My first game ever at AFH (obvious bucket list item for this 65 yr old)
And I donāt want to miss all the senior stuff⦠I know the game Tips off at three but how early should I get there?
Close game, but the āsuperior athletes ā of Kensucky just lost to the not-so-superior team of Arkansas
Did you all see this recent article by Bilas on the deterioration of refereeing in college b-ball?
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/insider/story/_/id/33281961/jay-bilas-unveils-1-68-men-college-basketball-rankings-version-20 ā
This just sucked.
Being a fan can sometimes just be flat out painful.
Wish they were playing tomorrow and can beat the crap out of somebody, anybody, just took wash the stench out of my being
The question is⦠How can Bill self and the team use thisā¦
Holy crap
At least this is not a tournament game
There is a tomorrow
Wow. Donāt even know where to start on this.
We can only hope this is a huge motivator
My wife keeps mentioning how cute he is ⦠like 20 times in the past month
Missing that many shots in a row⦠and weāre tied. Thatās amazing
geez , I thought I was TRUELY THE ASS of the site lol.
Well, if it helps Iāll think of you as Chief Ass Bucketeer!
As I remember, (Iām old so memory is spotty) HEM always would throw up stats and attempts to analyze the team with numbers and percentages, and these numbers would bolster his arguments for and against certain KU players. There were defintely players he flat out dis-liked. Which made me think, well if coach Self likes these players and is giving them court time, then numbers canāt be telling the whole story of what certain players are doing on the court.
So I started re-watching games and would just keep my eyes on one or two players, and thatās when I really started to see things like positioning, defensive effort, ability the switch effectively, moving away from the ball in offense, communicating with teammates, setting screens, and boxing out. There really arenāt adequate stats for that.
So in a way, he helped me understand the game better. And understand that stats can be limiting.
Well that was entertaining! Harris and Martin ⦠wow. Love our starting guards. I love to see close-ups of Remy, heās always got some very expressive looks, those big eyes, always nodding, talking and pointing. That three near end of game was FEARLESS- that shotmaking will come in handy in league play tight games. Harrisās D tonite was huge in spots. Wish he would have hit that flying Dunk. That would been on a KU highlight reel for decades. Biggus Davus⦠OUCH. He looks pretty much the same now as he did freshman year to me- bull in a china shop. Mitch outplayed him tonite. Love to see more Zach , he gonna be good!
Jalen coming along⦠letās hope he just keeps getting more confident and aggressive. CB and Ochai continue to be double studs, which we will need going forward.
This seasons getting heated up!
Speaking of Ochai and Braun being NBA worthy, Has any former KU player ever talked or written extensively on what it is/was like to play in the NBA vs their college experience?
It seems that a lot of them speak of their college years in a glowing almost reverential way. The excitement, the KU loyal fans, the history, the aura of Allen field house, learning under great teachers and coaches, being part of Jayhawk nation for life, etc. Yes some make a good deal of money in the National Boring Association, schlepping thru 82 regular season games, plane ride after plane ride, getting traded, and moving to a whole new system and environment, a few get lucky to play in the finals⦠Has any former player ever said something to the effect of ā college was not that great, but the pros are amazingā¦ā There was a quote I saw recently by NBA hall of famer Paul Pierce about the magic of being part of KU Nation. Never ceases to amaze him wherever he goes he hears people say Rock Chalk when they recognize him, and how proud and grateful he is when it happens. He says Rock Chalk right back.
Interesting that there were reportedly 40-odd KU hoops alum at the misery game. Thatās a lot! I know that many of them did not make the nba, but still quite impressiveā¦.
@wissox
Nice take !
So.. you want KU to resemble the NBA. Teams like the nuggets of past.. 156 to 148 kind of game.
No defense ! Get the rebound and race down the court and launch it! 5 second internal shot clock. You can really rack up the score in B-ball when there is token effort on D.
Personally I would happily watch a defensive battle. In hoops, football, and baseball, even hockey. loved the Rodman- lambeer pistons. I love it when scoring is HARD. Maybe not World Cup soccer hard (some World Cup games Iāve seen, and Iāve seen a lot, had like a ridiculous 2-3 legit shots on goal TOTAL after 3 plus hours which of course led to 0-0, then lame penalty kicks ..give me a break!).
