@HawkChamp Self gave his explanation.....He believed you should leave your best players in. Also, he believed that Doke could hit half of those FTs...if so, it might have been a different game.
He admitted that it turned out to be a bad decision.
I don't think there was a hidden Agenda.
@HighEliteMajor And this will continue to be a real problem going forward. In close games, other coaches will surely use this tactic. Which, if Doke does not get better (as you say, how can he with that form?) will cause Self to have to take him out at the 5 min. mark or so depending on where we are on team fouls. Then, of course, teams will attack Mitch inside.
@Jayballer54 Why not Mitch? He is a good FT shooter.
@Big-Clyde52 Yes. We had control of this game. As you say...now we will have to scramble. KSU will be playing us at home to move into a tie for first. Will be a tough game for us to win.

Yes. 4 trips down the floor with nothing when OU was also doing nothing. As soon as Lon did it the first time.....you have to take him out.
@Crimsonorblue22 Noticed the same thing. A lot of empty seats for such a big game.
@BShark Was just about to post the same thing. When they were up by 10 I was criticizing Self for not taking the risk and putting Doke back in.....that's why he is the coach and I'm not. I'll take it.

@Kcmatt7 Yes........the purple pussycats have played themselves into a 4 way tie for 2nd. I could see us winning both of the next 2 road games or losing both.......that's the way things are this year. If we lose both (shudder)..........we could see 5 teams with 3 losses.

I think one thing that is at work here is that teams are not expected to win in AFH so they play loose......free and easy. Like they have nothing to loose.
I was jumping out of my skin when about halfway through the 2nd half and we had scored like 10 points and let them back in the game.
@JayHawkFanToo Yes. Poke a Doke worked for them.....especially in the last few minutes when they grabbed him when he got that offensive rebound (or maybe a lost ball by DG...can't remember)...Doke missed both. Garrett struggled as well with FTs.....those 2 missing so many contributed to our 2nd half offensive struggles.
Tech and OU with 3 losses........excellent!
Great to see Tech get 3 losses.....OSU hanging tough with OU.

Yep.....so far so good. Would be great if OSU and ISU could hang on to their leads.
Those of you that said if he was not eligible by the start of 2nd semester he was probably gone..........were right. It is good to get it over with and move on.
I really think to be a FF contender we needed Billy. Without him, we can still be a very good team (we already are part of the time), but I don't think we will become a FF contender....Silvio will have to progress faster than is reasonable....IMO.
@StLJhawk Very well could happen. A few good games at the end of the season can move a guy up the draft board.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Agree that Newman doesn't have to be gone. But, don't you think he and his family told Self to assume he would only be there one year........and Self recruited as if he would only be there one year..........including informing recruits as such? Or something along those lines. I would think Newman would be welcomed back........but no guarantees about PT in a crowded backcourt....with Self committed to letting Dotson and Grimes get PT. But who really knows.......

I think DG, Garrett, and Vick all take turns. DG has to avoid fouling though.

Doke should never have gotten that T.....now he's on the bench. That said......Konate has intimidated us so much......our shots at the rim have been so tentative and weak.
@DoubleDD I think I have seen, the past few years, that teams often come in and play free and easy......possibly because no one expects them to win in AFH.....thus they have nothing to lose. No down side.........they just let it fly.......and some times get hot.

@truehawk93 Yes....those missed layups drove me crazy. We might have been able to demoralize them early if we hadn't missed a couple of those in the first half.
Izzo usually loses several games in the regular season he shouldn't......more than his share. But I think he gears his team for the Dance. Yes.....he has had his share of tourney upsets.......everyone has. But he gets his team to the final four. It feels like his team this year will peak at the right time.
I never count him out.
I thought we were done when Doke got tied up under the basket. It was clear at that point they would get the last shot. Fortunately, KSU screwed up their last opportunity.
Yes. All good games. Tech did what it had to do...win on its home floor. Logjam...
The 16-3 run they went on killed us......our offense went stagnant and they turned an 8 pt. deficit into a 5 point lead. Normally, if we hold a team to 34 at the half.......we've got a decent lead. A few missed layups early kept them in the game. Those 2 give ups.....one by Doke on the hustle play and one by DG late have really hurt us.
@HighEliteMajor I would say Svi when Doke is in......Mitch when Doke is out. I worry....but they also have to guard Doke.
@Jayballer54 I remember Nealy, well.....seemed like he always burned us for a double double. Our fans would yell that he had a butt like a girl.......but he was good.

@BeddieKU23 It was funny listening to the announcers go crazy when Mitch hit that little jumper from the baseline. He has proven to have a nice touch.......I felt good about that shot when he took it.....but they went crazy......same deal on the 3.
We did play tougher. Obviously, the same problems exist....a lack of rebounding and defense. We need to shoot the ball well enough to win enough games until reinforcements arrive (if and win they arrive) in order to win the conference. You could argue that, in theory, this was one of our 4 toughest conference games. A very good win.
Did anyone see the way Mizzou lost to UF? It was so Mizzou.....
