Go back and look how many HS players got drafted in 04 and 05 and you’ll see why it was harder to land top 10 talent. We were still recruiting at the top of the talent pool available those years too.

I beg to differ. At this point, every win is a loss... Gimme that draft pick!
They are almost guaranteed to pick top 3. The Royals already have 46 losses. Only Baltimore (47) has more. The Marlins have the most losses in the NL and they only have 42. Detroit only has 40. Toronto and Seattle have 43.
It's hard to see the Royals trending up enough to make up much ground on anyone. Even making up three or four games will be a task because they already have so many losses "in the bank".
The pick is coming. No need to lose 110+.
I would really prefer we get the top pick. However many losses it takes to get there.

Howard helped secure Q as well. Didn't work out but that was a big time signing.
And he was on Hampton right?

Looks like Self and Howard dominated this recruitment. They locked in and got em
And people tried to criticize Howard AGAIN this offseason.
That dude is on the path to becoming a head coach, no doubt in my mind. I would guess he ends up a serious contender for the Depaul job the next time it opens up.
Meh, we take whatever is coming to us. It's our own fault for switching to Adidas 15 years ago. Sure, the off-brand makes sense financially. But don't tell me Oreos taste the same as Twist & Shouts.
There are only three ways I see the game being even a little close.
- Jones controls the game on both ends, causing havoc on D while getting the other young guys good looks.
- Hurt or Moore just shoot the ball lights out. Like a 30 burger.
- They go zone and we can't find a way to score.
Here's how I see the game going: Duke's young guys come out strong. Bill gets pissed and calls a timeout down 11-3 after Jones gets a steal and a breakaway. We start feeding Doke and DeSousa. Carey picks up a couple of quick fouls and is out 6 minutes into the game. They start doubling down low, but then Moss and Wilson hit a couple of 3s. We storm back, taking a commanding lead 38-30 with 4 minutes left.
At this point, K, realizing he is about to get ran out of this gym, fakes a heart attack and gives up on the season like he did a few years ago when they were terrible. KU goes on to win by 20.

The versatility that team could have is amazing too.
Now get his ass on campus. He already missed a scrimmage.
Depth. Size. Shooters.
It's like the exact opposite of last season.
From his pinned highlight tape on Twitter, the dunk off the wrong foot after the in and out dribble on the fast break is just absolutely freak of nature type of stuff.

Don't get me wrong, he has a chance to be good, but like Fran says, he's two years away from being two years away. Maybe not quite that long, but you get the gist.
That's fine. Get him here and slap a redshirt on him. You can't teach dunking the ball like that.
Wur looks like a freak athlete. My goodness.

If the guy could even shoot as well as the viral 8 year old going around right now, he’d be a first round draft pick. He has all the athleticism you want from a guard. He has the versatility you can only dream of. He plays his ass off. He is the best defender I can remember under Self since Robinson. He is selfless. He’s a warrior. And even 5 years ago he would have been special

@Kcmatt7 Everyone's got an opinion and yours and mine are pretty far apart on this one.
I believe that Scott Drew is a huge reason Kansas had 14 consecutive conference championships. He had so much talent during that time and did so little with it. Honestly, in every game that Baylor had any kind of a lead on us, I didn't even have to change my superstition routine - I knew that Drew would find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
He may be a wonderful guy, pillar in his community or whatever, but I'm glad he's Baylor's coach and not ours.
The question isn't "who do I want to coach at KU?"
The question is, "who is the most disrespected coach?"
And I think you're proving my point. Drew took a historically bad program with zero signs of life and turned it into a very solid program that is competitive every single season. He has twice as many NCAA tournament appearances as the rest of the coaches in program history combined. He has a quarter of their wins. And he does all of this in a state where they are completely overshadowed by UT, Tech and A&M. All while also competing against TCU, Houston and SMU for similarly ranked players.
Drew is the furthest thing from the reason KU had their conference title streak last. He has elevated a program that was a basement dweller for literally a century, into a respectable program and that is at least a major part of why the conference has been so strong top to bottom over the past 7 or 8 years. If you're looking for programs that should be ashamed, look at A&M, UT, OU and OSU. Those are the programs underachieving.
Drew should be proud as hell about what he has accomplished at Baylor.
Kerry Blackshear and Arkansas rumors heating up... per Slater
Scott Drew is my #1 and it isn't even close. What he's been able to do at Baylor surprises me more and more every year. He isn't the best Xs and Os guy, but somehow he gets a bunch of athletes and makes it work. I don't think he gets near the respect he deserves.

@FarmerJayhawk I think he'd be nice to have but yeah I think the main concern right now is a capable secondary ball handler that can shoot. Does anyone even possibly fill that role but Kyree Walker?

He basically said he's going to Oregon to play with his best friend Pritchard.
I did no more research than reading a tweet lol

