other time UH has given up 78+ points since the beginning of the 2018-19 season began which is when they became relevant nationally.

March 7, 2019 - SMU scored 79 points in a loss

November 19, 2019 - Rice scored 89 points in a loss

November 22, 2019 - Oregon scored 78 points in a win

February 3, 2021 - East Carolina scored 82 points in a win

April 3, 2021 - Baylor scored 78 points in their Final Four win

December 11, 2021 - Alabama scored 83 points in a win

February 9, 2022 - SMU scored 85 points in a win

March 24, 2023 - Miami scored 89 points in a Sweet 16 win

Houston is arguably the best defensive team in the country and KU's starting 5 made them look bad. I fully agree with Jeff Goodman's assessment that when KU's starting 5 is on and playing well, they are the best starting 5 in the country.

KU vs Houston Game Chat • Feb 04, 2024 12:38 AM

Best all around performance of the season. Only team to hang 70 on UH in regulation this season. 18 turnovers is the one black eye for today for Kansas otherwise this is probably a 25 point win. Shooting almost 70% for the game against that defense is insane because UH is legitimately a top 5 defense in the country.

Today is why KU was the preseason #1 because when they play like this, nobody can beat Kansas. KU is also 4-1 against current top 10 teams so we know our ceiling is high enough to win a title because nobody else has done that so far this season that I'm aware of.

Thoughts On 2024 Schedule • Feb 01, 2024 06:47 PM

Avoiding Utah and Oklahoma St. is huge this season. Utah getting Cam Rising and their RB back are why they won back to back Pac 12 titles and will probably be the B12 favorites this year. OSU is still going to be strong with Ollie Gordon coming back so missing then is huge. If Arizona was returning in tact, that'd be very advantageous to miss, but I think they take a big step back with the coaching change.

10 or 11 wins could be a realistic possibility for KU this season if they stay healthy.

@approxinfinity I didn’t realize they had traded away so many players so I’ll shut up lol. I just don’t have faith in the G

The G-League today isn't what it was 15 years ago. 29 of the 30 NBA teams have their own G-League affiliate now. Only Phoenix doesn't have one now. That means that NBA franchises now are controlling the development of their young players by controlling who the coaching staffs are, who the training and support staffs are which means those G-League teams are developing the skills the NBA franchises want to see developed. Like I said earlier, 50% of the players on the NBA today have spent time in the G-League. By the end of the season, that number will be over 50%. At the end of last season, the number was at 55% of players that had spent time in the G-League. Those numbers will only continue to rise as older players retire that developed before going to the G-League was common.

@kjayhawks said in The Furph:

@Texas-Hawk-10 maybe you guys know more about than me but I still don’t see players developing in the NBA. I see them overseas very quickly if they don’t have that 3 year contract.

Dick was a lottery pick. Toronto is going to do everything they can to develop Dick into the best player he can be. This is why he's spending time in the G-League because NBA teams have generally figured out how to use the G-League system now to develop players.
He's down to get game minutes to work on the holes in his game against game competition which right now is moving and playing without the basketball which was an issue for him at KU as well.

KU vs Cryclones Game Chat • Jan 27, 2024 10:51 PM

The defense is bad at this point. Furphy and Jackson can't guard statues, Dickinson's knee has further limited his already limited mobility on that end. This is causing a significant drop in defense from Harris, McCullar, and Adams as well because we know those three range from very good to elite defenders.

This team is really missing Arterio Morris right now. I'm not saying that KU screwed up by kicking him off the team because Morris absolutely deserved that for his actions, but his skill set is desperately missing from this team this season. His defense was up there with Adams and KU would be a top 10 defense with him.

He was also the guy that could've gone and gotten his shot whenever he wanted to help with spacing on the floor. He also would've allowed Elmarko to play off the bench from the start and taken a lot of pressure off of him early. KU probably has better bench production as well with that rotation instead of what we have now.

Self's got at least two more roster spots he can fill next season so getting a high level, playmaker guard should be the top priority in the portal this offseason.

@kjayhawks said in The Furph:

@FarmerJayhawk hasn’t he already been to the G league twice so far this season and it’s not even all star break yet?

