Fun with the box score!
Wow, if you only look at the stats, there’s a good chance you would have thought the Texans won.
Total yards
Texans 336. Chiefs 212
Total plays
Texans 65. Chiefs 50
*Rushing*
Texans 149. Chiefs 50
Passing
Texans 187. Chiefs 162
Hopkins / JuJu / Hollywood
ZERO receptions
Difference maker stats?
Sacks
Texans 3, Chiefs 8
Kick return yards
Texans 67, Chiefs 131
Always nice to beat the sheep lovers!
Fun with the boxscore:
16-21 FTs
We attempted 21 FTs!!!! That is fantastic for us.
Of those with double digit minutes played
AJ Storr was -11 in +/-
Hunter and Zeke were 20+ point scorers / and Dajuan with 15, filling that third scorer role mostly necessary to win. Sure wish Rylan or AJ would fill this role, or be a fourth double digit scorer
I’m gonna hit the DVR later for this one. Off to my Saturday walk. Rock Freaking Chalk!

Flory starting, odd choice.
Self just can’t help himself. Shooter to open the floor? Nah.
Ok, inside game it is. I haven’t followed the opposition yet, so hope that’s the right game plan.
I’ve been looking over previous box scores to see what it takes for KU to win.
Seems obvious, but a light review says we need Hunter and Zeke to have solid games, plus one other guy to step up to double figures.
Please get Hunter going!
Sure is crazy that the topic of questioning Bill Self is coming up this season.
Something has pushed some to ponder his coaching.
Is it just KJ and Harris, or are there other concerning factors to you @approxinfinity ?
I think it’s natural to worry about his health after the scare last year. What else?
@approxinfinity yea, sure. but…
He doesn’t need much athletic ability to get his shot off. Great touch. He needs teammates or a coach with the ability to get him open near the hoop. Not 15 feet away from the hoop where his unathletic ability slows things down. Spacing!
It’s happened before. It can happen again. Maybe.
Doesn’t it kinda suck that for the last four or five years every argument comes down to KJ and Juan?
And of course — fun with the box score.
Sums it up:
FTs
KU 4-11
ISU 18-25
Game over.
Hey, it sucks to lose. But losing like that is maddening and frustrating. F-U-G-L-Y.
I lost track of how many times we got a turnover and within a split second turned it right back over.
But, we had a chance to be in this game all night. Stupid turnovers and bad decision making.
I think starting Shak has positives and negatives. The defense is obviously better. But, today at least, we suffer with really only ONE offensive threat on the perimeter. Shouldn’t take much for teams to try to shutdown Zeke. Leaves zero room for Hunter to operate and gain good position.
So, if you’re starting Shak, you gotta start Rylan and not KJ, who is a non threat on O.
Self has his hands full. I wish he would think about offense. You have to score more than the other team to win.

I’m honestly less worried about these type of games. We seem to bring our A game when the situation calls for it. It the games when we are playing less competition like WV or Fizzou we have zero energy.
Yea, weird. The energy part makes no sense to me. It’s very evident at times though. How can guys not be fired up to play? KU needs a Flavor Flav hype man. Yeah Boyeeee!
I'd say we've had plenty of real tests already!
A cake walk would be nice :)

This team is good. Just doesn't look like how some people would want it to. Then again some people are never happy.
??? I thought our offense was ranked way down low?
@drgnslayr said in WKRP in Cincinnatti:
REALITY CHECK: ISU awaits us! This is a team built to give us a real challenge. We better bring defense and we damn sure better bring offense. If we dilly-dally through the first half of this game we will be down 20+! I heavily suggest we finally make Hunter stay in the post and score! You want high ball screens, that’s what KJ’s for!
First half dilly dallying is a concern.
Jeez, it’s nearly impossible to come up with a starting five. So many favs over the years.
Some of my favs:
PG Jacque Vaughn / Sherron Collins
G Kirk Hinrich / Devonte Graham
SF Paul Pierce / Keith Langford / Calvin Thompson
PF Danny Manning / Nick Collison / Alonzo Jamison
C Greg Ostertag / Udoka Azubuike
@BeddieKU23 said in WKRP in Cincinnatti:
I mean the offense is not nearly close to the level it needs to be. #32 ranked on Kenpom, the d is rated 28 places ahead. They have been struggling to score all season long. You need to be proficient and good at both ends in March. Defense will carry you so far as it has lately but this is the regular season.
And how freaking weird is all that!? Totally the opposite of how we thought this team was built. Thought we’d need to score 90 per game to compete!
Wow, that was maybe the ugliest game I can recall.
The D is coming alive! I watched the Shaq post game interview. Very impressed with his confidence and demeanor.
Some of the stats are just astounding.
Seven total FT attempts! Combined.
KU under 10% from deep.
I’m not quite sure what to think of this team. It seems to be transitioning the last three games.
All Shaq?