Most people when polled want more scoring. 56 to 45 style football games are always touted as classics and wildly exciting. But sports has both defense and offense- both should be played at a high level.
I honestly wonder if there will be a game soon when Self will let Remy pull an Iverson and let it loose. heās got a sweet pull up shot.
Place is FULL of St Johnās fans ā¦
Wearing my Garrett jersey - sitting in midst of a sea of red
Will do
Hotel, tickets, food ⦠KU game
Priceless
At the game
Lotsa St. John fans - wudda thought more blue in stands
Remember - stopping a guy from scoring IS THE SAME AS SCORING. Iāll repeat that. STOPPING A BUCKET EQUALS SCORING ONE. how many games did Garrett hold the best opposing scorer to a paltry few baskets?? thats the same as scoring those points.
And yes Marcus would have been on the floor this year for very good reason despite who we have now.
Next few games really watch what Mitch does away from the ball. ESPN replays all their game on demand so one can rewatch multiple times and concentrate on any given single player.
There was a quick cam shot of Wayne seldon and Quentin grimes sitting next to each otherā¦
Also, I hope Self gives Remy a game down the line where he lets Remy be Remy⦠letās hope Coach doesnāt grind him down to the point of losing confidence⦠just throw him a bone once in a while and let him loose.
We sure have a load of good young guys⦠pettiford is Damn QUICK - yikes.. like a video game watching him dart around.
Ochai and/or Jalen will be the alpha studs this year Iām guessing.
biggus Davus is, well, himself, but I SWEAR he actually pump faked once with the Michigan State big in his face, and damn if it didnāt work because he got the bunny bucket. Thatās a good sign!
Mitch can block shots⦠with a small lineup, having a guy who can challenge shots down low is key. He can box out, set picks and pass, and Yes he will do whatever the coaches ask him to do because his blood runs Jayhawk blue. As we all know, Just not going to be a scorer consistently. What weāve seen with him offensively in the past will be the same this year. I too canāt help but love the guy for who he is⦠a KU lifer. Got no complaints.
Biggus Davus does look a bit bigger and meaner, but still struggles with getting himself positioned to block shots when challenged, or moving his feet to stay in front of guys defensively. Apparently the coaches have decided that teaching him to pump fake is not worth it, (watch the villanova bigs- they have been coached to learn pump faking to draw fouls) so he will continue to shoot in his quick predictable way which opposing teams can often defend, thus making BD take a lot of fadeaway shots. Good news is that he is a very good free throw shooter when he does get fouled.
Yes gonna be interesting to watch Remy and HCBS. We have him for a year, and he is gonna hopefully light it up in enough games to compensate for his other āshortcomingsā as particularly perceived by Self. Coach instinctually does not like nba style guys who shoot early in the shot clock or shoot whenever and wherever they feel like it. If Remy can work enough on his D and effort away from the ball, and make the right pass to open guys then Self will hopefully let him be who he is.
Thank god for the basketball season!⦠missed it ⦠win or lose it should be a wild ride this year
Remy is going to shoot shoot shoot allll season long. Let us pray he stays hot. How will HCBS handle this kind of gunner?
Three long weeks until the first exhibition game⦠! Should be a fun year no matter how they land at the end
Looks like Ochai doing ok at the combine, but not enough to improve his draft projected position.
Iām betting big that heāll be back. At best right now he would be a G leaguer. Better for him to play on national TV at KU and work hard to improve his game.
Meanwhile, I canāt wait to get me a Gradey Dick Jersey next year :) I mean how often can you get a legit jersey with ādickā on the backā¦
Hope his number is like 13 and not 3 āŗļø
@Texas-Hawk-10
Damn. Straight.
How many kids now will want to play for Self now that Roy and K (after this year) are gone. Even if itās for one year. We will be a transfer destination for a lot of good players who want to play under an active HOF guy and under the cathedral roof of Allen field house.
@BShark
Upside for me is my daughter is a freshman at Maryland and is seriously into Maryland basketball, (KU was her second choice :( ... so I would expect Manning to make that program much better, and help them with coaching the bigs and recruiting because of his skill set and pedigree. Should be fun to follow the terps in next few years...