What exactly do you think the purpose of the G-League is? Would you rather the Raptors have Dick as a DNP-Coaches Decision, or have him playing in the G-League getting meaningful minutes and coaching from the Raptors staff? Going to the G-League as a rookie doesn't have the stigma attached to it that it once did. The Phoenix Sun's are the only team that doesn't have a G-League affiliate at this point.

50% of NBA players this season have spent time in the G-League at some point. Pascal Siakim, Rudy Gobert, and Jordan Poole are among those who spent time in the G-League early on. Playing in the G-League isn't the issue you think it is because it's grown and developed to the point that it is a true development league that by the end of this season, the majority of the players in the NBA will have come through at some point.

Harbaugh officially going to the Chargers. Current Michigan OC Sherrone Moore is the heavy favorite to replace Harbaugh. Should something fall through there, Leipold's name will likely get strong consideration.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzies. Pretty much foretelling of KU’s future ineptitude once Lance is gone. Lawrence is not a football destination and no amount of money will change that.

Reality is what it is. This season was only KU's 7th time ever winning 9+ games in a season amd only the second time making a bowl game in back to back seasons.

Long term, post Leipold era, I'll be happy if KU can maintain as a program that can make a bowl game about 75% of the time (3 out of 4 years), and not change coaches every 3-4 seasons due to ineptitude.

I happened to run across my post from Feb 14, 2019, where we were all trying to figure out what would happen with the NCAA case. I was arguing that they had no proof KU knew about Adidas' shenanigans, but they could still get us for having ineligible SDSousa:

" If they hold KU responsible for everything adidas did, it will be bad. If we show we had no way of knowing, then vacating wins and the F4 are probably the result."

Every once in a while it is fun to find out I was so smart when I was younger!

Sorry....

I posted the same thing, don't know when my first post about was, probably the day the NCAA announced the investigation that KU would end up vacating the games Silvio played in as a freshman.

It's his alma mater and likely better pay than here. As much as people talk about why would anyone who's affiliated with KU want to leave here, A&M is one of those places as well and Mayne even more so than here because there is a running joke abiut Texas A&M being a cult.

Yea, but losing to bottom dwellers outta the gate does not seem to be a good conference winning strategy.

Getting owned on the glass by a smaller team is just lack of effort. That's all today is on defense is a lack of effort. At some point, these players have to decide they want to man up and put some effort in, otherwise KU is going to have losses to 2 of the 3 worst teams in the Big 12.

Being 23 is a big handicap regarding draft position. ???

If Dickinson was an NBA caliber player, he'd already be in the NBA. 25 years ago and he'd be a top 3 pick because his lack of athleticism wouldn't be a big issue. Now, it's the reason he'll never be an NBA player and will make his living playing around the world instead. It's not a bad trade off, but the money is nowhere near what it is in the NBA. I would say more likely than not, HD is playing in Lawrence next season because he'll make more in NIL than any other option he'll have.

Can you imagine if we had Grady and Hunter on the same team? Oh the spacing! I think the space of having 3 or 4 threats to score from beyond the arc on the floor at the same time is the biggest reason for the improvement in scoring and rebounding. Furph is also oddly, more of a threat in transition than we've seen from Elmarko (who seems fast and like a good finisher at the rim?).

It will be interesting to see how he holds up once some film gets out on him and some of the big 12 coaches make some plans to stop him. But he's at least made it clear, there has to BE a plan to stop him or he will score in bunches. 15 in the first half? Whew!

Elmarko has always played with the ball in his hands. He's having to learn how to play without the ball and we're all seeing how much he's struggled with that change in roles.

Saw on the scores scrolling by that the KU women got their asses handed to them tonight losing by 35 to Texas. I know they upset Baylor over the weekend, but this season has been a disaster for KU. This looking like another season in which KU won't make a post season tournament which would be the 7th time in his 9 seasons that KU has failed to make any postseason tournament. He's made 1 NCAA Tournament and 1 WNIT in his first 8 years. Why is that acceptable?

KU women have made 3 NCAA Tournaments in the past 20 years. Our football program has more bowl appearances in that time. There's no reason why this program shouldn't make it to the NCAA Tournament most seasons with the resources they have, but instead KU has been one of the least successful major conference programs of the past 25 years.