You can find the box scores there? I gave up. Thought they stopped.
So where does everybody read previews, notes, game stories … or do you? Any other sites?
It's not easy, but i'm going to have some hope for Storr though. We did see something good out of him in the UCF game. He did well to find some baskets. not all hope lost, but something needs to change. we don't know these players, but maybe it's just a mindset.
Anybody worried about that “flat” first half? Seems common now.
Once again we seemed lifeless. Of course I missed the first 5 min of the game. Thx ESPN!
My initial enthusiasm about Diggy is waning a bit.
There’s lots to like about his play — mainly that he isn’t shy and he’s in the game for one reason…shoot it.
We sure need that at times. I wish he could reign in his shot selection a tiny bit.

Could it be possible he leaves the team during the Season ?
I had the same thought! Wondered if Storr would call it a day in Lawrence and move on. Seems crazy of course, but he's now deep in the doghouse. I will say this: Bill gave him a chance to play through FOUR turnovers/mistakes until he yanked him on the fifth eff up. Or something like that. That's more than usual.
Very intriguing to see how this story line plays out.

We have nine conference home games to go. Thinking about winning the conference title is okay but conference tourney seeding with a vaunted bye is more attainable. With so many new teams it remains to be seen if we find some new struggle arenas and I do remember dreading going to Boulder every year for instance. Very interested in how we play tonight.
Zabudda, you’re lost in a sea of threads! :)
Way back in the day i used to have the KC Star delivered to me out here on the Left Coast.
Lasted like a month. They'd send me like a week's worth at a time, and they just collected dust.
but that was before the digital days.
I enjoy the content that KU Sports provides for sure.
Well, all good things come to an end. I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner.
The paywall has arrived at KUSports.com.
Who's gonna pony up the $50 a year? I'm undecided. (if they could only get that Upcoming Games algorithm fixed! ha).
@BeddieKU23 said in Arizona St:
Agree I hope they continue to push the pace. Playing slow doesn't work for this group imo. 3 guard starting lineup might be the answer on offense and may lead to improved defensive efforts as well. Moore was known as a good defender and could really help shore up our perimeter defense. Too early to tell but Moore could really be the chess piece this team needs to leap back forward towards its ceiling.
It’s hard to argue with the success we had against UCF with Shaq starting. I 100% would not have guessed it would lead to more scoring by replacing scorers Storr or Griffen on the floor.
I was very encouraged to see Storr contribute in some way. Most of his shots were not created for him, but by him. Seems like from what others have said, that’s his thing.
How can he keep that up in the flow of regular offense?

@kjayhawks I'm not convinced that sitting the starters Sunday was a great idea. They get out of sync, out of rhythm. Plus they get a bye game. Chiefs lose big in their next game. Take it to the bank. Like Mahomes' paycheck
The Chiefs won the Super Bowl resting Mahomes last season and went to the Super Bowl in 2023 after resting starters the final week.
Nuttin wrong with resting the players IMO. Long ass season. Mahomes hurt, etc. Rest will be a good thing. However, that Broncos score was painful regardless. I would have hoped for more from the team, however many backups were playing. an NFL shutout? Practically unheard of.
Ah, yea. the Chiefs played Sunday! I didn't get to watch, but i saw the score.
I guess the key takeaway was that LT Humphries didn't shine?

I’ll say it so @kuballin10 doesnt have to: Self used his personnel well today. People were used in the roles they were intended to be used and they responded.
I mean, maybe about the roles?
I'll admit i was worried about the offense with Shaq starting today. I thought that left us down to Zeke as the only starter who could score other than Hunter in the post.
I'm gonna guess that Self uses that 5th starter spot as he needs to each game. Could see the lineup change depending on matchups? We'll find out i suppose.
A nice way to start the new year. Expectations are now up!
Well then. Surprise, Surprise!
How's about that. Anybody see that coming? Dunno where that came from, but more of it works for me!
Straight up Kentucky like bashing from way back when. Love it.
I was honestly surprised to see Shaq start. If that's the energy or mojo we need, great. Can't argue with the game result.
Storr has to be steaming with mop up duty. This will be interesting to watch for the rest of the season.
Well done, Jayhawks!

Wasnt there a players only team meeting after which the consensus was that Lucas should start in 2015-2016? Did we put Mickelson on mothballs after something like that? A precedent to put a Hunter on the shelf.
I don’t see Hunter being benched. He’s a walking talking double double! He could improve his effort level for sure, but the coaching staff needs to help him out and spread the floor to give him some room to post. If dumb asses like me can see that, surely Self can. Why he won’t is a mystery.
Would love to see him at least try four out for a spell more often.

