What do you guys think of Isaiah Cottrell? Seems, if we sign him, to be an immediate contributor - not a star - who will work hard.

Program guy. Going to need more in that class. Dream 2020 class, assuming Dotson and Silvio go pro, and we land Wilson, Walker, and Bilau: Daishen Nix, Makur Maker, and Bryce Thompson. So the starting lineup would look something like Nix, Walker, Agbaji, Wilson, Maker. That team could play stupid, stupid fast.

Sooo Wilson had a good time in Chapel Hill (it’s hard not to tbh) but the hot rumor is it’s all KU

@FarmerJayhawk Oh? I don't and will never pay Shay so I couldn't actually read his article. Made it seem like a date was set though.

Idk what Shay said but I do know a date hasn’t been set yet. Also KU likes this kid a lot as a project.

@FarmerJayhawk That's pretty fair, college is expensive. Do you know what level he is looking at?

I do not. Cool thing about the portal is he’ll find out real quick. Dude could light it up at Washburn if he wanted.

Cory Evans saying he feels Kyree will stay in the class of 2020

I like Corey, I disagree though. KU wants him to pretty badly, and Hillcrest can make it happen if Walker works at it. Like I said awhile ago, don’t count out a mid year reclass. I’m not sure how interested KU would be in that situation unless they miss on Wilson and have a couple scholarships laying around.

2019 Transfer List • Jun 04, 2019 08:32 PM

Kid just wants to play somewhere he can earn a scholarship. Don’t blame him.

Ha! My bad. @BShark got it

New 2019 Recruiting • Jun 04, 2019 12:22 AM

Walker is reclassifying, it’s a matter of when he can get the work done. He could very well be a mid-year guy.

Edit: mid, not kid

From txhawk on the phog

"According to Williamson's HS coach, who I worked with directly for 6 years, Sam (and more so his mother) did not get a good vibe on their official visit. The mom felt like KU wasn't making him a high enough priority at the time. Louisville quickly told Sam what he wanted to hear, and the deal was done. "

Lines up with stuff I was seeing at the time (albeit from more suspicious posters) and wooooof.

I heard Self pushed hard for a commitment and drove Sam's mom bananas. Not good in hindsight. Doesn't really solve our problem at the 2 (though there's a reasonable argument that sophomore Ochai > freshman Williamson) but definitely would make Wilson a non-factor. Oh well.

The issue is not recruiting outside of the top 20. The issue is identifying guys that are presumed OADs. That may not be a fixed number each year. Different classes mean different things. There might be 8 presumed OADS one year, and 15 the next. And the #20 kid might be a presumed OAD and the #12 kid not.

I chuckle at the idea that KU, with Bill Self as the coach, focusing on non-presumed OADs, could be akin to Iowa St. Now, lose coach Self? That's a different deal.

So, tell me, what presumed OAD has made a transformational difference in our outcome at KU since Self has been here -- a difference that really meant something?

I suggest only one -- Josh Jackson. But even with that, we only made the EE.

It's just beyond me why those results cause such recruiting effort over multiple years.

It increasingly is about recruiting outside the top 20, since freshmen are leaving for professional opportunities at higher rates. I'm of the mind that a mix of OAD and multi-year players is the best formula for KU. The risk being if you stick to recruiting only multi-year guys and they go supernova like Ben you're stuck. The transition from 2014 to 2015 would've been brutal had we not landed Wayne (a presumed OAD) and Wiggins. We would've started Tharpe, Conner, Andrew White, Perry Ellis, and Tarik Black. Woof.

Like you said, it's about risk and planning that risk across years. With a presumed one and done, you bake in the assumption they leave after a year. If not, a bonus! But if a multi-year guy does blow up and leaves before you think and you only recruit guys who are multi-year and may not be ready, you're in a heap of trouble unless you find the right fit as a transfer. It's not necessarily just freshmen, but UVA and Nova are good examples. UVA will take a big step back next year after losing a lot of guys they expected to have for 4 years. Same with Nova and Donte.

The bust rate on guys ranked 20 and beyond is also a lot higher. Quite a few never live up to their ranking or become more than bit players on good teams, like Conner. OAD types inside the top 20 bust at a lot lower rate. So it's not a risk-free proposition to recruit non-OAD type guys. It's the type of risk you're willing to take. Sign me up for high floor OAD's with competition from multi-year guys. If they don't develop, they leave.

Roy will...something stronger than kill it I bet.

