Ballgame!
FT
Take the lead on this possession and this game is ours.
Here we go.
The run is coming. Should wear them down the last 10 minutes. Be patient ...

Shaping up for an Ali Farokhmanesh finish.
I could have done without seeing that name again.
Get Phil Knight and watch the recruits line up to play for us.
Would have been Wally Pipp-ed for sure!
I had forgotten. Thanks for the reminder.
Seriously, the only thing I really recall of Elvis Grbage was the season he got injured and missed something like 9 games. Rich Gannon filled in and won 7 or 8 in a row to get us into the playoffs. Grbage promptly returns from injury and Schottenheimer starts him that first playoff game insisting that he is the starter and you don’t lose your status due to injury.
So instead of going with the hot hand you play a guy whose been out for 9 weeks. Predictably, we lose that game and we’re out of the playoffs. I liked Marty but that was one of the most inexcusably bad decisions I can recall him making in his time with the Chiefs.
I'll tell you what: it's nice to have the world-beater QB on our side for once and a team that is not only built to win championships, but oozes with confidence. So much so that they are never out of it and, as evidenced by their SB run last year, never think they are out of it no matter how dire the circumstances.
I can't tell you how crushing it was for several decades watching us score 40 points and lose or watching a late scoring drive by the Chiefs to take the lead only to know how the movie ends with Elway or Manning or (fill-in-the-blank) on the other side of the ball, or needing a single first-down to ice the game and seeing us go 3-and-out, punt and lose.
The scenario we have with Mahomes and the Chiefs is sooooo refreshing. I hope the next 10-12 years go the way the past 3 years have gone.
Agreed. Watching that game you never felt like Tampa had a chance yet the scoreboard said otherwise.
Don't forget the 90-yard TD that should have been to Mecole Hardman that Mahomes mis-fired on. This game really should have not been close. I think the Chiefs get bored sometimes.
Oh, and recs for everyone on this thread!
I would think the NCAA record 74.9% career FG shooting would put him up there. It's tough to break an all-time record. I know that's not part of the criteria for rafter-ship, but it probably should be. I think he gets up there when all is said and done.
I believe I'm remembering this right, but I think we also lost to KSU, Duke and Oklahoma during the regular season that year, which made wins over those three in the tourney even more sweet. Beating Duke is always a highlight for me. My least favorite team by far and it's not close.
These dropped today. No mention of Kansas in the "Origin" story though.
I would love to see MG carve out an NBA career as a shut down defensive stopper much like Bruce Bowen all those years with San Antonio.
Where can I get a t-shirt?!

Oh how I miss that team. And the ball movement in those clips...just beautiful basketball.

We'll learn from this crap and our program will move forward and someday get back to being an example to others. In the meantime, bring on Tennessee and let's get back to business.
I can get behind this! Thanks for talking me off the ledge. I appreciate the civil discourse.
I appreciate your reply.
Look, I understand the bush-league steal at the end of the game given the circumstance. I also understand the vicious block and the stare down was months of frustration, suspension and current lack of playing time flowing out of Silvio. If it had ended there I could explain it away as competitiveness. This went way beyond that.
You say emotion and sports are intertwined. Agreed. However, one has to be able to harness said emotion and channel it in the correct way, something we did not do. Exuberance in victory and sadness in defeat are very different from physically attacking an opponent. And I don't care who instigated or escalated the situation. As difficult as it is we simply HAVE to have more awareness and control to walk away - especially so due to looming NCAA sanctions.
Lastly, please don't conflate criticism with not being a Jayhawk. I have followed this program since I was a boy and I want to see it thrive. But it's getting harder and harder to ignore the string of black marks leveled against this program in recent years. And it's getting harder and harder to treat them as anomalous or isolated incidents or just part of doing business in the current climate. As much as it pains me to say it, we are trending downward as a program and the brawl will do nothing to alleviate that. The "stool seen round the world" is going to hurt, I promise you. Ironically, getting hit with the stool might have been less painful.
This is the last straw for me. The scandals, the corruption, late night, a stubborn, inflexible coach, players who just aren't all that interested in KU putting on the uniform and on and on. Fatigue and apathy has finally set in for me as I cannot identify with this brand of athletics.
There is no justification or contextual mitigation for any of what occurred last night. This team is in total disarray and lacks any kind of self-control. That starts at the top. Perhaps a major change is finally in order because I simply cannot support or condone such unscrupulous behavior. All this time I really wanted to believe we were the good guys. But we're really no better than anyone else. In fact, yesterday may prove once and for all we are the complete antithesis of "good".
If ANY team in the country should have avoided the shenanigans from last night it was KU. But they simply cannot get out of their own way. We are now all over the sports media and the regular media for all the wrong reasons yet again. It's disgusting.
Something needs to change.
Generally, I don't subscribe much to rankings, especially early in the season. Like others have said, the Top 5-10 teams are often interchangeable and the ranks do tend to be used as promotional tools.
That said, after everything this team, this coach and these players have had to deal with recently from the NCAA on down, getting the #1 ranking in spite of it all, to me, is a giant middle finger to the whole establishment. And I hope we wave that finger high and proud and as close to the smug face of the machinery as humanly possible.
Kudos, boys! Now put the foot down firmly onto the neck and slowly apply the pressure.