AJ and Rylan are not playing good basketball and they are causing our struggles. They are not the only factors but are the biggest factors by far. I find that fact to be obvious. Is there anyone who disagrees?
I really think the three of KJ, AJ and Griffey are the main issues.
KJ has been a total non-threat offensively. The other two have not been very good. Flory and Coit need more run with how things are going.
Anybody recall if we have had these kind of discussions about players BEFORE the KJ/Harris era? I don't recall anything this stern. Maybe the McCormack days?

@rockchalkjayhawk I was in San Francisco several years ago down at the Wharf and learned about a tsunami warning hours later that occurred in the area without any real warning given. How often do the warnings occur and have there been any tsunamis that have caused serious damage on the west coast?
I can say the earthquake warning system out here is loud and clear. Your phone beeps like crazy. But the tsunami warning system maybe needs some work. I don't live on the coast, but i assume there are some blaring sirens if a big serious one is on the way. TV and the internet of course scream loudly about it.
Often times when we get tsunami warnings, it turns out to be not much of anything. A barely noticeable or not even visible wave or higher tide.
Since i've been in California since the late 90s, i recall maybe four tsunamis that have caused damage -- $100 million for the last big one up and down the coast. They tear up harbors and tied up boats.
Now Florida on the other hand ... one time we visited and one of the first things we saw while admiring the ocean view was a giant water spout! run for the hills! Wait, they have no hills in Florida.
Ah. Gotcha. Come on out to the sunny west coast. You only have earthquakes, wildfires and tsunamis to contend with. Ice free.
Oh, and we've oddly added tornadoes to our weather lately. crazy.
@patoh3 said in Central Flaw rid unh-uh:
If the weather forecast is correct, watching this live will be a no-go for me. 0.4-0.75 inches of ice. That very well may be a good thing the way the team has been playing.
OK, i give. why would 0.4-0.75 inches of ice stop you from watching?
Upon further review…there were two bright spots last night. Zeke and Flory.
Bidunga was great. (I’m ignoring that last second freshman mistake)
Love his energy and enthusiasm.
Self described the showing as “as miserable (an) offensive team as I’ve seen play in this building in 22 years. That was horrid.”
Pretty much sums it up. So, coach, why couldn't you do anything to fix it????
I'm losing faith.
-- If this were baseball ... it's time to send Storr and Griffen to outright waivers. Would we miss them? Not tonight for sure. What purpose do they serve? They are stiff as boards and shit their pants every time they get in the game.
-- Honestly, how can Self defend KJ any more? Yes, he had a great game vs Duke. But I was so freaking happy when he took him out for a good long stretch today. I didn't keep track, but i assume we made our comeback with him on the bench.
-- The lone positive tonight: Zeke. Although he had his share of F ups. One in particular may have cost us the game (driving to the rim and dumping it off in mid layup instead of taking the shot).
-- We knew our defense was going to be bad this season. We knew our offense would have to carry us. Surprisingly the D has played well on occasion, but even more surprisingly, the offense has not played well on occasion.
-- How can we have ONE freaking guy trying to make shots??
-- I'm at the point where you say F it and play Passmore as a starter. Let him at least put some effort in on D. He's athletic enough to score a few every game. Can't be worse than Storr, right?
-- Where's Shaq?
-- This team is incongruous.
@approxinfinity said in And so it begins -- Players won't play without promised NIL $:
Feel bad for the ageless one here. Imagine if KUs boosters were flaky and Self was stuck squeezing them and encouraging the kids that the money was coming. What a drag.
Yup. What a crappy position to put any coach in.
And remember, NIL money isn’t “pay for play”. Players aren’t supposed to complain about hustling butt but not getting paid.
And it’s not supposed to be money for just being recruited.
Outside of the court, it’s services rendered. We give you money and you provide a service for us at market rate.
But whatever. It’s just crazy. Player revolts are a bad thing.
I don't even know where to start with all this, but this could spread in so many ugly ways. It's only a matter of time before this is regulated more closely by somebody. It has to be. This clearly isn't NIL money. This is under the table. NIL money should be accounted for in a signed contract.
Simply, there should be no "promises." No contract? Take your business elsewhere.
But anyway, no matter your opinion about paying nor not paying players, the Wild Wild West must be tamed!
Didn't take too long for players to refuse to play and start suing coaches for not being compensated as "promised." College sports are officially super ugly.
6 former Florida State players file lawsuit against coach Leonard Hamilton over NIL compensation
Pick! Nice work D.
