Did defend okay but yeah not good poise there
Heās helped off of reeves a bit much for my liking when his only goal should be preventing that dude from shooting a three
McDowell might not get much late run after that.
@approxinfinity weāve had bigs who have struggled in these types of matchups. Nice to see him get his for sure.
If you want to talk about trust, McDowell in to GUARD REEVES

@DanR it was kev, right?
We have at least one athlete.

Dickinson is slow to the post. They need to pass it around a bit to let him establish position.
The entry passes havenāt all been great but heās not creating a lot of space for the ball to get to him.
@DanR said in What to Expect at the Champions Classic?:
How have they taken 10 more shots? We're 13/31 and UK is 15 of 41.
Badly timed fouls and offensive rebounds I guess.
Turnovers
@kuballin10 Kentucky doesnāt really run anything. They just drive or Jack shots and then run to the rim. They are super athletes though so that can work. Especially if even the wild shots are falling.
@FarmerJayhawk said in What to Expect at the Champions Classic?:
Keep grinding. Theyāll shoot right back out of it
They arenāt taking a ton of quality looks. A lot of their threes have been DEEP and off pull ups and step backs. Not much you can do against a few of em. You step up to dillongham on those long ones, he goes right by.
@bskeet He's made a living off of those situations and has shot it VERY well when left open. Has had a few big games where he made 3 or more.
Doesn't Kentucky count their vacated wins from way back when?
@BeddieKU23 But can they shoot? I was told this team couldn't shoot. Any stats on that from the first real game?

Nope, he's just not very good (offensively).
Bill self can get a big with limited skill 10-14 points a game but not every coach can.
I do always wonder why there isnāt more transparent accountability for refs. They were TERRIBLE last night. The ISU return did not look like he stepped out, I remember three pretty blatant PI on third down that didnāt get called, the grim one being the most egregious. And how long did they review that āfumbleā that they had to overturn into what was CLEARLY an incomplete pass? Low hit on beans knee, questionable roughing the passer calls on both sides, just a big ole stinker from the officials that game.