No apologies necessary. While I've come to believe in my time of following this site that some posters know each other in "real life," when we're chatting back and forth here, we're all happily anonymous:woman_dancing:
Well, you're a little less anonymous than you were twenty-four hours ago! I've eliminated half the global population in trying to figure out your real identity. :)
Seriously though, thanks for your understanding.

@tis4tim I tried in vain to remember if it was in any vocabulary lessons in high school. I remember "angst" and "dystopia"--I even remember "antidisestabishmentarianism"--but not that one!
Twain mentions it in "Life On The Mississippi", apparently. I thought I read that as a youth, but I either didn't read it, skimmed over the word entirely or maybe thought it was a publisher typo.
Still, not a word one might readily come by, unless you live in Louisiana ... or seriously love Mark Twain.

My apologies @bcjayhawk. I'll try to do better next time!

I love this site for my KU basketball fix, but the lagniappe is being privy to thoughtful and respectful discussions of topics that for some are difficult. Thank you all for the great exchanges in this thread.
All my years on this planet and I have never come across the word "lagniappe" in anything I've ever read. I gave you a thumbs up on your post and if I could give another for vocabulary lessons I would do that too, good sir.

If you find your island maybe I can be your neighbor on a nearby island? We will invest in a big satellite dish together so we can still watch Jayhawk ball!
Better stay clear of Zenger Island or blackout dates may apply. Wait, can I say "blackout" anymore? :$
Godspeed, Max.

Let's just hope it's not a situation where they say "oh yeah, sure. The kid can play. Oh and by the way here's your post season ban...."
Not now, man. Let's enjoy this for a while.

And I thought we might finally get to have a drama free season for the first time in awhile...
I'd settle for injury-free.
Go right now and get the March Madness app MM Live. You can watch any game on any of the four networks right on your phone or computer. I’ve done that in years past while at work due to the wonky game times. I’ve also used it when the fam was watching movies and I wanted to watch basketball. Pretty cool deal and its all free.
Just saw the headline about 30 min ago when I got home. I will reserve judgment until I know more but what in God’s name is going on at KU? The dysfunction currently on display is sickening.
Hats off to Zenger. The gift that keeps on giving.

Worked out pretty well the last time we played them :)
I'm not giving up until it's official!
Homer prediction: KU wins at OU tonight and Saturday versus Baylor. KSU loses at home to OU and Tech gets bombed in Ames.
Book it!

Wow. I haven’t heaved a basketball in over a decade, but I’m willing to wager a sizable sum that I could make 3% of my threes.
I was trying to explain this to my family the other day about Grimes. Yes, he's playing with more verve these days, but those games where he literally had no discernible stats is incredibly hard to do. I told my mom if she just stood out on the court in the same spot for 30 minutes during a game, I guarantee she could amass at least one rebound or grab a loose ball.
And because she would be standing still as the loose ball came right to her, she would probably get run over by a moving player who was diving for the ball, allowing her to go to the free throw line and get some points as well. There. See? A septuagenarian just bested a 5-star, #8-ranked recruit.
You really have to try to contribute nothing in the game of basketball.

And if it were true and Ball became a Jayhawk and led us to the National Championship - how would we feel then?
I'd feel vacated.
Ha ha. I read that article about LaMelo Ball. I don't put any stock into what comes out of the mouths of the Ball clan, especially considering their reality show goings on. And no way that kid ever gets cleared to play.
But, if KU were actually entertaining the notion of lighting that powder keg, potential NCAA sanctions would be the least of my concerns. I'd solidly begin to question the sanity and the mental faculties of those in charge. At that point, I'd commit them all, clean the slate and rebuild from scratch.

Maybe Grimes is too nice, ala Perry Ellis. He needs to get ornery!
Anyone ever seen Jaybate and Gassnola in the same room together?
In all seriousness, I'm not the most frequent or most prosaic (or poetic) or even the most knowledgeable poster on this board by a long shot, but I did send JB a direct message back in November once the season had begun but his commentary had not. I thought I'd check in to make sure he was okay. I never did get a response. I suppose he'd have no reason to reply to me necessarily, but like some others, I always appreciated his takes whether the were prescient (as in the case of the growing shoe scandal) or slightly wide of the mark. I hope he is doing okay wherever he may be.
Same too for @Red_Rooster.

This all just simply has to be over more than the "$2500" amount everyone is throwing around. We don't know what information they have. But obviously there is something more.
I wish I had the links, but some of the stuff I've been reading about this case seem to indicate that the NCAA has smelled smoke around KU for quite a while now and SDS is the proverbial straw.
If I understood the articles properly, the NCAA has had it in for us for some time now and the amount, whether $2500 or something more, is irrelevant. It's the fact they now have something tangible to pin on us. I get the sense lunch money would have been enough of a paper trail to lower the boom and make an example out of us.
I really wanted to believe we did things the right way, but I guess like some say "If you're not cheating, you're not trying". There's just too much money at stake to have a middling program. The pressure to win supersedes all else. The whole thing is disappointing on so many levels.
I do agree with @HighEliteMajor that if sanctions befall us, but not others who are clearly guilty, we should burn the whole thing down and start over.
