We look unbeatable at home and then like we can’t win on the road (even when fully healthy)

March is going to either expose this team or show they are tough and can get it done

The other glaring issue is it shows how poor roster construction was which many on here pointed out this summer.

Per the metrics Juan is around the 6th-7th best pg in the big 12 and honestly that sounds about right

He had an alley oop and two steals to start a comeback and then sat on the bench as remy saved the day

@drgnslayr great post - this is what I’ve been saying all year. Bench sucks the 5th yr sr needs to step up and score more. There’s a reason when he scores double digits we are like 27-2 or something stupid.

I’d rather have a Frank but Juan is more than enough when he looks to score just half the time.

Juan can’t beat his man off the dribble which is why we don’t get many dump offs to Hunter or kj for dunks. Juan does play the pnr great when he’s aggressive to take the 3 and make the defense commit then the next time down he hits kj with that nasty pass for a dunk.

Even at 5 and an extra 30-35 games to break a record that was set in a 4 year period. If that’s some guys “reasoning” for why he’s the best KU pg there is a failing to grasp the reality

@FarmerJayhawk If you can’t distinguish between a guys career being 4 years holding a record and some guy playing 65-75 more games (6 years) and we celebrate breaking that record…I’m not sure how else you will ever grasp it. If Juan broke it in 4 years then heck yeah that shows it but doing it in 6 does nothing for Kansas or the record book and anyone with a brain gets that

Just like Mahomes breaking passing records of Peyton’s with 1 extra game. It doesn’t mean anything unless he did it in 16 games because the timeframe/schedule has changed.

Juan was excellent last night on the defensive end. He constantly turned the other team over.

Where people see that Juan always sets up his teammates I fail to see. He runs the offense and throwing a lob into Hunter who’s pinned his man for a layup isn’t Juan “creating” much.

Juan doesn’t actually create much for others. He doesn’t drive the lane and drop a pass off for a dunk to a big or do what Elmarko did and kick it into the corner for a 3. He gets assists by just quickly rotating the ball in the offense but not really attacking.

He’s his best in the pick and roll where he waits for kj to roll and throws a dime bounce pass for the dunk.

Juan has got to shoot the 3 more and Self has been on him and clearly needs to keep on him. Furphy isn’t going for 15 a game but if he can average 10 and Juan 10 we will be a tough out.

Open shots to try and get a better shot often leads to a turnover. Self runs sets so guys have open shots and then when Juan passes on a corner 3 it is insane….shoot the ball u got a great jumper dude!

Juan doesn’t have to score 18-20 a game like Frank but man he needs to hit double figures every single game

@FarmerJayhawk Not at all. A one year team championship versus an entire individuals career in which he may shatter records guys did in 4 years with 6 years of opportunity….thats not even close to the same

@drgnslayr That’s all I’m asking is him to hunt his shot especially from 3 more. Defenders don’t even guard him at times unless he comes in the paint

@approxinfinity I’ve never said to bench Juan that’s crazy talk. He’s the starting pg.

I’ve said:
1) shoot the 3 more and attack

2) Play better on ball D

3) shoot the frigging 3 he’s got a good shot

4) Let EJ play point 5-7 minutes a game to spell Juan. He’s looked more comfortable with the ball in his hands

He’s not playing well that’s evident.

Of course no coach gives up they work with what they have and adjust to try to win a title.

I’m saying the key is Juan and not the bench or some fifth starter stepping up. It’s been juan and always will be Juan that’s why the stat of when he scores like 12 or more we are darn near undefeated…..he’s the key cog and his play is bad.

Did he practice the three all summer to then not shoot during games? Did he get slower on defense because he’s bad 1v1 defensively unlike the title game…go back and watch night and day different.

You guys can hem and haw about all these other people that need to step up (literally this board just says the bench and fifth because everyone else besides Juan has been a stud and as advertised this year).

Eventually you all will see the light that Juan has regressed but if he can start playing better we can make a serious run in March.

So saying the offense flows better with Juan well yeah we have no clue how it flows without Juan.

Juan is the best pg on the team

For the offense to flow better Juan needs to shoot 4-5 threes a game. Our offense metrics with two All Americans is atrocious for a reason and it’s very easy to spot when watching the games.

Juan isn’t able to shoulder more of the load consistently . He can do it here or there but game in and game out nah. Just need him to be great in the tournament!