I still think we are weak on the wing from a scoring perspective.
Enaruna still has to prove to me he can play on the wing. Until then he is a project and a stretch 4. Braun will not see time as a freshman if I were guessing.
That leaves us with a Dotson, Garrett, Ochai and McBride rotation.
We need another guard/wing.
Just watching his film, I"m not sure he's a 3* guy. He's definitely a Small-D1 or Good-D2 guy. But he doesn't have that fluidity you like to see for most P5 skill players. But this is the definition of a no lose situation for KU.
3-Star Walk-On is a good sign.
This is the type of thing good programs have happen to them. He may not turn into anything. Or he might be the next great story.
That squad is loaded.
If Texas turns it around because of Yaklich, I don't know how you don't fire Shaka immediately and just promote Yaklich.
BShark said:
@Kcmatt7 I think Wilson is much more ready to contribute than Enaruna from day one but I could be wrong.
I think he could fill a BG type of a role from day one, but that's about it. I really don't think he's a great athlete from what I've seen. Definitely a below the rim guy.
Let's play a game. Pick out whether they are describing Enaruna or Wilson.
A big perimeter prospect that possesses shooting ability and skill. He has very good size for the position and he's a good athlete. He has a solid build and one that would fill out further in a college weight room. He already plays well through contact. Shooting is among his biggest strengths. He has good shot mechanics, shot preparation and good range. He's also a good passer. Areas for improvement include creating space for pull-ups and ball handling. (Player) has the chance to be a first-round draft pick with development.
Has very good size but just has average length for a wing. A high-major perimeter prospect. Is an impressive athlete that gets off the ground with ease and quickness. Has good shot mechanics and a smooth, easy stroke. He’s also a good passer. The next step in his development is improving off the dribble, as he’s more of a straight-line driver at this stage. Also needs to get stronger.
Basically the same exact kind of prospect. And I'm curious as to how the staff is pitching Wilson right now.
I mean I would love to have both because I can only imagine how amazing a full on switching defense in 2020-2021 could be if you had Wilson, Enaruna, Ochai, Garrett and Braun on the floor at the same. Not to mention how well spaced the floor would be considering 4/5 of those guys could shoot. It'd be a thing of beauty.
I just am not going to get my hopes up that Wilson can 1. Contribute major minutes from day even if he comes here (if we don't expect minutes from Enaruna). And 2. Won't see Enaruna as a major threat for PT. Enaruna looks like the better athlete (and it isn't even close) on tape to me.
I think Bill has his roster for better or for worse. I think we whiff on Wilson, personally. The only meaningful player I could see us adding at this point is Walker. Who would fit right in. But either way, I think this group is a 30-win Top 10 team. As long as Bill can iron out the 3 point defense, this group has enough to make a runa at a FF. Nobody in the country has someone who can guard Doke. Dotson is a Top 5 PG. I think that's enough to make a FF run.
Grimes coming back makes all the sense in the world for both parties at this moment.
Hampton's twitter is cracking me up. "PEOPLE ARE MAD I TOOK BAGS."
No dude. Nobody is mad you went and got paid. They're mad you tried to pretend you were staying (even though Slater was basically all over this) to get hype.
Seriously worth the sub. But just to sum it up for you guys, Quotes from Dotson's dad are saying that he has heard a few teams interested in him at the top of the 2nd but nothing about being in the 1st round.

Been in the works for 3 months!! Surely Self knew this.
I think he probably had faith that Adidas would take care of it.
HighEliteMajor said:
Say Dotson doesn't come back. So what?
My guess is that if he doesn't come back the staff will be on the phone figuring out who wants to come start at PG for us and help them get enrolled in summer classes so they can reclass by August. At least 20 guys in the top 30 would be eligible for the 2020 draft if they could finish the classes they need in time.
Duke did it twice (with Bagley and Thornton) in the past 4 years.
Garrett, Braun, McBride, Enaruna and Big Dave will all be here next season. That is a pretty solid core of players.
And I thought we were about to see some good stuff from Spring Bill.
BShark said:
@Kcmatt7 I think Self would even be interested at this point but Grimes' circle? I very much doubt it.
At this point you have to think their agent is pleading with them to return.
This recruitment has never felt right. His final schools all seemed odd based on his want to play PG.
I bet he announces Memphis and goes overseas.
And then most of you need to probably be okay with the idea Grimes could legitimately be back.

I hope Mitch redshirts. Was planning on it last season until everything went bass ackwards. I assume he would be ok staying a 5th year and getting his masters.

Ryan over at the Phog dropped these nuggets regarding Grimes.
Small fwiw, but if Grimes goes back to college it won't be at Kansas. Have heard it's possible he opts out and transfers, and now there are a few in the national NBA/Draft media that have mentioned it as well.
I think there's virtually no chance at him back at KU unless Dotson isn't coming back AND Hampton isn't joining the roster. Even then, I'm not entirely sure those bridges aren't burned.I feel bad for Grimes. I really do. It seems as though his inner circle is filled with delusional people who have and will continue to fail him. He should have never even declared.
This is one of my favorite movies, and this quote all too often comes to mind...
But what if this is all on Grimes himself?
I suppose it's possible. But either way, whoever raised him let him get too big headed before he ever got to KU then. There was clearly no backup plan in case he struggled.

Yeah the only way Grimes is back is if Dotson stays in the draft and we whiff on Hampton.
Quoted today as saying that Howard getting hired at Michigan will probably end up bringing the Fab 5 back together.

I do think they need to trade Cuthbert. I don't know what more he can do to play at the big league level. If we like Gutierrez and Arteaga better, than ship him off now. He'd at least fetch a raw talent with a high upside somewhere in single-A.
Either trade Bubba or call him up.
Can we see what Nick Dini can do at the MLB level? He's got the 2nd best OPS in Omaha this season and Maldonado has been awful.
I expect them to recruit well early.
I don't think he's there for any longer than 5 years though. If he does well he'll get an NBA job.
You might be able to trade Kennedy if you eat most of his salary for the next two seasons. Bailey looks possible, but it would be for peanuts probably.
Gordo isn't going anywhere. They think they're close to competing so Whit stays here on his team friendly deal even though he could probably fetch 2 very good prospects.
Don't think there will be a market for anyone else.
Woodrow said:
Maybe it is just the way the 2019 recruiting cycle has gone, but I would not be surprised if he ends up back at Michigan.
Definitely don't like that they made a good splashy hire.
I wonder if the staff said he shouldn’t because they can’t give RJ food and rides and stuff like that