Marcus is the epitomy of what I love about KU hoops. We got four years out of him, he played hard, and he is most definitely a Jayhawk for life. He didnāt have parents who were pissed about his role and urging him to transfer (get ready for transfer insanity going forward due to new rule). Wouldnāt be shocked if at some point when his pro days are over he ends up on the KU staff.
From what I understand, Ochaiās parents are very big on education. It does not seem like a family where in there is pressure for the son to earn money so the family can get out of debt or move out of near poverty.
I honestly cannot see him jumping now
I missed something -Did he recently tweet that he was gonna test the draft?
His team, Hiroshima dragonflies, dropped him. Apparently marijuana and itās derivatives are highly illegal in Japan.
Yes - this must have something to do with the impending sanctions?
So he goes for being an assistant coach under a hall of famer at one of the best programs in history to being an assistant coach at Texas?
Huh ...
I do remember Marcus shut down Butler senior night ...
Baylor kicked G in the nards from opening tip
The Only team the bears lost to this year ... I forgot...
When will Jalen officially announce his return ? Weird that is not out there already
So - with HCBS getting a lifetime contract, and with Roy leaving NC, the question is ...
What is arguably the best coaching position in D1? The place where the guy who invented basketball coached? Hard to top Kansas
Biggus Davus needs to learn to shot fake and draw fouls. He can score easily from the free throw line, and get the other team's bigs in foul trouble. Win win.
Honestly Making my head spin trying to figure out whats going on with our program... and I donāt have the time or concentration to wade into the Kansas basketball recruiting posts on this site which are hundreds of posts long..can any varsity bucketeers here give me an idea of
What is likely going to be our lineup next year ?
Quentin grimes ... now thereās a guy we should have got!
and now begins the painfully interminable wait til Nov 2021.... tick tick tiiiiiiick
wish we were playing some summer tour tourney thing...
yep- I actually bough his jersey last year - a first for me in over 27 years of following the team - some guys you just like more than others for some reason, and I liked him imediately. I aways was drawn to the role-player do it all defensive guys, who are 100 percent Jayhawk from the get-go. All signs point to him leaving to make some money somewhere. I don't see him sticking to an NBA team, maybe G-league, or perhaps better overseas, then ,most likely getting into the coaching ranks. HCBS will help him get a coaching job at some point. He was also one of Self's fav all time guys I feel.
Well...
Duke and Kentucky didnāt even make the tourney. North Carolina got ousted quickly. As did Michigan state.
Weird year... last season I do remember we had a pretty good team. May have won it all.
Wow
Rutgers choked ... they had Grimes and Houston ... had em
Man I WISH Garrett would come back ... one of my all time fav KU players ever. Maybe my most favorite. I donāt know his family particulars, but during his senior night speech, he alluded to a complicated family situation. Iām guessing the pressure to go out and make some money soon is pretty high. But I kinda wish Self would ask him to come back... just one more year.
Wow- a lot of positivity in this thread! Love it! From people who are doubtlessly more knowledgeable about D1 hoops than me ...( a few years ago I would have bet real serious money on Quentin Grimes having a suck year after he left us for Houston, which shows I clearly donāt have a clue)
And yes not that worried about Jalen not being there for the first weekend although he has been rebounding well lately to balance out his spotty D and really forced offense - (Dedrick Lawson anyone? )But Jalen may well be the key for weekend number 2.
ESPN reported the āsourcesā say the KU, Virginia and Duke look to be ok ... dook may not be invited though. š
Clearly we need Biggus Davus badly at this point. He is getting better and better, he apparently is coachable and will be back next year. Donāt know what his ceiling is, but I think he has room to grow some more. (PLEASE make him work with a pump fake tutor this summer!!) if he can learn to expend less wasted energy and figure out how to draw fouls, his 80 percent free throws is as good a way to score as any for him.
Wow - stopped watching at the half.... now just watched the second half. UTEP flat out had us, out played us until KU went Full D effort. This fellas is nothing but a good thing. Itās how you respond and how you finish. We already know this team aināt about offense. Itās now about circling the wagons and self belief. Speaking of self, How much of the game credit goes to coach Self? He has got this not-so-talented team into a nice fighting weight over the last few months.
Well pressures kind of off for the tourney. Will be fun to see how far they can scratch and claw their way thru the brackets