I honestly wonder if we arenāt 8-0 with Jalen as our starter. We are lucky to have Bean in a lot of way. He probably could start at several power 5 schools if he transferred.
I don't think we beat Texas even with Daniels.
I feel like daniels getting cut from the starting lineup so close to the start of that game had SUCH an impact on our offense. The game plan has to be different for bean than for jalen.
Still donāt know that we beat Texas because their defense just is real good. But still a worst case scenario for that game and we were still in it for a while.
We beat OU not even playing that well. So tough to say what could have been.
@kjayhawks thatāll start filling it up for sure. A bet a bunch of folks are kicking themselves for not weathering that lightning delay today!
@nuleafjhawk What is sad is we could be in the game for 2.5 quarters and this still be the result. Just not sure we are at the UT/OU level yet. We will see if we've made it up the the KSU level yet, though I'm concerned because being at the KSU level means being competitive in those games with the upper echelon and even winning a few. We got UT a couple of years ago but not sure that was representative of our true place in the pecking order. I do think KU's offense will score 24+ so I'll say 45-24 with a close game throughout but OU pulling away late.
@mayjay My concern is more about trying to figure out who are going to be the good guys in the situation. And to be on the side of good is ALWAYS going to be a much more difficult task during conflict but that doesnāt mean we should t continue to strive for it.
I think itās also important to consider where all of this hatred comes from. Why are there a significant amount of people in Gaza who are staunchly opposed to Israel and its existence? Iām not excusing their violence or the atrocities that have been committed or agreeing with that position but itās still important to consider. And does indiscriminately bombing peoples homes and purposefully disrupting any kind of infrastructure or aid from getting to those who need it likely to foster more hatred or is it likely to inspire more hate.
And to be clear, Iām not saying trying to reason with the terrorists is likely to change their minds and hearts, but killing thousands of people including children whoās only crime was being born into this mess is going to make it difficult to bring about any kind of peace.
@mayjay so in your opinion āliterally millionsā of people are deserving of death by bombing at this point? Sorry but that sounds an awful lot like genocide.
Also, good luck to anyone who attempts to stop harboring a terrorist. Terrorists are generally pretty reasonable about such things and itās not like theyāve already shown a willingness to torture and murder pretty much anyone (Jew or not) at the drop of a hat.
Americans celebrate our death machines every weekend as they fly over our sports stadiums. Are those millions of people now deserving of death as well? Gotta be real careful where you draw that line.
@mayjay my ideal would be that everyone is held to the same standard and that innocent life is protected at all costs. Thatās my whole argument. The entire situation is one atrocity stacked on another. And a lot of US dollars and weapons are backing one side so admittedly more of my attention is on them upholding those beliefs because currently thatās where our influence lies.
@mayjay said in Hesela sounds ready to launch rockets:
@benshawks08 Israel is at war with a group pledged to the extinction of Jews, a group hiding in a population that harbors it and that refuses to accept Israel's right to even exist, a group that butchered hundreds of Israelis while laughing and sending proud videos back home.
Exactly how is Israel supposed to wage such a war?
My suggestion would be genocide to prevent genocide is not going to get anyone anywhere other than dead. The solution can't be as bad or even worse than the problem is all I'm saying. If there were an easy answer to your question, it would have been considered already by smarter people than me.
6000 bombs a week from Israel. About how many bombs the US dropped on Afghanistan and Iran in a MONTH at the peak of the bombings. Not sure how you underestimate the death toll from something like that. The Gaza Strip is significantly smaller than those countries. Many more bombs in a much smaller area means more people die. And bombs donāt tend to give a shit if you are innocent or not.
https://barackobama.medium.com/my-statement-on-israel-and-gaza-a6c397f09a30 ā
Donāt agree with everything in here but itās sentiment is pretty much the same as what I feel.
@FarmerJayhawk Iām not arguing Hamas is good but also not going to give IDF a pat on the back for not leveling an entire city. The ability to commit an even more atrocious war crime does not excuse the committing of a lesser one either.
The things Iāve seen have not so much been pro Hamas but instead trying to also hold Israel accountable for the atrocities theyāve committed as well. The bombing of the hospitals being the thing Iāve seen brought up most. Saying Israel shouldnāt bomb hospitals and should be held accountable for or at least not praised for what is clearly a war crime is very different than saying Hamas is good and has done no wrong in the situation. More than one thing can be true and in situations like this, is almost a guarantee that both sides have committed evil acts. That is not to say those evil acts are equivalent. But the response to a war crime is not commit a war crime right back.
Sounds like you may be seeing different reports and accounts than I am though.
@jayballer67 saw rumblings that he will play barring another set back. But canāt remember where I saw it.
So record predictions for the team this year?
@dylans so the only thing keeping native culture alive is rich white guys naming their sports teams? Or fans doing a chant or banging a drum? Sounds like Tang found out how much native culture still exists outside of those sports and was good enough to listen.
Reservation dogs is a great show. Prey, the most recent predator film, is awesome and thereās many many more.
Look. Iāve hated the chiefs for a long long time. So this is the last Iāll post on this thread. But many years ago I went to a Braves game with my partner and watched her experience their chant in person and thatās not an experience Iāll ever forget. So you know some natives think itās fine, there are a lot that donāt. Itās funny to me how some feel this isnāt an appropriate conversation for a sports thread. Think hard about that. Maybe just maybe that says something about how appropriate the name is for a sports team in the first place.
I hope the chiefs win this weekend so yāall can get back to talking ball.
@kjayhawks similarly my opinion comes more from listening to others rather than deciding for myself. My perspective comes from having a partner who is native as well as my brother in law, nephew, and soon to come son. So yeah. Itās personal to me. And notice I said, fine keep the name of you want to attach to it to one of the many uses for the word in our current vernacular. My biggest issue is with those who try to argue that the current iteration of the chiefs is unconnected to native culture when it so clearly is.
To the leave politics off this board comment, how is this politics? Did I say politicians should pass a policy forcing the team to change the name? Itās funny when people say a topic that makes uncomfortable to talk about is just politics and therefore inappropriate to bring up in whatever context.
@DanR The argument I always hear is the team was named after a fire chief so itās totally fine and not appropriation. But even if that is the case, the drum, the name of the stadium, the chant, and all other Native American references gotta go. If they want to rebrand the āchiefsā and make the whole thing fireman related, go for it. They can even keep the colors. But at this point itās probably easier and best to start over. Probably not gonna happen as long as they are winning super bowlsā¦
Anyone concerned about JD not being on the sideline and the kind of weird response from Lance about why he wasnāt?
UCF knows a comeback is possible. Gotta keep it up in the second half. Hopefully those long drives have a cumulative effect on the UCF d in the second half.
@dylans said in Say Goodnight to the Knights:
The team goes as the QB goes. With Daniels this team could be special, just like when Reesing was QB. But itās no different than any other team - the Chiefs would suck without Mahomes.
Bean had a bad game against Texas but I truly believe heāll be better moving forward. Heās a very good backup even if that didnāt show.
Is this UCF team better than Ok st was last year?
@Texas-Hawk-10 I mean. That at least turned out well.
@wissox said in Open as a 18 1/2 point dog to Texas:
Turning into a rout after the ill advised 4th and short call.
Heard a lot of chatter this week about this call. A lot of fans wondering why not just sneak it? I've heard two pretty decent arguments for the call but would be interested if anyone here has any others.
The first is that KU by running that play was staying true to their identity as an offense. And many have pointed out that with proper execution, the call itself probably would have worked. I can buy this. I've seen a ton of praise for Andy K and his creativity as a OC. Why change in the biggest moment?
The second is that UT's strength on their highly talented Defense is the D line, specifically the tackles. Meaning a sneak would be going right at their absolute best players. Would KU's O line have been able to get significant push against the best players on that Texas D? This argument works for me as well.
The third argument I've heard, doesn't hold as much water for me. That is the one where maybe Bean hasn't practiced much under center and is more comfortable in the shotgun. Going under center for a sneak would be risking a muffed snap and a turnover in an important situation. Two reasons this argument sucks. 1. Bean is a quarterback, he has to know how to take a snap under center. If we are afraid of a turnover from that, why in the world give him the biggest decision of the game on a triple option that guess what, ended in a fumble!? 2. We've seen KU run a successful sneak this year. It was called back because of a penalty. But the person taking the snap wasn't Bean, wasn't even JD, it was Jarod Casey! My fan brain with hindsight says put Casey under center on 4th and inches and let him be the Hero in Austin AGAIN.
But alas as the great Jackson Browne wrote, "And while the future's there for anyone to change, still you know it seems, It would be easier sometimes to change the past."