He'll try. UNC has never had visits as good as KU. UNC has to have a good answer for Wilson's role, which is far from a sure thing since Roy signed like 5 perimeter players already in 2019 and Roy sold them all on immediate PT, with the exception of Francis.

New 2019 Recruiting • Jun 03, 2019 03:12 PM

@KirkIsMyHinrich yessir. Juwan Howard will try for an in-home and Wilson may take it but I don't think they're a serious player as of now.

We've Really Arrived Now • Jun 03, 2019 01:45 PM

Tbh I'm just thrilled we're landing decent HS players. I think the line commits will come later as the staff gets a better feel for how guys are developing.

Ok so here’s what I’ve gathered so far. My connection at his former HS in Winston Salem said he’s a pretty unassuming kid. He hasn’t been in the US for long and as a black French guy moving into the American South, he had a bit of a rough go of it. Just culture shock. This is a charter school with a pretty stringent disciplinary structure, so just wasn’t a good fit. I didn’t hear of any handler/guardian issues.

He’s really ambitious though, unlike a lot of French guys. From a basketball standpoint, he’s a pretty quick learner and takes to the perimeter aspects of the game more quickly than the post. Which is common. He’s not a jump out of the gym athlete. More of a smooth player. They think he may end up around 7’0. Needs to get stronger, but shouldn’t be a problem once he gets into a legit S&C program. I was told his frame is “a sight to behold.” And this is my opinion, but once he gets some legit coaching and conditioning, this could he a steal. Worst case, he doesn’t develop and leaves.

I'm fine with taking a project big. Plenty of guys for this year but lots of looming uncertainty. If he doesn't come along you move on after a year but he could easily be part of the post rotation in the 20-21 season.

Exactly. He’ll be the 12th or 13th guy if he even makes it to KU and KU offers.

New 2019 Recruiting • May 31, 2019 09:50 PM

Dated 9/2018, but good info, “A promising junior campaign ended early for Parisian center Josaphat Bilau, as the former Riverdale Baptist student injured himself last season. Losing a skilled, 6’10”, 245 pound performer was devastating to the Crusaders, while being shelved seemingly stunted his on court development.

Yes, and no.

True, playing would have put him on the radar of more schools, given Riverdale being a known DMV recruiting spot. Nevertheless, via Summer 2017 and running with Team Thrill in ’18, scholarship offers from Kansas state, Georgetown, Illinois, Penn State and Texas Tech have been received. NC State, WVU, Louisville, Maryland Wake Forest and Gonzaga have all shown interest.

That love is predicated on Bilau’s ability to play away and near the cup, including shooting, passing and attacking via face up, while also scoring though jump hooks/shots in the painted area. This Class of 2019 guy can rebound, is solid running the floor and defending the rim from a weakside position.

Recruiters see Catch 22 problem with Bilau; given his immense skill set and stated desire to use it, Josephat can find himself floating away from the interior. Add a need to get stronger as necessary improvement, another issue that can be addressed in college.

Bilau has left Riverdale, planning to attend prep school in North Carolina. He has the chops to be a national level recruit.”

Very high ceiling kind of kid. Hasn't been playing basketball very long. French national. He's about 6'10 235 now with a 7'2 wingspan. Suuuuper skilled but raw for his size. Reminds me some of Kerry Blackshear.

2020 is going to be a big class. Need at least 1 guard, probably two, two bigs, and possibly at least 1 wing if Ochai goes pro. I feel good about Daishen Nix at PG. Bryce Thompson is firmly in the mix at the 2 if we need another guard. UNC will be tough to beat there. Remember Zach Harvey? Also possible if all the legal stuff is over and done with. Isaiah Todd would be a terrific fit alongside McCormack. Ditto Xavier Foster, though seems he might stay local. Isaiah Cottrell is a nice player too. Josh Hall is a legit combo forward we're in on. Scottie Barnes will visit either late summer or early fall. I don't think Kyree Walker is a lock to be one and done, either. So we have a lot of irons in the fire.

@jayballer73 @Texas-Hawk-10 I know you guys were mentioning it on instinct but it seems there is smoke picking up for Jalen Wilson indeed potentially ending up back at Michigan. Certainly something to keep an eye on. Michigan people are confident.

I’ll be more nervous if Howard actually schedules a visit with him. As of now it’s really just KU and UNC involved really seriously.

@wissox thankfully we don’t need freshmen to lead the team! We do need at least one more perimeter body. Attrition has been such that we only have 10 guys right now, so we’re one injury away from disaster at about every spot.