Juan was never aggressive driving the ball in 2022 when we were loaded he isn’t quick enough to beat his man off the dribble.

The proof is when he drives his body is taking him more towards the corner baseline than towards the goal.

He’s regressed in all aspects this year when he was supposed to step up and improve. That’s the issue and no one here seems to care…..oh the bench needs to score more and we’d be okay.

EJ and Furph are freshman and aren’t Wiggins I don’t expect them to “pickup” Juan’s slack…just comically bad lack of bball iq people saying “the bench” or these “freshman” need to makeup for it. If Juan averaged 10-12 a game like I’ve said you all would not say this.

When in Kansas basketball history has some not top 10 freshman caught flack for not scoring over the freaking 5th year senior catching no flack???

Braun - way more solid than I thought

This team goes as Juan goes and he’s been atrocious. He can’t beat his man off the dribble and he gets beat odd the dribble constantly. He’s resorted to trying to tap it out from behind cause he can’t stay in front of his man.

If he can’t score or look to shoot he has to generate opportunities it’s for guys which he doesn’t all he does is swing it around the perimeter. Since he can’t shoot he needs to D up.

Last pass first KU point anyone want to compare him to Juan?

@Crimsonorblue22 Furph is the man and not afraid. Self has figured this one out right just took a bit yet Furph was gone over December and wasn’t here as early as other guys. When look at the film and plus/minus it’s clear he’s night and day better than Elmarko so not sure why it took this long to replace him

@rockchalkjayhawk Self didn’t even think to let Elmarko spell Juan and have him run some point early on in the season. Not properly assessing the roster is on him.

Kevin is essentially the backup pg and KJ can bring it up much like draymond so we have options.

Elmarko is so explosive and the only guard that can get to the paint without a ball screen yet he never thought to maybe let him run some at the 1 even after seeing him play while recruiting him.

The ball and chain that is Juan to Self. Juan’s legacy as the point is this year and next when there are no Remy bailouts. Juan’s getting worse and more lackadaisical with the ball and still doesn’t look to score like he should. The offense with two all Americans is thus a top 40-50 offense due to just that. He’s a ball mover I.e he doesn’t attack the paint and can’t break his own man down one on one.

You’ve been warned and many are seeing it for the actual scenario versus the red and blue glasses

last two games we’ve turned it over 18 times and only forced 9

This is direct correlation to our guard play. Bigs aren’t causing turnovers right and left nor turning it over a bunch except when our guards throw terrible entry passes and put them in awful positions.

We supposedly have two defensive stud guards who are seniors yet we are the ones turning twice as much as we are causing other teams to turn it over

This is a correlation to how teams defend us because guys won’t look to score and teams know it. They also don’t drive and attack. Our pg doesn’t shoot a free throw hardly ever…it’s been documented how few free throws he’s shot versus other KU guard. It’s brutal. He isn’t quick

This is also a correlation to how defensively we are not laterally quick and often pushed off our spots when guys drive. Weak

Tough to make passes when no one gets Self’s patented (one dribble/foot in the paint each possession by the ball handler)

I’d warned many of you that this is a down year and was blocked.

We’ve had bad losses before and will again but 11-7 is this teams ceiling and second weekend maybe first if we play another team full of athletes like last year

You all love Juan yet without remy we lose to creighton round of 32. Bill’s blind but now has no where to turn because Juan is the best pg on this team.

Never have I read from enough message board know it alls that these new freshman need to score to help us…..Hell no how about the fifth year senior gets 10-12 a night because he’s unguarded for 85% of the freaking game. Even when he drives his own defender sags off waiting for his famous jump pass under the goal (jr high stuff if any of you know ball).

Juan HAS to score for us to be a top 5 team and beat the uk’s, Houston’s ect.

HE CAN DO IT yet he isn’t and every game he continues to not hunt his shot from the tip those passing lanes are tight because he can’t beat his man off the bounce. Most overrated player by Self in his coaching career. There’s a reason Remy played more minutes

Blow out losses to teams and “we have to get more athletic”…..was just our current guys taking the next step and bringing in Remy.

Self hasn’t delivered on more athletic since that statement

Self's attitude has been telling to me, as well. It may partly be the difference between a November tournament in Hawaii and a conference game in February, but he's been a bit subdued about our performance and more apologetic than angry. More like: "well, I thought the guys played pretty hard but just made a few mistakes, and we're playing a little better than the score" than his typically angry demeanor when his teams are playing like sh*t.
