Ha. It's just very hard to see at the moment. Right now, he's the worst player on the team probably. Bill gave him a make a wish start and heavier minutes against WVU and we see how that went. The energy is so much better starting games without him in the line-up. He just can't process a different role other than "middling volume scorer". He needs the ball in his hands and lots of shots to put up stats. That's who he has always been.

All that said he is being paid a lot so maybe both sides figure something out by the end of the season.

The fact that we are catching flak for resting our starters in a meaningless (for us) week 17 game proves two things

  1. We live rent free in other fanbases heads to an unprecedented degree

  2. NFL fans are VERY stupid.

Resting your starters on the last week when you have nothing to play for is standard practice and has NEVER been controversial. I don't even think the nationally hated Patriots were ever criticized for it in the 2010s. I guess we are now the greatest villains in football history BWAHAHA

Every team in the league has more or less done this historically as well. Very selective outrage and/or people have short memories.

Arizona St • Jan 09, 2025 11:49 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 the team would be better off without him imo

Insane half. We learned some things tonight and I will add I'm good if AJ never gets ina game for KU again outside of garbage time.

Objectively hilarious stat

Shaq is a dog. Get some of that in Mayo and we’ll bee be good

Mayo was really timid in the first half. I imagine Self tore into him in the locker room because he has really been pressing things in a bad way this half. #noticing

He did. We started 6-0 and then the game went south fast

On a serious note this team is as bad defensively as I can remember for a Bill Self team. I don't care what KP says about that either.

Arizona St • Jan 09, 2025 02:33 AM

I see we are back to missing the tournament.

DaJuan only averages 30 mpg this year. Last year Bill did play DaJuan 38 mpg, largely because he did not trust Elmarko. I do not think we would have been any better had DaJuan played 8 fewer minutes and Elmarko 8 minutes more last year but I could be wrong.

Yep. He averaged 29 the year with Remy and I think we are trending back to that if Shak keeps playing well.

@approxinfinity I do think it's pretty clear that Flory is better than KJ. KJ has "earned it" by being here 4 years blablabla but Flory just has a better impact on the game at this point.

9 rebound KJ doesn’t hurt the team. 2 rebound KJ does. 6 fouls per 40 Flory can’t play the entire game.

Yeah that was a great match-up. I don't bet but I told my friends to bet the KJ rebounds over.

Not that Bill has to answer to me at all, but I feel like at least 20 minutes from Flory is ideal.

Top 7 rotation guys for me right now (not in any order): Hunt, Flory, Zeke, Juan, KJ, Rylan, Diggy Coit. Storr should be based on talent but mentally he is not there right now. Shak also has the potential to easily pass Diggy. It really is classic Bill to see Shak go from the dog house to starting.

We had a good team in 2023. We won a brutal Big 12, were in the top 5 all year, and were a one seed. Using an early tourney exit to try to say otherwise is an illogical argument. Anyone can get bounced early.

We sucked last year.

We will have to see how we play this year. We have had highs and lows already and it is too early to say. My guess is that we are better than last year but far from being one of Bill's best squads.

RE 2023: Bill literally had to have a heart attack to not make the second weekend that year. Now, do we beat UConn probably not but who knows.

@BShark

An historic one-off type game, that's crazy. I know this UCF team is better than they showed yesterday as I've watched them play a few times and have seen a much higher level of play from them. They just seemed shellshocked by the level of activity from KU which was a 360 from our previous game.

It basically takes a perfect storm for a game like that. It was a good match-up for KU to begin with and then UCF's gameplan on both ends made little sense.

Oh and listen to this

It's audio so you do have to go to the app to listen but Bill talks about how teams don't have to respect KJ's jump shot and that he is limited.

Central Flaw rid unh-uh • Jan 06, 2025 12:19 PM

@BeddieKU23 They were around 60 before this loss iirc. This was obviously an insane game. KU jumped 5 spots which basically never happens this late in the season.

Interesting to note why it was important to keep JD6.

Tulane’s QB who is a true sophomore is rumored to have a $4M/yr deal to go play at Duke for the next two seasons. You DO NOT want to need a portal QB. Tulane QB is a total stud but that is a steep price.

The QB market in the portal is INSANE.

I hope so! Nice to get Alabama transfers for sure. No doubt he was waiting behind a talented WR crew there, and couldn't get on the field too much.
But WR1? I haven't looked at our WR crew. Who else we got?

i hope a WR1 would have more than 4 catches last year.

Yeah they had him change positions too. He was an absolute beast in high school. Very athletic I think they can get something out of him. Easy to get buried at Bama.

"Bill Self said Rylan Griffen will be all right. Didn't sound concerned at all."

My own guess seeing it was perhaps a light concussion.

@BShark Storr as well, just a smaller sample size

Storr didn't pop as much for me, but looked better than he has been attitude wise I would say.

Rylan played 31 minutes today. Made the right plays, played hard. Things I'm noticing.

Zeke Mayo is a :key: player, that's clear. Need him to keep playing well.

First half +/-

Hunt +16
Rylan +14

Flory/Storr -6
Zach/Shak -3

If Hunt gets to play in the 2nd half we will be more than fine.

Second foul on Hunt was a major game changer.

@wissox said in North Carolina Champion to be crowned today.:

KU has made 85 FT's all year. Tonje, formerly of Missouri, presently of Wisconsin has made 83 leading all of NCAA. He has one half left to play today against Butler. One of the more amazing guys I've seen to draw contact.

Yeaaah this team does not play to draw contact at all.

Rylan is missing some really good looks. Those will fall eventually. His energy level is up at least.

@wissox said in North Carolina Champion to be crowned today.:

There's a spot for a 5 win team in a bowl game as several teams dropped out. Wisconsin is next in line for a bid if they want it I read. Maybe KU??

I think it's going to be very difficult for that spot to be filled this late. All these 5-7 schools have moved along with their offseason expecting not to bowl. So players left either to the portal or to prep for the NFL draft already.

Biggest game of Bill's career *

*last 2.5 seasons