I'm sure glad I had the new Craig Johnson novel to distract me during the 4th Q. I'm still trying to find a single positive thing from that game.
It may sound crazy considering the amount of yards and point given up, but the defensive scheme and execution was actually good especially the first 3 quarters. That was the blueprint to beat Texas for the Kansas squad but the offense just fell apart. A few sustained drives in the first half from the offense would have COMPLETELY changed that game.
@kjayhawks said in Open as a 18 1/2 point dog to Texas:
Ya I feel like Texas is just trying to run up the score at point. Theyāre averaging like 9 yards a rush why pass the ball up 2 scores late?
Trying to get ewers some post season awards. Texas was just better even with a below average performance.
0 third down conversions makes it tough for bothe the offense and the defense.

On the plus side, UCF away early seems like a nice road game to kick start the conference season (I know itās game 2). And I like Cincinnati and BYU coming to the phog later in the slate. Feel like thatās a good chance to really let them know what Big 12 basketball is all about.
Ok so Baylor and Houston twice seems significant. Disappointing to only get ISU away. And then getting WVU away is another tough draw. Much rather not have to go all the way out there. Still think we win the conference by two games but havenāt looked at any of the other schedules.
@nuleafjhawk I'm not so sure it's the name on their jersey so much as the fact that they beat ALABAMA. That's the main reason they are up so high IMO
